Have Fun With Google

Philipp Lenssen, author of Google Blogoscoped, has put together a book entitled “55 Ways To Have Fun With Google”. He covers a lot of interesting Google topics and there have been many people that have said they can’t put the book down! It will cost you $16.50 if you want to get a copy for yourself, but it sounds like it will be worth it. Here is the description of the book:

You probably use Google everyday, but do you know… the Google Snake Game? Googledromes? Memecodes? Googlesport? The Google Calculator? Googlepark and Google Weddings? Google hacking, fighting and rhyming? In this book, you’ll find Google-related games, oddities, cartoons, tips, stories and everything else that’s fun. Reading it, you won’t be the same searcher as before! No programming skills needed. (From the author of Google Blogoscoped.)

I haven’t gotten a copy for myself but I probably will shortly. There is finally some fun reading for all of you geeks out there (including myself).

Macy Gets Robot To Launch Thanksgiving Day Parade

Macy Gets Robot To Launch Thanksgiving Day ParadeMacy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has somewhat received a boost from the technology side of things – where it is normally touted to be an unofficial ushering in of the holiday season. This year, a New York City official did not launch Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but rather, it was a robot that had the honor of doing so. This robot, known as “SONIC”, was the brainchild of students from The Woodlands High School in Texas.

Around 35 of them, where needless to say, all of them happen to also be members of a local robotics club, worked on SONIC to make it part of a competition which was led by FIRST, a non-profit organization that intends to boost up participation levels of youth when it comes to the fields of science and technology fields. SONIC had the grand honor of cutting the ribbon to kick off the massive celebration, but it is a good thing that SONIC was not alone, either, as there were another five robots hanging around, weighing 150 pounds apiece. These robotic brethren of SONIC happened to be constructed by student groups across the country, and their main task? To play a supporting role by shooting confetti along the parade route, all 2.5 miles of it. Now, if only there was another team of robots around to clean up all of the mess after everything’s said and done. Image via The Verge. [Press Release]

Apple Europe’s Black Friday Deals Offers Discounts, Not Gift Cards

Apple Europes Black Friday Deals Offers Discounts, Not Gift CardsA few days ago we reported that Apple would be introducing Black Friday deals via its online store and its retail outlets. Given that Apple products tend to lean more towards the pricey side of things, this is of course a welcome deal by many, even if it means that your savings could be $30-$50. Unfortunately unlike last year’s deals where Apple actually gave discounts on selected products, Apple has decided to give away gift cards this year, with the except of Apple Europe. Interestingly enough it seems that Apple’s Europe stores will be keeping to the tradition of giving discounts as you can see in the screenshot above from the Apple UK store.

We’re not sure why Apple Europe is the only exception, but for those living in the UK, you can expect to save anywhere between £11 to as much as £81 depending on which Apple product you’re planning on getting. This is compared to Apple’s Australia and New Zealand stores where gift cards worth up to $150 will be given away with purchase of selected products. While the US Black Friday deals for Apple has yet to go live, it is expected by many that Apple US will also be going the gift card route. What do you guys make of this? Seems a tad unfair, doesn’t it? Or would you prefer the gift card instead?
