HBO GO Now Supports Google Chromecast Across iOS, Android, Web

Companies like Hulu and Pandora have shown their support for the Chromecast, and today, one of the most popular streaming video service for a premium cable company has just announced they’re supporting the device. Of course, we’re talking about HBO GO. (more…)

Acer Aspire R7 newly-integrated digitizer adds to the oddity for the USA

Today the folks at Acer have taken the notebook with the Ezel-Hinge (the one that makes it look like the Enterprise from Star Trek) and have given it a reboot with an integrated digitizer. This piece of technology makes the machine able to work with an optional Acer active stylus, adding to the already above-and-beyond […]

Xbox One teardown reveals replaceable hard drive, off-the-shelf parts

The chip-obsessed gadget archaeologists at iFixit already have an Xbox One, and they’re already ripping it apart. Those monsters! While they’re not done dissecting and analyzing every single piece just yet, they’ve already found some interesting tidbits: for one, the Xbox One’s 500GB HDD is a standard SATA II 2.5-in. (of the Samsung Spinpoint variety, with an 8MB cache). Sure, you’ll have to pry open the system and carefully remove the Wifi and system speaker assembly to swap it out the HDD for a larger size, but if you’re willing to void the warranty and get up in there, serious storage is at your fingertips.

While you’re inside the Xbox One, you may also notice the amount of easy to replace, standard hardware. It’s true: 64 mm Torx screws hold the Xbox One’s internals together and a SATA data connector pairs the Blu-ray/DVD drive to the motherboard. As iFixit‘s teardown is still in action, they’ve yet to determined its repairability. And should they find out any dark secrets about the console in the process, we’ll keep you updated.

Update: iFixit awarded the Xbox One an 8 out of 10 repairability rating, placing it in the same easily repairable world as the PlayStation 4.

HBO Go Lands On Google Chromecast

Google has just announced that HBO Go is now available on Chromecast.

This means that Chromecast owners with an HBO Go subscription can now stream HBO’s content from their Android or iOS device, as well as the HBO Go web app.

Chromecast is Google’s $35 answer to the Apple TV, Roku, etc., letting users stream content from YouTube, Netflix, Pandora and more to their HDTVs from any device. It looks a bit like a USB dongle, and functions similarly to AirPlay in that users can control the TV from multiple devices, throwing content from an Android phone or tablet direct to the TV.

Here is what HBO’s CTO Otto Berkes has to say about it:

Google’s Chromecast is one of the newest, more exciting devices in the marketplace today, so we are very happy to bring this capability to our subscribers. From the beginning, our goal has been to bring HBO GO to the devices where viewers want to watch it and Chromecast definitely falls into that category.

World’s smallest FM receiver built with graphene, ruined by Psy

Researchers have been using graphene to develop an assortment of technologically advanced things for a while, from camera sensors and contact lenses all the way to frickin’ lasers. That’s why it’s not a surprise to see a group of engineers from Columbia University create the world’s smallest FM transmitter using the atom-thick material. The end product isn’t just for show, either, as it can pump tunes over the airwaves to a regular FM radio — the team even used Gangnam Style to prove that it works. As interesting as the teensy transmitter is, the engineers have no plans to build a radio for ants, and this is merely part of a larger study into nano-electromechanical systems. Now all we need is for someone to make a tiny violin and a pair of tweezers small enough for us to play.

Woman Implants Platinum Heart Into Her Eyeball

Woman Implants Platinum Heart Into Her Eyeball

We’ve seen people implant some interesting things into their bodies, such as the dude who implanted headphones into his ears or that guy who implanted a large biometric computer chip into his forearm. At least those two people had legitimate reasons to implant those objects into their bodies, but a heart sequin implanted into an eyeball? There’s just no reason for this. (more…)

Comet ISON Could Get so Bright We Might See It during the Day

It’s been a while since we talked about the comet ISON. We mentioned back in January that if the comet survives its brush with the sun later this month, it could be the brightest comet seen in hundreds of years. So far, the comet has remained intact as it heads towards its closest rendezvous with the Sun on November 28.

If the comet survives its brush with the Sun, it will head back out of our solar system and pass the Earth again. On its return trip away from the Sun, the comet will be so bright that some scientists believe we will be able to see it during the day. The last time a comet was so bright it could be seen during the day was in 1680.

Scientists are saying that ISON has the potential to be the “comet of the century.” ISON is already bright enough to be seen with the naked eye at night in some locations. If the comet survives, it will be at its brightest in early December.
