The next phablet from HTC will be the HTC One Max. A few days ago, we mentioned that the Global Certification Form had approved the device meaning launch was imminent. We didn’t know at the time was a firm date for when the smartphone will be unveiled. That firm launch date has now been tipped. […]
Nuclear fusion, the same process that powers the sun, could provide us with limitless cheap energy—but experiments to date have always used more power than they created. Now, though, researchers have apparently tipped that balance, making fusion a real possibility.

It looks like Google’s Hangouts app could soon absorb new communications abilities with integration of text and picture messaging, according to screenshots and a report that surfaced Monday.
Hangouts originally debuted as a video chat tool for Google+, but Google built into it the instant-messaging ability that formerly shipped in the Google Talk app for Android. Now it’s possible that SMS and MMS services also could be built in, according to a report at Android Police.
Google has promised SMS integration into Hangouts, so the biggest question about the feature was when and how it would arrive.
The screenshots posted there show messages received “via SMS” text messaging and a text-input field that prompts, “Send an SMS message.” It also shows options to turn on SMS messaging and to retrieve MMS picture messages.

While Google has shown some effort at combating malware for Android devices, the numbers do not lie as it has been recently found that about 79% of malware targets Android devices, while malware for iOS sits at a lowly 0.7%. This is not to say that iOS is the perfect system, it’s just the way Apple and Google have setup their respective ecosystems, but it seems that despite these numbers, Google chairman, Eric Schmidt, seems to believe that the Android operating system is more secure than the iPhone. When told that Android has notorious security problems, Schmidt was quoted as saying, “Not secure? It’s more secure than the iPhone,” which reportedly drew some laughs from the audience. (more…)

Recently LG Display announced that they would be mass producing flexible OLED displays for smartphones, and now it looks like another LG division has something to boast as LG Chem has announced that they will begin the production of curved batteries, which presumably will allow smartphone manufacturers, such as themselves, to design and manufacturer uniquely designed smartphones. These batteries will use LG’s patented “Stack and Folding” technology that will be able to be used to power smartphones, watches, or even glasses (is LG hinting at a Google Glass competitor?).
One of the misconceptions of flexible displays is that we can look forward to devices that can be folded in half or rolled up and put into our pockets. However while the display itself can be bent or folded, the components within the phone all need to be of similar flexibility, which means that flexible displays will only add a degree of curvature to phones, or perhaps allow for a wrapped-around design. However with LG announcing curved batteries, it’s one step closer to fully flexible and bendable smartphones. It will be interesting to see which device LG will choose to debut their new technology with and we can’t wait to see how other smartphone manufacturers, namely Apple, HTC, Sony, and Motorola, will respond.

Despite BlackBerry not exactly being the hottest brand at the moment (although they did nab a spot on Top 100 Innovators of 2013), it seems that the company still has a handful of loyal customers as evidenced in Malaysia where the BlackBerry Z30 was launched a couple of days ago on the 5th of October. The handset was offered by local carrier, Celcom, and the launch saw about 100 individuals who started lining up as early as 8am. According to the reports, BlackBerry managed to sell about 200 units of the BlackBerry Z30 in a matter of 2 hours, and we expect that the number will grow as more customers are introduced to the device over time.
We’re not sure how many Z30 units have been sold worldwide, but 200 units in 2 hours is a pretty decent effort by BlackBerry, granted it is not the eye-watering millions that companies such as Apple and Samsung have managed to rack up in the past. The BlackBerry Z30 will be BlackBerry’s largest handset to date and sports a 5” HD display and a quad-core processor, making it a more attractive device in a market where large displays are starting to become a highly desired feature. Will BlackBerry be able to replicate this success in other markets? We guess only time will tell.
