CBS App For Android And Windows 8 Released

Back in March CBS launched a new app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The app allowed users to watch full episodes of a number of daytime, primetime and late night TV shows on their iOS device, through streaming. By releasing this app, the network joined the likes of ABC and NBC, who have offered a streaming app to their customers for quite some time. After initially rolling out the app only for iOS, CBS is now going multiplatform. The network has released the CBS app for Android and Windows 8.

Shows such as The Big Bang Theory, The Late Show with David Letterman and NCIS will all be available for streaming on your Android, iOS or Windows 8 device. Through the app, users will be able to view all episodes of CBS’s new and returning primetime shows eight days after their initial broadcast on the network. Late night shows will be available for streaming after only 24 hours of the initial broadcast. That’s not all, the network has also said that it plans to bring the app over to the BlackBerry 10 platform by the end of this year. The official CBS app for Android is available now from Google Play Store and for Windows 8 from the Windows Store.

This is a Potatomato Plant: You Say Potato, I Say Tomato…

Potatoes grow underground. Tomatoes grow above the ground. The TomTato plant grows both potatoes underground and tomatoes above ground… at the same time!

I don’t know what the folks over at British horticultural firm Thompson and Morgan were thinking, but they managed to turn a far-off idea into reality. It took them ten years, but they finally figured out how to make a plant grow potatoes and tomatoes without genetically modifying it.

The process involved grafting, more grafting, and even more grafting before the team achieved success. Incredibly, the plants were combined without genetic modification.

Thompson and Morgan director Paul Hansord explains: “It has been very difficult to achieve because the tomato stem and the potato stem have to be the same thickness for the graft to work… It is a very highly skilled operation. We have seen similar products. However, on closer inspection the potato is planted in a pot with a tomato planted in the same pot – our plant is one plant and produces no potato foliage.”

Pretty weird, but still amazing, isn’t it?

    CEATEC 2013 wrap-up: self-driving cars, moon-walking simulators and DoCoMo’s ‘Intelligent Glass’

This year’s CEATEC was a bit quieter than previous years, perhaps due to the lack of brand new consumer products. Fortunately, the show managed to substitute in plenty of future tech demos, while Nissan made more progress on the promise of a self-driving car and Japanese carrier DoCoMo offered up …

iPhone 5s Top Selling Smartphone On All U.S. Carriers In September [Report]

iPhone 5s Top Selling Smartphone On All U.S. Carriers In September [Report]

Apple unveiled the new iPhones last month. Ten days after the announcement, it released the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in a number of select markets around the globe. The U.S. was obviously one of those markets. Lines had started forming up outside Apple Retail Stores days before the actual release, it became evident that significant consumer demand existed for Apple’s newest smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy S4 was the top selling smartphone in the U.S. prior to the launch of the new iPhones. It has been dethroned by the iPhone 5s in September, says research firm Canaccord Genuity. The iPhone 5s is now said to be the top selling smartphone on Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile last month.

Canaccord doesn’t mention in the report exactly how many units have been sold on all four carriers, it says that the Galaxy S4 has now been pushed down to the second slot. On some carriers, it also appeared to be in third place. The firm claims that iPhone 5s is seeing “strong sales,” same has been said for its younger sibling, the iPhone 5c. During the last quarter of this year, Apple might end up moving 52 million iPhones around the world, Canaccord believes. Sales are expected to retain momentum over the following weeks, given that the holiday shopping season is just around the corner.

BlackBerry Reportedly Seeks Interest In Acquisition From Google, Intel, Samsung And More

BlackBerry Reportedly Seeks Interest In Acquisition From Google, Intel, Samsung And More

BlackBerry’s troubles have been well documented in the press over the last few weeks. News about the company, usually bad, has been making the rounds a lot. It announced a nearly $1 billion operating loss, a significant drop in its market share and the layoff of almost 40 percent of its entire workforce. In the midst of all this, BlackBerry also received a non-binding buyout offer of $4.7 billion from Fairfax Financial. The letter of intent signed includes a “go-shop” clause, which basically means that BlackBerry is free to seek other buyers while Fairfax conducts its due diligence. Reuters reports that the Canadian manufacturer is seeking “preliminary expressions of interest” from the likes of Google, Intel, Samsung and more.

Google wants to patent splitting the restaurant bill

This is piece of sushi from Jiro's restaurant in Tokyo. To me, it looks like a man lying on his back laughing, after getting a free meal from his friends.

It’s easy to forget sometimes, but Google exists to make you happy.

In the pecking order, you do come slightly behind its own engineers, for whom many of its products are truly designed. But you’re still in the company’s thoughts somewhere.

Clearly, though, some of its engineers (and, by extrapolation, Google assumes you too) have been having difficulties in restaurants.

It’s not so much that they’ve been leaving phone prototypes in them. It’s that they’ve been going out for group dinners and then one or two Googlies have guzzled beyond the norm, leaving the splitting of the bill in an unbalanced state.

“Jason had 7 kir royales. Marina had 6 margaritas and Azielina must have knocked back 14 glasses of Sauvignon Blanc. So, um, dividing the total by, um, 7 and multiplying it by, oh, whatever, I’m drunk anyway.”

Days later, though, the person who feels they’ve paid too much of the whole feels wholly resentful.

This resentment has now been turned, as all resentments should, into a patent application. For Google … [Read more]

iPhone 5c At Walmart Now Going For $45 On Contract

iPhone 5c At Walmart Now Going For $45 On Contract

Last month Apple released the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c in the U.S., as well as a number of select markets. In the U.S., both smartphones were offered by Apple Retail Stores, carriers and retailers on launch day. Prior to the release, Walmart announced that it would sell the iPhone 5c $20 less than its contract price for $79. Target soon matched this price. In a bid to drive more sales, Best Buy just recently announced that the iPhone 5c would be available for $50 on contract, though this was a limited time promotion. Walmart strikes back by slashing the new plastic iPhone’s price once again, offering it for $45.

As mentioned above, this is the on contract price, meaning that customers will have to choose a two year service contract with Verizon, AT&T, Sprint or T-Mobile. Sarah Spencer McKinney, director of corporate communications for Walmart, tells ABC News that customers should expect the price to remain constant at $45 throughout the holiday season. There’s no doubt in the fact that the retailer is offering a substantial discount on the on contract price of iPhone 5c. Apple’s suggested retail price for the smartphone is $99.99 along with a two year contract. So if you’re in the market for an “unapologetically” plastic iPhone, picking it up from Walmart will save you a decent amount of your hard earned dollars.

Nokia Lumia 1520 Purported Press Render Leaked

Nokia Lumia 1520 Purported Press Render Leaked

Later this month, Nokia is expected to unveil as many as six new devices and the much rumored Lumia 1520 is one of them. On October 22nd, Nokia has an event scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi, where it is likely to make these announcements. We’ve already heard a lot of rumors about the Lumia 1520, and there have been a plethora of leaks as well. A purported press render of the device has leaked, its shows off the new Nokia phablet in red. This really doesn’t come as a surprise as Nokia is known to offer its Lumia devices in a variety of colors.

This press render has been leaked by @evleaks, who has a pretty solid track record when it comes to these things. It is interesting to note how small the bezels are in this press render, this is quite different from previous Lumia devices. There have already been a lot of rumors about its specifications, what will set the Lumia 1520 apart from other Lumia devices is its supposed 6 inch display. The phablet is also said to have a 3,400mAh battery. No pricing or release information is available at this point in time, hopefully Nokia will elaborate more at its event in Abu Dhabi.
