John McCollister Dead: Former GOP Rep Dies At 92

Former Rep. John Y. McCollister (R-Neb.), a three-term U.S. congressman who helped launch Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s political career, died Thursday at age 92.

McCollister represented Nebraska’s 2nd District in the House of Representatives from 1971-77, hiring Hagel as an aide during that first year. McCollister had been suffering from cancer and died at an Omaha, Neb. hospice, the Associated Press reported.

“After 92 years, he’s had a good life, and we want to celebrate it,” his son, John S. McCollister, told the AP. “The great number of people he mentored is remarkable. He had so many close friends, and was very heartfelt in his political beliefs.”

Toronto Mayor’s Allies Call For Alleged Crack Video’s Release

TORONTO — TORONTO (AP) — Backers of embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford called Friday for police to release a video that appears to show him smoking a crack pipe, as outraged citizens of Canada’s largest city called for the mayor’s resignation.

Ford’s lawyer and the mayor’s brother, a city councilor, attacked Police Chief Bill Blair for talking publicly about the video, despite acknowledging it does not provide enough evidence to file charges against Ford. Police announced Thursday that they had recovered the video during a massive surveillance operation of an associate suspected of providing drugs to the mayor.

Hudway app delivers windshield HUD for driving

(Credit: Video screenshot by Michelle Starr/CNET Australia)

After Garmin released its $129.99 HUD gadget in July, it was only a matter of time before something similar landed for smartphones.

Hudway is a free iPhone app (coming for Android by February of next year) that reflects driving directions onto your windshield for low-visibility conditions.

It works off the back of Google Maps. You build a route on the map, which the app then preloads so it can be used offline — useful if connection is intermittent or you don’t want to use data. You then place your phone on your dashboard (we recommend securing it with some kind of mount or Blu-tack) and driving directions are displayed reflected off the glass.

Gunnar 3D Glasses might make 3D movies more tolerable

While 3D movies are a big deal, people are either in love with it, or hate it. For those of you that are fond of this type of viewing experience, there are a variety of different products ranging from cameras to televisions that have heavy emphasis on this aspect. For the cinematic world, you can’t just watch a 3D movie without sporting some silly looking glasses, but it’s always a game of chance finding a pair that isn’t scratched up or gross from being used by someone else.

If you’d prefer to bring in your own glasses and have a pair for home, then the Gunnar 3D Glasses might be up your alley. This is an extremely fancy pair of 3D glasses that are probably as top-notch as you’re going to get. They have adjustable nose pads so they can fit your face, an onyx frame, and were built to protect your eyes from drying out. It also has anti-reflective properties to reduce the amount of glare you have to deal with.

There are filters that will help you get nothing but 3D imagery without ghosting. While these do cost $40, they will only add to your experience and will hold up far better than what you might pick up at the theater. They are also slightly tweaked to make seeing through them crystal clear. Personally, these sorts of movies make me sick to my stomach.

Unlimited Vacation Policies Might Be Too Good To Be True

American workplaces aren’t always the best when it comes to encouraging their employees to take time off — and American workers, in turn, aren’t so great at taking their earned time off.

Only 77 percent of employers offer paid time off, with the average American worker receiving just two weeks of paid vacation per year (as compared to six weeks in France) and six days of company holidays. And according to a 2012 Hotwire survey, they’ll leave an average of nine vacation days unused each year. Plus, when employees do go on vacation, over 60 percent stay plugged in and continue responding to work emails during their time off.

As a radical response to the American “war on vacation” and in a bid to attract the best employees, more and more Silicon Valley tech companies are offering a slew of new and unusual perks, ranging from errand-running services to organic catered lunches to unlimited vacation time.
