106 Early Doctor Who Episodes Found at TV Station in Ethiopia

I’ll admit that despite my love for science fiction and things geeky I’ve never been a fan of Doctor Who. I tried watching the show and I’ve never succeeded in making it through the first commercial break. If you are a big fan of the show you may be excited to hear that a number of episodes from early in the series have been rediscovered – some of which were believed to have been lost forever.

As the story goes, when BBC purged a bunch of old footage they trashed some who early Doctor Who episodes featuring William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton. An incredible 106 of these episodes were discovered at the Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency.

Among the rediscovered episodes are several that were only on the air one time. Those episodes include The Crusade, The Enemy of the World, and The Ice Warriors. Indications are that BBC sold the episodes to the Ethiopian television agency before destroying the originals. The BBC is reportedly currently in the process of having those copies returned. Exactly what the BBC will do with these episodes is unknown, presumably they’ll be shown again – or sold on disc – to fans of the series.

Samsung Gear Glass Google Glass Competitor Rumored

Samsung Gear Glass Google Glass Competitor Rumored

Wearable tech is without a doubt the next frontier in technology and Google has been riding that wave for quite some time now. Google Glass has already been rolled out to a select few Explorers who are putting it through its paces before the anticipated public release next year. There appears to be a lot of interest in this product, which puts the digital world in the user’s line of sight. Google Glass will obviously have to battle with competitors, Recon Jet has already beaten it to the market, but a latest rumor suggests that Samsung might be developing its own Glass rival.

The rumor comes from Eldar Murtazin, who has a varied track record. Earlier this year he predicted that Tizen was dead, Samsung responded that its homegrown OS isn’t going away anywhere. Murtazin says that Samsung is developing its “own version” of Google Glass which is likely to be released in April or May 2014 under the Gear Glass brand. Last month Samsung released the Galaxy Gear smartwatch, so it won’t come as a surprise if it carries the Gear brand over to other wearable devices. The Glass bit of its moniker might trouble Google, but then again, its not like Samsung has officially confirmed that it is indeed working on a Google Glass rival.

LUMOback posture sensor will straighten you out

    LUMOback
Do you ever look at a picture someone took of you and realize how terrible your posture was? Of course, for the next few days, you try to correct this terrible flaw, and any time someone snaps a photo, you do your best to straighten up. However, a few weeks pass and you’re back to your old habits again. You can always ask family and friends to remind you when you’re slouching, but that places a responsibility on them that they shouldn’t really have.

The best way to go about changing an aspect of your life is to do it yourself because you want to see the difference. Of course, a little assistance is always nice, but you can’t rely on others to help you with your issues. The LUMOback Posture Sensor will help you do just that, by giving you gentle reminders throughout the day.

This is a strap that is worn on your lower back, and will connect wirelessly with your smartphone. The app it corresponds with will tell you all of the specifics of how you’re standing and sitting over the course of the day. Whenever you spine isn’t doing what it should be, it will vibrate to let you know you need to readjust. This $150 device can be worn over or under your clothes, and can also act as a activity and sleep tracker.

Madonna as art critic? Twitter makes it so

(Credit: Video screenshot by Leslie Katz/CNET)

The Material Girl is taking to Twitter to give users input on their own (artistic) material.

On Tuesday, Twitter users will be able to tweet artistic work like poetry, images, and 6-second Vine videos to Madonna using the hashtag #artforfreedom, and the recording artist will be online to provide feedback on users’ work. Madonna is calling it a “live art curation,” and it will start at 1:30 p.m. PT.

The event is part of a partnership Madonna just launched with the hashtag’s namesake, Art For Freedom, an initiative that encourages artwork on the topic of social justice.

Last week, the singer introduced a grant program in which she’ll pick one artist a month over the next year, and donate $10,000 to the nonprofit or project of his or her choice.

Why Is the Fox News Room Full of Absurdly Giant iPads?

Over on Fox News’ website, Shepard Smith gives us a tour of the the Fox News Deck’s upgraded studio which inexplicably features a team of staffers in the background working at what appear to be gigantic tablets. According to Smith, those are actually "information specialists" frantically pawing away at what Fox calls BATS—or big area touchscreens (most likely Microsoft hardware running Windows 8)—that puts 55-inches of Twitter feeds and other news sources at their fingertips. Samsung Denies Best Buy Acquisition Rumors

Samsung Denies Best Buy Acquisition Rumors

Samsung and Best Buy, one of the biggest retailers in the U.S., already enjoy quite a comfortable relationship. The Korean manufacturer has opened up “Experience Shops” in nearly 1,400 Best Buy outlets, which are essentially a Samsung store within a Best Buy store. The outlets benefit from the foot traffic while Best Buy would presumably be earning from loaning out its retail space. Recently there was chatter in South Korea that perhaps Samsung might be willing to take its relationship with Best Buy to the next level, by acquiring a stake in the retailer. Today Samsung has officially put those rumors to rest by issuing a short and to the point statement on its blog.

In a statement on the official Samsung Tomorrow blog, the company says that reports about Samsung considering acquiring a stake in Best Buy are “not true.” It further adds that no talks have taken place between Samsung and Best Buy regarding “stock acquisition of either company.” Rumors about the possibility of this stake acquisition were first floated by a Korea Times report, which also claimed that Samsung vice chairman Lee Jae-Yong had met with senior Best Buy executives to discuss “pending business issues.” One can only guess what these pending issues are.
