Grand Theft Auto Online update arrives, brings multiplayer to Los Santos

Image

If you’re already looking for a more worthy Grand Theft Auto 5 adversary than a computer can generate, here’s the dirt: you can now play it online. Whether your battleground of choice is PlayStation Network or Xbox Live, only a “small title update” should be required to get online. Of course, that is assuming the game’s servers can handle the load. With over 16.5 million copies already in circulation Day 1 connectivity could land somewhere near the Sim City end of the scale, and Rockstar’s Social Club backend has already experienced some strain loading up pictures and stats from the single player edition. Assuming everything goes to plan however, players should be creating their avatars, forming online crime syndicates and visiting each other’s houses.

The Content Creator tool that will let players design their own heists is one of the features scheduled to launch later this fall, for more details on what is available right away, check out this blog post. Access appears to be open on both PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, although we’re already seeing reports of connection issues and “Rockstar cloud servers are not available right now” on both sides.

Samsung’s ChatON Surpasses BBM With 100 Million Users

Samsungs ChatON Surpasses BBM With 100 Million UsersThere are a plethora of messaging apps that users can choose from these days, although back in the day, BlackBerry’s BBM did reign supreme, but it looks like with the decline of BlackBerry, BBM might have taken a bit of a hit too, which might explain why they are now so eager to go cross-platform, and not to mention how Samsung’s own messenger app, ChatON, has finally overtaken BBM in terms of users. According to an announcement made by Samsung, the South Korean tech giant appears to be pretty pleased with itself as they have revealed that ChatON now plays home to more than 100 million users across a variety of platforms that the app is available on.

According to Samsung, “The service provides a seamless experience where users can access ChatON through PCs, Samsung feature phones, and all the major smart phone operating systems: Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.” With ChatON now boasting over 100 million users, this puts them about 25 million users ahead of BBM, although it’s still a far way from other apps such as Viber, WhatsApp, and Line, but still pretty impressive nonetheless. Do you guys think BBM will catchup once it releases on iOS and Android?

Verizon Honors Glitch That Gives Subscribers Unlimited Data Plans

Verizon Honors Glitch That Gives Subscribers Unlimited Data PlansSometimes when a company makes an error on its website when it comes to purchasing an item, they can choose to either honor it (gaining them a ton of praise and fans in the process), or choose to not honor it, which gets them a lot of flack and accusations of being greedy in the process. Well in the case of Verizon, it looks like this time round the carrier has decided to honor a glitch on its website which basically gave its customers unlimited data who were looking to upgrade their device, while at the same time keeping the subsidies on the phone which looks like a win-win situation for customers who managed to get in on this before the glitch was discovered.

As it stands customers looking to upgrade their devices will no longer be able to get unlimited data, although given that the opportunity was only a 6 hour window, we guess not many managed to take advantage of it. Unlimited data plans, at least for post-paid contracts, are no longer offered by some carriers. It was back in 2011 that Verizon announced that they would no longer be offering unlimited data, so if anything this kind of feels nostalgic!

iOS 7 Users Reporting iMessage Bug That Doesn’t Send Their Messages

iOS 7 Users Reporting iMessage Bug That Doesnt Send Their MessagesOne of the features of iMessage is that it allows an iMessage to be sent as a regular text message in the event that Apple’s servers go down, or if the other party, or yourself, do not have internet at the moment. However it seems that there are reports of iMessage failures in Apple’s Support Communities where users are claiming that some of their iMessages are not sent, or have been unreceived, or sent as a text message on a variety of iPhone devices running on iOS 7. There are also reports on how iMessages aren’t even converted to SMS text messages which could prove to be highly inconvenient for some users of the service.

According to the reports, this is an issue that might have started on the 18th of September, which is when iOS 7 was released to the public, but it seems that whatever the issue is, there are still ongoing reports despite Apple having released the iOS 7.0.2 update. As it stands there is a temporary solution which is to disable iMessage, reset the iPhone’s network settings, and then re-enable iMessage. Some are reporting that this solves their problem but are unsure if this is a permanent fix or a temporary one. Apple has yet to acknowledge this issue, but hopefully an update will be issued soon to correct it.

Gmail APK Teardown For Android Reveals That Ads Are Arriving

Gmail APK Teardown For Android Reveals That Ads Are ArrivingOne of the great things about Gmail for mobile devices is that they are ad-free, unlike the web version of the service. Given that it is a free service, it is understandable that Google is looking for a way to monetize it, and it seems that ads could be coming in the next version of the app for Android. According to the APK teardown by the folks at Android Police, it has been discovered that in Gmail 4.6, there is a strong likelihood that ads will be added to the app. This is according to strings that were discovered within the APK which makes multiple references to the ads.

There also appears to be a whole new library added to the mix called ads, which we guess is kind of obvious too. Based on what the folks at Android Police have found, it seems that the ads can actually be saved by users if they wish and will be stored within the inbox of their Gmail account. Alternatively dismissed ads will then be deleted. We’re not sure why anyone would want to save an ad, but we guess if you do, there’s an option for that. No word on when ads will be introduced, but we guess we’ll keep an eye out for that.

Some Xbox 360 Banned By Microsoft For Exploiting Loophole

Some Xbox 360 Banned By Microsoft For Exploiting LoopholeIt seems that for a while now, there were some Xbox 360 gamers who were well aware that Microsoft had been releasing some games for free in lesser known markets, like in Oman and Bosnia, titles which would have otherwise cost them money if they were to buy it from the Microsoft Xbox Live marketplace in the US. What they did was that they created accounts that were supposedly based in these regions and have been enjoying the free games thanks to this loophole. Naturally when Microsoft found out, they weren’t too pleased about it and many Xbox 360 gamers have since found their consoles banned because of it. (more…)

Gold iPhone 5 Stickers Apparently A Hot Ticket Item In China

Gold iPhone 5 Stickers Apparently A Hot Ticket Item In ChinaSo we heard that the gold iPhone 5s turned out to be quite a hot ticket item despite initial reactions and critics who felt that, based on the photos, gold would be quite gaudy. In any case not everyone needs to upgrade to the iPhone 5s, or who can’t afford to upgrade, but at the same time wants a gold finish as well. Turns out that it is a good business opportunity because according to The Wall Street Journal, vendors in China are capitalizing on the fact that gold seems to be a favored color option and are selling stickers that can be stuck onto the back of iPhone 5 devices, giving the illusion that their phones come in a gold finish as well.

According to the WSJ, “Thousands of the stickers have been sold through stores on taobao.com in less than a month, reflecting strong demand for the golden device in China. While most of the consumer reviews for the stickers are positive, some users complained about discrepancies in color and size.” Gold has been looked upon in China as a symbol of wealth, which explains why it is so popular. In fact it has been reported that in other countries, such as Singapore, the gold iPhone 5s managed to sell out at local carriers within an hour. Looks like Apple struck gold with this finish!
