Most of us will never have the chance to float about in the International Space Station and look down on the blue globe and swirling clouds of the Earth below. We mostly settle for stunning photographs. Soon, we’ll be able to settle for near-real-time streaming video online.

Canadian company UrtheCast is installing two cameras on the ISS today. Once in operation, they will live-stream high-def footage of the Earth through UrtheCast’s Web platform. Basic accounts for taking a peek at the views will be free. Users will also be able to access time-lapse compilations.

UrtheCast plans to broadcast satellite imagery and video for major Earth events and important locations. Account holders can even subscribe to favorite locations. For example, I could get a notice every time new shots of my home state, New Mexico, are logged.

Spotify Connect local streaming comes to Android

A couple of months ago, Spotify Connect was announced for iOS — a feature that allows you to wirelessly control (via your home WiFi network) music playing on Connect-compatible speakers with your phone. Good news for Spotify users with Premium accounts and Android devices today, as their version of the app has now been endowed with all of Connect’s powers. Of course, the number of devices currently compatible with the feature is fairly slim, as Pioneer and Bang and Olufsen are Spotify’s only official partners. But, ’tis the season and there are some quality, if pricey, Connect-enabled speakers and receivers to be had — remember, kids, Santa only brings you what you ask for.

The Surprisingly Complex Way That Scientists Measure Sea Level

Most of us have probably never given a second thought as to how sea level is determined. It’s basically where the ocean starts, right? Not even close. It turns out there are countless factors that have to be taken into account because the oceans simply aren’t at the same level all around the world.

Thor’s Hammer Charger – By the Gods, my phone is fully charged!

    thor_hammer_battery
Having enough power to get us through the day can be difficult. Wall plugs elude us, or are taken away by coworkers or coffee-shop homebodies. We’re always looking for a good charger to keep us going for as long as possible so we don’t have to rely on the grid, but what tips the scales for you to make a choice between one backup battery or another?

I would say Mjolnir would be heavy enough to tip it right? Seeing that the latest super hero movie was Thor, it shouldn’t be surprising that a whole slew of related merchandise was going to pop up. Seeing that he’s the god of thunder, a backup battery seems appropriate, and it’s always better that you get something useful and referential. This USB battery pack comes in three different versions, ranging from 2600 to 10400 mAh. While the higher end will take up to ten hours to charge, it will obviously pack more of a punch too. You can connect via micro USB or 2.0 USB, and it can take on anything from a smartphone to a tablet.

This is made of aluminum, zinc, and plastic, which is actually pretty heavy-duty for a charger. For novelty, every time you swing the hammer, it will light up and make sounds. This is great and all, but do try not to drop it, or it will likely go off and scare you out of your skin. While these are around $125, they are sadly only available in Asia at the moment. You can do special shipping, but it will cost an ungodly amount.

Fixes coming for Skype Messaging on Windows Phone; improved device syncing also in the works

If you’ve used Skype on Windows Phone, chances are you’ve dealt with out-of-sync and missed messages. Luckily, a fix is on the horizon: according to Skype product manager Jeff Kunins, who spoke with The Verge, Microsoft is aware of the issues and working to resolve them. Part of the problem, it seems, stems from Microsoft’s move from peer-to-peer networks for Skype to cloud-based servers.

Once the hiccups are fixed, users can expect syncing across devices to avoid any random bursts of old, already-read messages. Kunins also said that continuous notifications will run only on the device you’re currently using, as opposed to every Skype-running gadget you own. Few things are more headache-inducing than five different devices ringing at once, after all. Finally, Kunins hinted that the Skype app for Windows 8.1 will have “a lot of fun things” to offer. Stay tuned.

    Firefox Gets Its Television Debut

This article was written on December 13, 2006 by CyberNet.

    Firefox 2 TV

Congratulations to Firefox for having its television debut earlier this week. Their are four user-created commercials that Mozilla is airing in the San Francisco and Boston areas and Mozilla Links has a listing of the times that the commercials will air (which apparently ends tonight).

At the end of the commercial users are presented with a hyperlink, firefox.com/tv, to visit that offers a download link for the browser along with the opportunity to watch the four commercials. You might notice that the URL I hyperlinked on the firefox.com/tv is a little different because users visiting that URL are forwarded to another address, and that address is the one that I hyperlinked to. That way it will help Mozilla keep accurate stats as to who is really coming to the site from the commercial.

I am really excited that Firefox is looking at other methods of advertising even though the word-of-mouth has brought them millions and millions of users. It will surely help in brand recognition so that when someone hears Firefox they may think “oh yeah, I saw that on a commercial once.” Not only that, but it is awesome that the commercials being aired are all created by fans of the browser and not by an outside company…making this even more memorable.

Congratulations to Mozilla and Firefox for this big milestone!
