Restaurant In Israel Offers 50% Discount If You Switch Off Your Phone

The obvious advantage of modern technology is that it allows us to be connected all the time, almost everywhere. Though some might say that the constant need to be connected has become more of an addiction. It is not unusual to see people at a restaurant engrossed in their smartphones, barely talking to the people they’re out with. While some of these people might be catching up on something important, most of them are usually checking social networks or playing games. We’ve all done it at some point. A restaurant owner in Israel is giving an incentive to his patrons if they switch off their phones, a full 50 percent discount on the check.

Jawdat Ibrahim owns the Abu Ghosh restaurant in a village of the same name outside Jerusalem. He is of the view that he’s changing something, a small change nonetheless, that might some day perhaps affect the “culture of eating” in modern times. Ibrahim didn’t like to see friends or even married couples sitting in silence and devoted to their devices, staring at them while the food grew cold, which meant that they ultimately sent it back to be reheated. He hopes that this added incentive might push patrons to appreciate the conversation, companionship and obviously the food. The restaurant initially tried collecting phones at the entrace, though that proved to be cumbersome. Customers are now trusted to turn off their phones, silent mode won’t do as even texting is not permitted.

Facebook Isn’t Losing Teen Users, Says COO Sheryl Sandberg

Facebook Isnt Losing Teen Users, Says COO Sheryl Sandberg

It was reported recently that Facebook use amongst teens was starting to decline. Quite a lot was written about this as people speculated that perhaps the world’s biggest social network was no longer “cool” enough for most teens to use. During Facebook’s last earnings call, CFO David Ebersman said that the company “did see a decrease in daily users partly among younger teens.” These few words sparked hundreds of articles about how Facebook might be becoming irrelevant for younger teens. Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg says that the reaction to Ebersman’s comment “has been blown out of proportion” and that the overall teen usage of Facebook in the U.S. “remains stable.” To be fair to Ebersman, he did say prior to making the comment about declining teen usage that “youth usage among U.S. teens was stable overall from Q2 to Q3.”

Sandberg reiterates that the “majority of U.S. teens use Facebook almost every day,” and that the vast majority of them are on the social network. She made these comments in an interview with AllThingsD, where she added that Facebook’s challenge is not to be the newest, which it obviously can’t be seeing as how its almost a decade old. She says that “we’re not trying to be the coolest. And we’re not trying to be the newest.” Facebook is trying to be the most useful, and that’s something that CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg stands behind. When quizzed about a possible acquisition of Snapchat, for which it reportedly offered $3 billion in cash, Sandberg neither confirms that an offer was put on the table nor denies that one might be made in the future.

Batmobile replica is street-legal with working flamethrower

A fully functional replica of the Batmobile from the 1989 Michael Keaton Batman film will be going up for auction Nov. 30. Many replicas have been made of the various models of Batmobile, but none with quite this level of authenticity. For starters, the flamethrower, afterburner, nine-inch-rise hydraulics and remote start all work. Oh, and […]

Need This New Innovation? Using Cheese To De-Ice Roads

De-Icing RoadsThere is something cheesy going on in Wisconsin these days and it isn’t a bunch of rabid Packer fans in cheese hats. This winter it is the roads in Milwaukee  that are getting spread with Gouda and cheddar — well, sort of. It is actually the waste product of the cheese-making process that is being tested for use as a road de-icer.

Leaked Memo Details Android 4.4 Release Date For Few Samsung Devices

Android users around the world are anxiously waiting for OEMs to detail Android 4.4 KitKat update roadmap. So far HTC has revealed when exactly it plans to update a few of its devices, and so has Motorola, which actually rolled out KitKat for Moto X even before the Google Play Edition smartphones got the update. A purported memo from Samsung India’s R&D department has been leaked online and it details when Samsung plans to update few of its devices to Android 4.4 KitKat. There’s no way to confirm the authenticity of this document, but its the only kind of roadmap related to the update for Samsung devices that’s available out there at this point in time.

According to the document, Samsung Galaxy S4 model GT-I9500 and Galaxy Note 3 model SM-N900 will be updated to Android 4.4 KitKat in January 2014. Galaxy S3 model GT-I9300 and Galaxy Note 2 model SM-N7100 are mentioned as well, slated to receive the much awaited update between March and April 2014. Samsung hasn’t said anything as yet officially regarding the Android 4.4 KitKat roadmap, but if this is a legitimate document, then it looks like people who own these devices will have to wait for quite a while before they can get some KitKat goodness on their Samsung device. PS4 Sold Out At Best Buy

PS4 Sold Out At Best Buy

Gaming console news has been constantly pouring in this month, because both Sony and Microsoft launched their new consoles over the past few weeks. Sony was the first to come out with its PlayStation 4 on November 15th. After launch day, the company announced that it had sold over one million units on launch day alone, an impressive feat considering the fact that PS4 was only launched in U.S. and Canada on the aforementioned date. The console seems to be doing well even after the initial rush, as Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly tells Reuters that the retailer has “pretty much run out” of PS4 stock.

As Sony gears up to launch the console in Europe and additional markets, it continues to see strong consumer demand in North America. This week Microsoft finally released its Xbox One console, and it too announced after launch day that it had sold over 1 million units under 24 hours, however the Xbox One was initially launched in 13 markets. Nevertheless, customers anxious to purchase the Sony PlayStation 4 from Best Buy need not worry. CEO Joly confirmed to Reuters that the retailer is going to receive new inventory next week, so that the console is very much in stock as customers flock to purchase the latest in gaming technology.

Polaris Sportsman ATV Will Never Get a Flat

If you’ve ever had a flat tire on your motorcycle, scooter, or ATV, you know how helpless you can feel. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, with no help coming, especially if you’re stuck somewhere without cell service. This can mean a trek back to civilization, or waiting for some help. This will never happen with this ATV.

The Polaris Sportsman WV850 HO ATV will stand up to any punishment you feel fit to deal upon it. It’s built to military specifications, and features the industry’s first non-pneumatic tires, which will never get flats, tear, rip or puncture. They can actually stand up to a .50-calibre round and still work for another 350 miles.

It comes equipped with a steel exoskeleton, racks, a large towing capacity, and powered by a 77 hp engine.

All this military technology doesn’t come cheap, as you’ll have to fork over at least $14,999(USD) to get yours. Think about how much money you’ll save on flats. Ok, it’s probably not that much, but this thing is still pretty damned impressive.

IRL: the Samsung Galaxy Round is a curved Note 3 that costs way too much

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

IRL: the Samsung Galaxy Round is a curved Note 3 that costs way too much

Flat smartphones are so early 2013; concave is the new hotness. At least, that’s what Samsung and LG might have you believe: both companies have brought new curved displays to a limited market for an extremely high price. The Samsung Galaxy Round and the LG G Flex probably won’t be on most people’s wish lists, as each one costs well above $900 in Korea. Still, we have a feeling we’ll be seeing plenty more (for a lower price) in the not-too-distant future. If this is indeed a sign of things to come, why shouldn’t we want to spend more time with the phone that started the whole craze? Fortunately for us, our friends at Negri Electronics — an online retailer which sells the Galaxy Round and G Flex — offered us the chance to use an imported Korean version for a few days. Take a look at the galleries below and read on for some detailed impressions.%Gallery-slideshow122862%
