Pioneer ND-HUD10 Augmented Reality Heads Up Display

Pioneer ND HUD10 Augmented Reality Heads Up Display[CEATEC 2013] More and more companies are about to dive into the world of heads up displays, and for good reason, too. The basic and underlying idea of such heads up displays (HUDs for short) would be the make driving safer as it offers you additional information in front of your eyes without requiring you to shift your gaze away from the road that is right ahead. Needless to say, this would help reduce the number of possible accidents, and gives you the ability to see danger earlier.

Pioneer demonstrated this with their Pioneer ND-HUD10 augmented reality HUD device at CEATEC this year, and this particular device is meant to be mounted onto your sun visor which should be a staple in every vehicle. This would be adjustable in height so that it can suit just about every driver who decides to purchase this 63,000 yen device.

    Honda Uni-Cub Personal Mobility Device

Honda Uni Cub Personal Mobility Device[CEATEC 2013] I don’t know about you, but it does seem as though the personal mobility device segment in Japan is certainly heating up. Toyota had their delicious sounding “Toyota Winglet” that we saw earlier this morning, and here we are with the Honda Uni-Cub. Uni-Cub sounds a whole lot more like a personal mobility device than something that hails from a diner which specializes in selling chicken bits and pieces. The Uni-Cub does seem to work on the same principle as that of the Toyota Winglet, that is, by shifting your body weight, it will be able to help you get around without having to walk.

Dropbox update adds automatic screenshot saving, iPhoto imports

dnp Dropbox update brings automatic screenshot saving, iPhoto imports for Mac users

It’s not a huge update, but today Dropbox gains the ability to automatically save your computer screenshots. Next time you immortalize that Gchat, your screen-cap will be saved to your Dropbox account and copied to your clipboard as a link for sharing. (You’ll have the ability to opt out of this new feature, should you feel so inclined.) In a nod to Mac users, the cloud storage service is also adding automatic iPhoto imports. Dropbox has supported automatic photo uploads on Mac and Windows machines for some time now, but today’s new feature lets Mac users copy over all locally stored images — no SD card required. Check out the source link for more info.

    Sharp Health Care Support Chair

Sharp Health Care Support Chair[CEATEC 2013] We did mention that Japan has the world’s highest number of those who are 65 or older compared to the rest of the population – and this number is growing more and more by the year, having already hit the 20% mark. Hence, it is imperative that technology moved at a pace which will make sure that the elderly are able to get up and about with their daily lives without impairing their mobility. Sharp demonstrated their Health Care Support Chair at the CEATEC booth, where sitting on it would make you feel as though you were Captain James T. Kirk, ready to send the Enterprise (or in this case, the rest of your household) into warp travel.

Google Docs gets a subtle facelift, shifts the focus to content

Google Docs gets a facelift, shifts the focus to content

You can’t say that the Google Drive crew isn’t looking out for you. Following the transition of QuickOffice for Android and iOS into a freebie, the team is now blessing Google Docs with a slightly more attractive interface. First and foremost, you’ll now find a familiar, colorful product icon in the upper left part of the web app, which links back to Drive. This refinement applies to Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings, Forms and Apps Script, and it could very well help users of another office suite feel more at home. Additionally, the headers within each of the editors are now more compressed, which Google hopes will allow users to focus more easily on their content. Naturally, these aren’t the most dramatic visual changes, but then again, do you really want a card-based UI for your document editor?

The end is Nye for Bill on ‘Dancing With The Stars’

    He is a, um, something.

(Credit: The Vocal Vault/YouTube Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

Like a Republican congressman with the government, Bill Nye’s doctor tried to shut him down.

At the end of last week’s breathless, insane attempt to be the body double of Beethoven dancing the paso doble on “Dancing With The Stars,” Bill Nye injured himself.

Lunging toward the lap of his partner, Tyne Stecklein, he tore his quadriceps tendon.

Like a good scientist, he went to see the doctor. The doctor cast a smug eye at him and said he wouldn’t recommend anything other than a wheelchair.

Nye decided to eschew science for pure religious faith. But he had platelet treatment, just to keep science happy.

Manfully, he decided he would perform a jazz routine, quad be damned. He might as well have mounted a quad bike.

For Stecklein produced a piece of choreography that involved trying to get Nye to move as little as possible.

    Sharp IGZO Frameless Concept Displays

Sharp IGZO Frameless Concept Displays[CEATEC 2013] We have seen TVs go from their large and fat form factors to being as slim as possible, and all the while that is happening, there was work done to increase the resolution count. Our minds were blown away when we first saw the visual quality difference between video CDs and DVDs, and the jump to Blu-ray discs (a moment of silence for the fallen HD DVD format, please) proved to be another milestone to remember. Not only that, all the time, bezels on TVs were getting thinner and thinner, so much so that smartphones like the LG G2, too, have adopted a similar approach. Sharp did show off their frameless concept displays that boasted of IGZO technology at CEATEC this year, and it looked fantastic.

NTT DoCoMo’s vision of ‘5G’ wireless: 100x faster than LTE, but not until 2020

NTT DoCoMo's vision of '5G' wireless 100x faster than LTE, but unlikely prior to 2020

We knew good and well that Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo would be divulging details about its 5G wireless plans at CEATEC, but the claims that we’ve stumbled upon here in Chiba are nothing short of bananas. Granted, the operator is making clear that its vision isn’t intended to reach implementation until 2020, and it confesses that a 5G standard has yet to be ratified. That said, it’s dreaming of a world where its network offers “1000 times the capacity and 100 times the speed as the current network.”

Representatives for the company told us that the challenge is going to be dealing with range limitations in higher frequency spectrum, but it plans to employ “high-frequency bandwidth by transmitting with a large number of antenna elements.” The goal for looking so far forward? It’s already seeing an insane appetite for video on networks that can barely maintain poise under the load, and the notion of transferring 4K content to the masses is going to require a substantial upgrade. CEATEC’s known as a place that allows companies to dream big and aim for the fences, but we’ll be honest — we’d really, really prefer that 2020 arrived sooner rather than later.
