2013 Apple Black Friday Deals Finally Confirmed

The 2013 Apple Black Friday deals have finally been confirmed, the company confirmed today that it is going to offer deals both online and its retail stores. In the online store, special Black Friday pricing for products will be available from midnight to midnight, so customers will have a full 24 hours to get their orders in. Apple is likely to cater to a large number of customers on Black Friday, not only due to the discounts it is going to offer, but it hasn’t been long since the company released several new products. Customers will be lining up to purchase its new iPhones, iPads and even its refreshed MacBooks.

Up till now, Apple hasn’t said exactly what the special pricing is going to be and which products will be eligible. Last year, nominal discounts were offered on the prices of iPads, iPods as well as various other products. Apple shaved off $100 on MacBooks on Black Friday last year, and with the company only recently having refreshed the Retina MacBook Pro models, customers holding out on them will now have an added incentive after Thanksgiving. Products purchased through the Apple online store will be shipped free of charge on Black Friday, customers won’t have to make the minimum spend they’re usually required to qualify for free shipping. 23andMe Must Stop Selling DNA Tests, Says FDA

Something’s not quite right about 23andMe’s DNA analysis kits, and the Food and Drug Administration is on it. The agency ordered 23andMe to stop selling the kits until the Google-backed company can prove that they actually work. Sounds reasonable.

    Top BlackBerry Executives Depart Company

    Top BlackBerry Executives Depart Company

BlackBerry has a lot of work to do if it wants to turn its fortunes around. It took the first step by ousting former CEO Thorsten Heins and appointing turn-around legend John S. Chen as the interim CEO. Today, the company announced that it has made some changes in the management and board ranks. BlackBerry COO Kristian Tear is leaving the company, and so is its Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben.

BlackBerry’s Chief Financial Officer Brian Bidulka is now being replaced by James Yersh, who has worked at the company since 2008 as a senior vice president. Bidulka isn’t being shown the door immediately however, unlike Boulben and Tear, he will remain at the company as a special advisor to John Chen for the remainder of this fiscal year to assist with the company’s transition. In a statement, BlackBerry CEO John S. Chen once again reiterated his previous comments that the company is in it for the long-haul, and that it has a “strong cash position and continues, by a significant margin, to be the top provider of trusted and secure mobile device management solutions to enterprise customers.” It doesn’t come as a surprise that these executives have been relinquished of their roles at the company. During their tenure, BlackBerry has burned through its cash pile and aggressively lost marketshare around the world. For BlackBerry’s new direction, it seems like a logical move for Chen to surround himself with an almost entirely new top management team. BlackBerry also said that board member Roger Martin has resigned from the board.

OneNote for Windows 8.1 now uses optical character recognition to search scanned images

OneNote for Windows 8.1 now uses optical character recognition to search scanned images

It’s been about four months since the OneNote app for Windows received a significant update. Today, though, Microsoft is adding several key features, with the biggest being the ability to scan images and then search them using keywords. This new Camera Scan feature, as it’s called, automatically crops and rotates photos, removing shadows and sharpening the image where necessary. Then, it uses optical character recognition (OCR) to search for words in scanned images, making it easy to find those meetings notes you took the other day.

Additionally, the update now allows you to save things using the Share Charm. And if you want a shot of the entire screen (and not just a specific item, like a recipe), you can use the Share Charm in a Windows app and then select” screenshot” from the Share Charm drop-down. (In desktop mode, screenshots are already the standard option.) Finally, the app now has both a full-screen view and a “Recent Notes” option, which shows all your notes in the order you last used them, regardless of whether you were viewing them on Windows, iOS or Android. These are accompanied by short previews, making it easier to zero in on what you want. And that about sums it up — to get the latest version, hit up the download link below.%Gallery-slideshow123034%

Mini Xbox One 3D Printed Model: Xbox 0.1

Dave Nunez loves to make tiny 3D printed models of video game consoles and computers. His latest mini gaming machine is based on none other than Microsoft’s latest and hugest, the Xbox One. It’s so tiny I don’t think a penny can fit into its disc slot – though a dime might.

As you can see Dave also made a tiny Kinect. Fortunately Dave’s not requiring you to print both – and there’s no massive power brick either. Perhaps Microsoft will consider both of these revisions.

18-rotor electric helicopter makes maiden flight

The Volocopter VC200, which made several remote-controlled flights, is designed to carry two people.

    (Credit: E-volo)

If its 18 rotors aren’t enough to get you excited, this crazy flying machine has a “pleasant sonorous sound,” according to German engineers who built the Volocopter VC200.

The successor to the even more outrageous Volocopter VC1 is being billed as “the world’s first green helicopter,” but a number of other projects have also claimed that title.

The multicopter recently took to the skies for the first time in a series of remote-controlled, unmanned flights in an arena in Karlsruhe, Germany.

“Rich and incredibly quiet sound, absolutely no noticeable vibrations in the flight, convincing structure with a great, new spring strut landing gear, and an extremely calm rotor plane,” was how Alexander Zosel, managing director of developer E-volo, described the nine flights, which lasted a total of about 20 minutes.
