Zim, stylish and powerful Sub $800 3D Printer with dual head

Last week, I met with Philippe Guglielmetti, CEO of Zeepro, the company behind the new consumer 3D printer Zim. Zeepro is successfully raising funds via Kickstarter to bring this sexy and powerful sub-$800 3D printer to market. Since Chris Anderson stated that “3D printing will be bigger than the web” when he left Wired in 2012, the desktop 3D printer battle is raging, and it feels like there is a new one popping up on Kickstarter every month.

I have not seen Zim in action yet, but just from the videos and the specifications, I am really impressed by the product design and the performance of this new comer in the personal 3D printing world.

Compared to the most popular devices currently available in this category, namely the Makerbot Replicator 2 and 2X, and the Cubify Cube and Cube X , the Zim performs better (on the paper) for a lower price point and a sleeker design. The $347 Pirate3D Bucaneer, which will only be available for pre-order in December, delivers an elegant and minimalistic design as well; however, it packs fewer features. You can support Zeepro via its Kickstarter campaign and get a Zim with one extruder for $599 or with 2 extruders for $799.

iKettle Can be Controlled over Wi-Fi: Steam Signals

Despite its uninspired name, the iKettle seems like a good idea. It’s an electronic kettle that you can control over your Wi-Fi network. Of course, you can really only ask a kettle to do one thing: heat some water. But iKettle excels not by what it does but when it does it.

    ikettle from firebox 620x620magnify

The basic trick of the iKettle is that you can order it to boil from your mobile device. It does this with the help of a Wi-Fi Base unit. But it also has two useful modes called “Wake up” and “Welcome Home.”

    ikettle from firebox 2 300x250
    ikettle from firebox 3 300x250
    ikettle from firebox 4 300x250
    ikettle from firebox 5 300x250

Based on the video below, with Wake up mode you can set a time for when the kettle will send you a message asking you if you want it to heat water. This makes it a pretty good alarm clock – if you don’t wake up on time, you might miss your morning drink. I’m assuming that Welcome home mode is just a second preset time, or perhaps the base unit can detect when your mobile device pops back in to your local Wi-Fi network.

You can pre-order the iKettle from Firebox for about $160 (USD). I predict that iKettle 3G will be able to refill itself. Delivering the hot drink to a person won’t come until the iKettle 5S. That and LTE.

    LG G Pro Lite Announced

LG G Pro Lite AnnouncedIt does seem as though LG has taken a page out of Samsung’s playbook – that is, by introducing a smartphone with a large display without having it break the bank in terms of budget. Hence, LG is proud to announce the LG G Pro Lite, where it will arrive with a 5.5” IPS display as well as special user interface features. To make sure that the large display is adequately powered, LG has also thrown in a generous 3,140mAh battery into the LG G Pro Lite, where it will be accompanied by other hardware features such as an embedded Stylus Pen, stereo speakers and Dual SIM support with a dedicated Hot Key.

The LG G Pro Lite was also designed in such a way where it will come with an ultra-narrow bezel so that you get to enjoy an incredible edge-to-edge viewing experience, while the slim design itself can be best described to deliver an optimal one-handed grip. Convenient user interface features are also found here, just like what you can find on LG’s other premium G Series smartphones. There is no word on pricing, but the LG G Pro Lite will be available in Latin America, where that will be followed by markets in Asia, Russia, China, India and the Middle East.

Some of the key specifications include a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal memory that can be expanded via a microSD memory card slot, an 8-megapixel shooter at the back with a 1.3-megapixel camera in front, and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean in tow. [Press Release]

Piena is like a coffee maker for baby formula

Try not to confuse this with your coffee maker.

    (Credit: Piena)

If you have a baby, you have your hands full. Mixing up formula takes time and care is required to get it down to the right temperature. For a $149 pledge on Indiegogo, you can hand that duty off to a kitchen gadget.

The Piena Tender Touch baby formula maker is like a coffee maker for infants. You place the powder in a special container that can hold up to 24 ounces and keep it sealed up, fresh and dry, for up to four weeks. Fill the separate water reservoir. Turn the machine on and it boils the water, then cools it to near body temperature.

When the water gets to the right temp, it dispenses it into a bottle below. A dial on the powder container drops the right amount into the water. Shake it up and go feed your hungry baby. The whole process takes just a couple minutes.
