James Holmes’ 1st Statements To Police Can Be Used In Court: Judge

DENVER — DENVER (AP) — Police officers who arrested James Holmes moments after the Colorado theater shootings will be allowed to tell jurors that when they asked Holmes if he had an accomplice, he replied, “No, it’s just me,” the judge ruled Friday.

The officers also say Holmes told them he had four guns and that he had left bombs in his apartment that would go off if wires were tripped.

Setup Local/Internal DNS with a DD-WRT Router

This article was written on May 25, 2011 by CyberNet.

I’ve talked about some features of the DD-WRT router before, and one of the things I’ve been playing around with lately is DNSMasq. There’s a good chance you haven’t noticed this setting in DD-WRT because it’s not something most people would ever think to use. Plus DNSMasq can be found in two different areas within DD-WRT since it can be used for both DHCP assignments as well as internal/local DNS management. What I will be focusing on is the local DNS aspect.

When is using DNSMasq useful for controlling DNS? Here are some examples as to why you may want to use it:

  • You have DNS pointing to something that is hosted on your home network and it is also accessible from outside your network. For example, you may have a security camera that has a domain attached to it (e.g. camera.example.com), and it’s accessed from both on and off your network. Using DNSMasq on your router you can make the domain, camera.example.com, point to the internal IP of the camera so that anyone who accesses that camera from within your network won’t have to rely on external DNS getting resolved. You should see at least a slight performance boost that way.
  • You want to override public DNS entries, such as google.com. You can obviously pull off some great pranks by directing traffic to sites like google.com or facebook.com to some custom site you create, but there are other reasons this is legitimately useful. Maybe you are testing a new version of your own website, but want to make sure it will work fine with the live domain. DNSMasq can help you accomplish that.
  • You want to create DNS for a site that is accessible using only a single word, such as intranet. Companies do this kind of thing all the time where an internal-only website can be reached without needing or wanting a publicly-accessible URL.

I know what you may be thinking… why wouldn’t you just update the HOSTS file on your local machine? Well, you could, but not all devices support that feature. By using DNSMasq the DNS change will work for anything connecting to your router, including mobile devices such as phones and tablets.

So what do you have to change in DD-WRT? Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to the Services tab once you’ve logged into the administration interface.
  2. Find the section labeled DNSMasq, and make sure the DNSMasq option is enabled.
  3. This is the fun part. In the Additional DNSMasq Options box type out your local DNS configurations in the format of one entry per line:
    • address=/machine_or_domain_name/ip_address – where machine_or_domain_name is what you want to create/change DNS for (e.g. camera.example.com, google.com, intranet) and ip_address is the new IP address you want it to point to.
  4. Apply the settings to DD-WRT, and you should be all set.

This is an example of what your DNSMasq settings may look like:

Ddwrt dnsmasq

If your devices don’t see the changes after they’ve been made you may need to try restarting them since that is often the simplest way to clear the DNS cache.

iPad Air tracking tool finds available models at local Apple Stores

Many have clamored to get their iPad Air today, and whilst you might not have too much trouble finding your preferred model at a nearby store, that process could become increasingly difficult as early buyers nab up available inventory. This isn’t a new problem, and one that spurred the creation of the iPhone 5s tracking […]

Attacks On Clean Energy Failed Across The Country: Report

WASHINGTON — Efforts to roll back renewable energy standards in the states this year have largely failed despite the best efforts of conservative groups, according to a new report.

At least 37 bills have been introduced in 2013 to eliminate or weaken states’ renewable portfolio standards (RPS), which set a minimum requirement for how much energy a state’s utilities must draw from renewable sources like solar and wind. The new report from ProgressNow and a coalition of national environmental and state-based progressive groups found that only one of those efforts has passed so far this year.

“They have almost no success,” said Brian Wietgrefe, national research director at ProgressNow. “It’s because it works — the policies work.”

Joe Arpaio To Fight Racial Profiling Monitor Ruling

PHOENIX, Nov 1 (Reuters) – Attorneys for hard-line Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio will appeal a judge’s ruling ordering the appointment of a monitor to ensure that his officers no longer use racial profiling, especially of Latinos, in their efforts to crack down on undocumented immigrants.

A federal judge in May ordered the Maricopa County sheriff to stop using race when making law enforcement decisions, in response to a lawsuit that tested whether police could target unauthorized immigrants without profiling U.S. citizens and legally resident Hispanics.

On Oct. 2, U.S. District Court Judge Murray Snow ordered parties in the case to agree on the selection of an independent monitor within 60 days to oversee the work of the 81-year-old lawman, who styles himself as “America’s toughest sheriff.” In addition, he mandated other steps be taken, including appointing a community advisory board.

Attorneys for Arpaio, a divisive figure in a bitter national debate over immigration who was elected to a sixth term as sheriff last year, lodged a notice to appeal the order with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit on Thursday.

The sheriff, who is facing a lawsuit and investigation from the U.S. Justice Department accusing him of civil rights abuses, vehemently denies that he or his officers profile Latinos.

Under a portion of a controversial Arizona immigration law that was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, police in the state may ask people they stop about their immigration status.

The monitor’s duties are to include reviewing the sheriff office’s policies and procedures, as well as making sure that its operations are carried out in a “race-neutral fashion,” although Arpaio stated the appointee would have no “veto authority” over his duties and operations.

The ruling last month also ordered audio and video recording of all traffic stops, increased training of sheriff’s office employees and the implementation of comprehensive record keeping.

It also requires the sheriff’s office to create a community advisory board to bolster its public outreach efforts, and mandates that deputies must tell dispatchers the reason for any traffic stops before approaching a vehicle. (Reporting by Tim Gaynor; Editing by Eric Walsh)

New Yorker cover takes Obamacare back to the tech past

Remedial treatment?

The constant hiccups will madden the sanest. In the end, though, America is being promised that HealthCare.gov will lead a healthy and happy life.

After all, once Google’s genetically engineered doctors get involved, you’re going to be fine.

Meanwhile, the bedside humor runs rampant. First, “Saturday Night Live” couldn’t help but suggest that the Obamacare site was built only to accommodate six people at a time. (Some documents indicate the number wasn’t entirely inaccurate.)
