Microsoft Surface 2 tablet hopes to make an impact

surface2When it comes to the world of tablets, Microsoft is definitely not one of the first names that you would think of. After all, the tablet market is currently dominated by a couple of names – Apple’s iOS as well as the Android mobile operating system from Google, whereas Microsoft has just entered the tablet arena recently. In terms of success, it really depends on which particular viewpoint you are looking from. The original Surface tablet did hold some promise at first, but it did not quite make the kind of impact as expected. Good to know that Microsoft is not a company that gives up easily. Take the Xbox for example – it basically was a no-show in Japan when it first released, but they have had moderate success with the Xbox 360 when it came out in that region. The Surface tablet situation can be somewhat attributed to a similar manner, where it did not sell that much at all, so it is not surprising to see that Microsoft has recently announced the Surface 2 tablet.

Enhancements have been made to Windows 8.1 RT which runs on the Microsoft Surface 2 tablet, making sure that it is even more powerful and customizable. If you have decided to pick up the Surface 2, then you will be pleased to hear that there are additonial goodies that have been thrown into the mix – where they include free Skype calling to landlines in over 60 countries for an entire year, unlimited Skype Wi-Fi at over 2 million hotspots worldwide for one year, in addition to 200GB of free SkyDrive storage that can last for a good two years.

The Surface 2 runs on an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, where it will also be accompanied by a 10.6-inch ClearType Full HD display which does 1080p video, featuring a full-size USB 3.0 port, a 3.5-megapixel camera in front, a 5-megapixel camera at the back, and coming in a slightly thinner and lighter form factor compared to its predecessor. The Surface 2 will arrive in 32GB and 64GB configurations, with prices starting from $449.

Tesla Model S: Now the No. 1 car of the (West Coast) wealthy

The choice of the conscious wealthy.

You know what a Porsche says about you? It says you don’t care.

You know what a Mercedes says about you? It says you believe that if the world ran out of gazelles, it would be just fine.

What drives me to such draconian extrapolations? A piece of fascinating analysis performed by Edmunds.com.

It attempted to discover whether the Tesla Model S was popular beyond the chest-beating, organic sackcloth-wearing confines of Silicon Valley.

Stunningly, the numbers show that in 8 of the top 25 most expensive ZIP codes in the US, the Tesla was the No. 1 registered vehicle of 2013. And it was No. 1 in more of the top 25 than any other vehicle.

Yes, America’s wealthy are rallying round to save the Earth. Or, at least, to buy the same rather attractive car.

Sony A7r and A7 First Impressions: Full-Frame Power, Palm-Sized Camera

A few weeks ago, Sony wowed photography nerds with something actually new: Two mirrorless, interchangeable-lens cameras with full-frame image sensors, the same big chips used in professional DSLRs. The compact design is a marvel on its own, and after using the cameras for a few days, I can safely say that, yes, these might be the most exciting shooters we’ve seen all year.

Stantt shirts try 3D body scans to find perfect fit

Matt Hornbuckle and Kirk Keel have had it with ill-fitting men’s shirts, and they’re taking matters into their own hands.

The co-founders of New Jersey-based e-commerce startup Stantt want long-sleeve button-ups to move past the limits of generic small, medium, and large sizes and into the realm of the customized perfect fit. So they’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign that promises to deliver casual shirts that “fit like they’re tailored for you.”

“You know that feeling of putting on your favorite suit? That empowered, I feel f’ing awesome feeling? We want you to feel that great every day in everything you wear, and the first step to that is an amazing fit,” reads the description for Stantt’s campaign.

From whence does that fit come? From technology.

Hornbuckle and Keel — former Johnson & Johnson consumer-brand managers who have no experience in fashion but clearly have experience with overly baggy shirts — worked with apparel and university experts to create a patent-pending sizing technology they call DataFit. Doing that involved mining 200 measurements from more than 800 3D body scans to yield some 70 sizes of men’s shirts. Wait,… [Read more]

Ubisoft Uplay Passport Is Dead: Online Gaming for All!

Like most gamers, I have a love-hate relationship with game publishers. I love that they bring cool games market for us to enjoy, but hate the often idiotic ways they try and prevent piracy and secondhand video game sales. One of the most irritating ways that game publishers like Ubisoft try to squeeze money out of gamers who purchase a used video game was by requiring them to purchase an online pass to play any multiple player aspect of the game.

These games come with an online code when purchased new, but that code is only good for one console. That means if you take the game to a friend’s house or give it away, the second owner can’t play it online without spending money. Ubisoft has now announced that its Uplay Passport online pass system is no more.

The game publisher has eliminated that online passport on all of its future games including the soon to launch Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag. That means these games will be playable online even if you buy them secondhand. I’m not a big supporter of secondhand video game sales mostly because for an extra few bucks, I’d rather buy new. I’ve sold use games to places like GameStop before so I know what little money they actually give you for the games to turn around and sell them at a very small discount compared to a brand-new version.

Ubisoft said, “The Uplay Passport program was initiated as a means of giving customers full access and support for online multiplayer and features, along with exclusive content, bonuses, and rewards,” Ubisoft said in a statement.

“However, games today are blurring the line between offline and online, between what is ‘single-player’ and what is ‘multiplayer,’” the statement continues. “Based on that and on the feedback we received from you, we recognized that Passport is no longer the best approach for ensuring that all our customers have the best possible experience with all facets of our games.”

I say good riddance to all such systems.
