The Government Shutdown Has Created a Science Ghost Town at NIH

The Government Shutdown Has Created a Science Ghost Town at NIH

With days of the shutdown dragging on, projects and services across almost all government agencies are, you know, stalled. And the situation at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD is unstable, according to a report in Nature. Hundreds of experiments with animals and cell lines are in jeopardy because researchers can’t go to work.

Nexus 5 prototype shown from all angles in leaked video

With pretty much every spec of the Nexus 5 already leaked, it was only a matter of time before it popped up prematurely in a video. The seven-minute clip shows the device from all angles and running various apps like Google Earth, albeit without any sound. The unit matches a previous accidental …

This morning a lovely piece of video has surfaced showing the LG-made Nexus 5 from all angles, complete with an early version of KitKat called Key Lime Pie. This device appears to be working with KitKat, but as you’ll find in the menu pull-down the user attains right off the bat, he’ll be heading down […]

Han Solo Carbonite Necklace is Truly Heroic

Jewelry designer Paul Bierker of Paul Michael Jewelry is a busy man. When he’s not designing Boba FettZelda Tri-Force or R2-D2 rings, he’s making pendants that look like Han Solo frozen in carbonite.

han solo carbonite pendant 620x612magnify

This pendant is handmade from sterling silver, and features our favorite scruffy-looking nerf-herder, frozen peacefully in semi-eternal sleep. At least until Boushh shows up. The pendant even has detailed structures on the sides and back to complete the look.

The pendant sells for $110 to $145(USD) over on Etsy, depending on the length of chain you want it on. One minor detail Paul forgot to post is exactly how large it is, but I’m assuming that it’s not too big judging by the size of the loop it’s hanging from.

So if you’re looking for the perfect gift for your very own Princess Leia, grab one of these today.

Watch the SpaceX Grasshopper Reach A New Record-Setting Height

In the past few months SpaceX’s Grasshopper has done test runs that included jaunts to 250 and 325 meters above ground. The rocket has been regularly sticking its landings and has even done some side-to-side maneuvering. And now the Grasshopper has taken its biggest hop yet to 744 meters aka 2,441 feet aka almost half a mile. Pretty slick.

LoungeBuddy App Unlocks the Mystery of Airport Lounges

You don’t have to be a frequent traveler to gain access to some of the poshest airport lounges in the world. Many travelers tend to shy away from these lounges when they come across them because they assume that only frequent fliers can get in.

That might be true for some lounges, but it’s definitely not the case for all. That’s what the LoungeBuddy app is here for: to give you insider information on how you can gain entry to that lounge and wait for your flight in comfort.

After you download the app, you’re asked to fill out a profile that includes your itinerary, frequent flier membership programs, and types of credit cards you have. LoungeBuddy will go through its database and then point you towards the nearest lounge, along with a list of its amenities. It’ll also let you know about any fees you might have to pay to use the lounge – but also points you to numerous free lounges, based on your credentials.

LoungeBuddy is compatible with 60 of the world’s busiest airports, so it more or less has you covered. It’s available for free from the iTunes App Store and is coming soon to Android.

The retaliation begins: Google profiles get Schmidt-faced

Oh, this will work.

(Credit: Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

There’s nothing like a good protest, is there?

People get together. They screech and they scream. Then they go back home and everything stays the same.

The latest public movement appears to be in protest of Google’s decision to make its services (even) more like Facebook.

In a stunningly predictable decision, Google has decided to use your name and profile to bolster the blinding authenticity of its advertising.

Yes, without paying you. Well, this is the free economy, isn’t it?

Oddly, some people seem stunned by this — despite the fact that the program largely resembles Facebook’s Sponsored Stories.

So, evidence of a small movement against Google’s ploy has emerged. It involves putting naked Photoshopped pictures of Google’s Larry Page, clutching a rose to his face, on everyone’s profile page.

Well, that’s close. A tweet retweeted by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber suggests that some Google users are choosing to replace their own Google Profile picture with a shot of G… [Read more]
