Galaxy Nexus Will Not Receive Android 4.4 KitKat Update

Galaxy Nexus Will Not Receive Android 4.4 KitKat UpdateThe Galaxy Nexus was the third-generation in Google’s series of Nexus handsets and unfortunately for Galaxy Nexus users, if you were looking forward to Android 4.4 KitKat, you’d be out of luck as Android 4.3 Jelly Bean will be the latest version of Android that will ever be offered to your devices. This was confirmed by Google in a Galaxy Nexus FAQ in which it reads, “No, Galaxy Nexus phones won’t be receiving the update for Android 4.4 (KitKat).” Google goes on to explain the reason behind this move, claiming that the “Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices.”

This is probably pretty bad news for Galaxy Nexus owners who were planning on keeping their devices around a little long, but would have preferred if Google had allowed it to update to Android 4.4 KitKat instead. However this isn’t all bad news given Android’s pretty dedicated developer community where you might be able to find an Android 4.4 custom ROM, or at least a ROM that will bring some Android 4.4 KitKat features to your phone. What do Galaxy Nexus owners think? Is the 18-month window a valid reason? Or could it be hardware limitations that does not allow Google to update the device to Android 4.4?

HTC One Units In North America To Receive Android 4.4 KitKat Within 90 Days

HTC One Units In North America To Receive Android 4.4 KitKat Within 90 DaysOne of the downsides to Android devices is that when an update is announced by Google, it usually is a mystery as to whether manufacturer will make an update available for their products. Not to mention there are times when an update has to receive carrier approval first, meaning that there is an additional level of delay from the update’s announcement to its actual deployment. Well the good news for HTC One users is that if you’re looking forward to the recently announced Android 4.4 KitKat, you can expect the update to make its way onto your device within a 90-day time frame.

This was announced by Jason Mackenzie, the President of HTC America who confirmed in an interview with Engadget that the update will be pushed out as quickly as possible. HTC One Play Edition handsets can look forward to the update within the next 15 days, while the Developer and Unlocked editions of the handset can expect it in 30 days. The rest of the HTC One handsets in the US, along with carrier versions, can look forward to the Android 4.4 KitKat update in 90 days. It should be noted that Mackenzie speaks on behalf of HTC’s North American operations, so there’s no telling if HTC One units around the world can expect the same treatment, but we reckon it’s still pretty good news nonetheless.

    Huawei Ascend W2 Unveiled

Huawei Ascend W2 UnveiledWe have been hearing about the Huawei Ascend W2 for a while now, and the good news for Windows Phone users is that if you’re looking for a Nokia, HTC, or Samsung alternative for your Windows Phone needs, Huawei has officially unveiled the Ascend W2. Available in a variety of different colors, ranging from black, yellow, red, and blue, the Ascend W2 will come with Windows Phone 8 preinstalled and while it might not necessarily be the most powerful Windows Phone handset around, it should be more than capable of getting the job done.

The Huawei Ascend W2 will feature a 4.3” IPS WVGA LCD display and what Huawei calls TFT Magic Touch technology. This basically means that users will be able to interact with the device even when wearing loves. The handset will also be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage, and while the camera specifications were not mentioned, Huawei did state that it would be capable of 720p HD video capture. No word on pricing or availability, but given its specs, we expect the Huawei Ascend W2 will not be breaking the bank.

iFixit’s iPad Air Teardown Reveals Tightly Packed Innards Dominated By A Big Battery

    ipad-air-ifixit

Apple’s iPad Air goes on sale today – it’s easily the best iPad Apple’s put out so far, but we’re waiting with bated breath for the iPad mini with Retina display. Until then, however, the Air is also the most remarkable feat of engineering in any tablet device in terms of what goes on under the hood, or at least that’s what it looks like based on iFixit’s traditional day one teardown of the brand new device.

As it does with every new Apple product release, iFixit has managed to get its hands on one of the first shipping units available anywhere in the world, and they’ve immediately broken it open to see what makes it tick. In short, what makes it tick is a battery. It’s a huge one, and it takes up most of the space within the case – but it’s also actually still smaller than the battery of the iPad 4th generation, despite the fact that it’s a much more powerful machine.

This battery has only two cells, and is rated at 32.9 WHr capacity, while the last iPad held a three cell, 43 WHr unit. The new slimmed down lithium ion power source is supplying energy to the same screen as on the iPad it replaces, which is a 9.7-inch display. That means the increased battery efficiency is coming from somewhere else; it also probably means decreased component costs for Apple.

Other highlights from the teardown include a look at the A7 chip (which is actually a slightly different version to the one in the iPhone 5s), confirmation that it does have 1GB of RAM, and the RF components that include a Qualcomm LTE processor with 1GB of dedicated RAM itself, which helps account for the iPad Air’s magical range of LTE band connectivity.

iFixit concludes by saying that the iPad Air achieves a repairability score of just 2 out of 10, which is in line with the repairability score of Apple tablets in general. If you’re looking for something modular, however, you’re probably not looking for an extremely thin and light tablet that’s as portable as possible while still boasting impressive display and battery life. I’d never pop the case on one of these myself, but it’s definitely fun to take a peek inside courtesy of someone who’s brave enough to attempt it.

iPad Air Teardown: Glorious Guts, But So Much Glue

We know it’s light, fast and beautiful already, but we still haven’t seen inside Apple’s new iPad Air. Fortunately, iFixit has had the good grace to rip the thing apart.
