It’s been almost three centuries since Bach wrote The Well-Tempered Clavier, a simple set of compositions that became definitive in music theory. J.S. probably would’ve been surprised—but delighted—by the work of Luisa Pereira, who has translated some of his rules into the most modern form imaginable: The sequencer.
The nature of how electrons, atoms, and photons interact and affect humans takes center stage in a new Google short film about research at the company’s recently-unveiled quantum computing lab called the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab.

In 2012, Facebook announced that users who never took advantage of the “Who can look up your Timeline by name?” feature would lose access to that search setting option, which had been around for a while and was swapped out with different options. Those who were using the setting could continue to do so, however, […]
SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — This picturesque beachfront city plans to start charging fitness trainers who use its parks as gymnasiums after months of complaints from residents that commercial classes are crowding out picnickers and others from Santa Monica’s public spaces.
The City Council voted 5-1 Tuesday night to approve an ordinance requiring the fees, with prices to be determined by the number of people enrolled in a particular class. Fees will start at several hundred dollars.
The ordinance also bans exercise classes on Sundays from Santa Monica’s signature Palisades Park with its stunning oceanfront views.

There are some things you won’t readily admit, aren’t there?
You occasionally have difficult thoughts involving Ryan Reynolds, Zeppelins, and clockwork mice.
Sometimes, you fantasize about walking into work in only your underwear and singing the French national anthem.
And then there’s your predilection for sniffing people as they walk by.
But we’ve all reached the stage where we’re prepared to admit that, very occasionally, we have viewed uplifting material of an adult nature on our portable devices. Haven’t we?
It seems that we haven’t. For, as The Washington Post reports, a new Pew Internet and American Life Project report (PDF) has been tossed out to the world. It reveals that hardly anyone ever watches online porn.
The survey asked respondents to speak candidly about their online video behavior; 57 percent of adults cheerily admitted to watching comedy shows. Almost the same number took gre… [Read more]

As Claudia and Stan Gocman watched the unedited footage of their wedding, their stomachs began to turn. There they were, all dolled up and happy on the screen, but a steady barrage of hate filled their ears.
The Gocmans were shocked. The raw footage their videographer Anthony Aurelius had sent them was full of horribly offensive and anti-semitic remarks — most of which seemed to have come from Aurelius himself.
“Some of the Jewish women are very beautiful to look at,” a man, believed to be Aurelius, says in the video. “But I can tell you, they’d be right f—ing cows. Very f—ing snooty, they’d be a pain in the arse.”
The Republican Party has been “badly damaged” by the government shutdown, according to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Thursday evening, which finds public opinion souring on the GOP and some of its core positions.
Americans blamed Republicans over President Barack Obama for the shutdown by a margin of 22 percentage points, with 53 percent saying the GOP deserved more blame, and 31 percent saying Obama did. Approval ratings for the Republican Party and the tea party were at 24 percent and 21 percent respectively — both record lows as measured by NBC/WSJ.
Democrats aren’t wildly popular either. Obama’s approval rating is a marginally positive 47 percent, while the Democratic Party is at 39 percent, and congressional Democrats are at 36 percent.
