The Real Mac Mini
Posted in: Today's ChiliOn numerous occasions, I’ve thought about going on eBay and picking up an original Macintosh, just so I could have one in my office? But I always talk myself out of it because I don’t really have the desk space for what amounts to a museum piece. Now, one enterprising hacker has the solution – a miniature Macintosh.
Not only does this 1/3rd scale Macintosh look exactly like the original, it’s actually functional.
While it doesn’t have the brains of an actual Mac, it uses a Raspberry Pi miniature PC, along with Macintosh emulator to replicate the experience of using an original Macintosh – only smaller.
RetroMacCast host John Leake built this marvel of miniaturization by hand carving and bending PVC, and set the teensy Rasperry Pi circuit board, power supply and a 3.5″ LCD inside the case. Given the fact that John made the case by hand, it’s just that much more impressive.
Its display only runs at 320×200 resolution, less than the 512×342, 9″ screen found in the Macintosh 128K. Still, this mini Mac has an HDMI output for driving larger screens, as well as USB and Ethernet ports. Unlike the original Macintosh, this one boots off of an SD card, which should prove much faster and more reliable than 3.5″ diskettes.
Congrats on an amazing build, John! If you’d like to learn more about how he built his mini Mac, be sure to check out his blog. You need to start selling these now. I’d buy one in a heartbeat.

So, you know how the federal government all shut down because Congress failed to come up with a budget to pay the employees? Well, the members of the special committee set up to investigate the intelligence community just threw in the towel, too. But they weren’t even getting paid in the first place.

Samsung is known to develop a number of variants of its flagship devices. Earlier this year it released the Galaxy S4 smartphone and followed it up with a rugged water and dust proof variant, a mini variant and a photography centric variant. So it doesn’t come as a surprise to hear that Samsung might be working on a number of variants for its other flagships. The latest from Korea’s ETNews suggests that the company might be developing rugged water and dust proof variants of the Galaxy Note 3 as well as the Galaxy S5.
It doesn’t seem too good to be true that a rugged Galaxy Note 3 is currently in the pipeline, it is likely that Samsung might launch it somewhere down the line, but we still can’t say that for sure seeing as how the company itself hasn’t made an indication of such a variant. Its the Galaxy S5 rumor that seems too good to be true at this point in time. The report claims that Samsung’s next flagship smartphone will be water and dust proof out of the box. There is still a lot of time left till the Galaxy S lineup reaches the end of its release cycle, and there isn’t a lot of information on the Galaxy S5 to go on at this point in time. What has been consistently rumored though is the possibility that Galaxy S5 might swap plastic for a metal body, but that too remains to be confirmed. No word as yet on when a rugged Galaxy Note 3 will be launched.

Moto X Down To $99 At Best Buy
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe fruit of Google and Motorola’s marriage was revealed in August, the company’s much rumored Moto X smartphone has been around for a couple of months now, it is the first flagship smartphone that Motorola has released as a wholly owned Google company. Best Buy has slashed the price in half and is now offering the Motorola Moto X for $99 on contract. The move comes merely after a month has passed since the official launch of the Moto X.
The Moto X has a 4.7 inch OLED 1,280×720 pixel resolution display. Under the hood a qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor functions as the engine, being backed up by 16GB or 32GB of onboard storage. Its a pretty decent smartphone that runs Android 4.2.2 out of the box and has been carried by all four major U.S. carriers. Best Buy’s $99 price for the Moto X requires users to take out a two year service contract with any of those carriers, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile to be precise. Those who have been holding out on purchasing a Moto X, or any flagship Android smartphone for that matter, might find themselves by Best Buy’s offer given the fact that other flagship smartphones usually cost $100 more right now.
