Motorola To Update DROID Mini, Ultra, Maxx, And Moto X With Android 4.4 KitKat

Motorola To Update DROID Mini, Ultra, Maxx, And Moto X With Android 4.4 KitKatGood news Motorola users! According to a recent post by Punit Soni, it has been revealed that Motorola will be updating some of its smartphones to Android 4.4 and have named devices like the Motorola DROID Mini, DROID Maxx, DROID Ultra, and the Moto X. Unfortunately the availability of the update remains unknown at this point in time, but we guess it’s still pretty awesome news for owners of the abovementioned devices, although we’re not sure if one would rather be in the dark about possible updates or spend the next few months waiting for it? What do you guys think?

Android 4.4 KitKat is the latest version of Android that was originally announced by Google a couple of months ago. Unsurprisingly the update will make its way onto the Google Nexus 5 first along with other Nexus devices, the advantage of owning a Nexus handset we suppose, and given that Motorola is owned by Google, hopefully it won’t take too long before owners of the devices mentioned above will get their update. We’re not sure if other Motorola smartphones will be included in the mix as well, but for now those are the only handsets mentioned but check back with us in the future for additional updates!

Nintendo Halts SpotPass Feature Due To Offensive Material Being Shared

Nintendo Halts SpotPass Feature Due To Offensive Material Being SharedWhen there are apps and programs that allow people to share photos, well safe to say that there will be some abusing the system by sending sometimes inappropriate pictures. Nintendo has been experiencing that with their Nintendo 3DS online service, SwapNote. The service was originally designed to allow 3DS users to share handwritten notes and drawings with one another, as well as the ability to share photos as well. Unfortunately it seems that many have abused the service to send “offensive material”, which is why Nintendo has announced that they will be shutting the service down effective immediately. Granted that “offensive material” has been shared way before SwapNote, we’re guessing the involvement of minors is probably what Nintendo took offense to.

According to the statement released by Nintendo, “Nintendo has learned that some consumers, including minors, have been exchanging their friend codes on Internet bulletin boards and then using Swapnote (known as Nintendo Letter Box in other regions) to exchange offensive material. Nintendo has been investigating ways of preventing this and determined it is best to stop the SpotPass feature of Swapnote because it allows direct exchange of photos and was actively misused.” We’re not sure if the service will come back once Nintendo figures a way to prevent offensive material from being shared, but until then it looks like you’d be out of luck.

Jimmy Kimmel Tricks Passersby With Fake Scentee, Hilarity Ensues

In the past, television talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel has taken the mickey out on the public by making them think that Product A is actually Product B, like how they tricked people into thinking the iPad mini was the new iPhone. Well it looks like he’s back with a new episode of Lie Witness News and this time he tries to convince people of a certain iPhone accessory called the “Scentee”. This is an accessory released only in Japan that basically allows a scent to be emitted from your phone when you receive a new message.

Like we said since the Scentee is only available in Japan, Jimmy Kimmel did what he has done in Lie Witness News and lied to people on the streets claiming that the plastic device attached to the phone is the Scentee, with hilarious reactions and responses ensuing. If you have a few minutes to spare and want a quick chuckle to start/end your Friday, be sure to check it out in the video above.

Tech Consortium Sues Google And Other Tech Companies For Alleged Patent Infringement

Tech Consortium Sues Google And Other Tech Companies For Alleged Patent Infringement

The patent wars between tech giants has been heating up over the years, with companies using patents and legal victories as a means to block the sale of devices by their competitors. So far the biggest one we’ve seen is Apple versus Samsung, but it looks like that war will pale in comparison to the upcoming one where a consortium has filed a lawsuit against Google, ASUS, HTC, Huawei, LG, Pantech, Samsung, and ZTE, claiming that they have infringed upon patents owned by them. The consortium is none other than Rockstar which is owned jointly by the likes of Apple, BlackBerry, Ericsson, Microsoft, and Sony. The consortium owns thousands of patents which were bought when Nortel filed for bankruptcy, so safe to say they have a lot of weapons in their combined arsenal.

According to the lawsuit, Rockstar claims Google infringed upon seven of Nortel’s patents, while other companies, such as Samsung, HTC, and LG, were accused to infringing upon seven patents related to graphical user interfaces, messaging, notifications, and other mobile-related functions. According to Rockstar’s CEO, John Vesci (via Wired), “Pretty much anybody out there is infringing […] It would be hard for me to envision that there are high-tech companies out there that don’t use some of the patents in our portfolio.” While other companies listed as having infringed upon the patents have yet to respond, a Google spokesperson was quoted as saying, “While we haven’t yet been served with this complaint, we continue to advocate for patent reform that would address the current flood of patent litigation.”

Google Chrome To Start Automatically Blocking Malware

Google Chrome To Start Automatically Blocking MalwareFor the not-so tech savvy, having malware install itself on your computer can happen, especially when you think links and attachments in emails are generally safe, or you accidentally click on links on websites that will eventually install malware on your computer. Well the good news is that if you use Google Chrome, Google will be trying their very best to block malware from installing itself on your computer on your behalf. This is thanks to the introduction of a new security feature that has made its way into the Chrome Canary release, meaning it has yet to be rolled out to the masses just yet, but it should in the future.

This malware blocker that has been built into Chrome will be able to detect threats and will automatically block these downloads, giving you a notification informing you that a malicious download was recently block, allowing you to dismiss the message afterwards. According to Google, “This is in addition to the 10,000 new websites we flag per day with Safe Browsing, which is used by Chrome and other browsers to keep more than 1 billion web users safe. Keeping you secure is a top priority, which is why we’re working on additional means to stop malicious software installs as well.” This definitely sounds like an update worth looking forward to.

Canon Announcement Rumored For 10th November

Canon Announcement Rumored For 10th NovemberAccording to a rumor we heard back in September, an announcement for a new Canon EOS M camera was coming soon, but so far we haven’t heard anything, at least until a new rumor from Canon Rumors that claims that an event will be held by a major retailer on the 10th of November. According to the report, when asked about whether there will be new Canon products, the retailer couldn’t share anything other than the fact that Canon folks will definitely be interested, but apart from that not much else is known.

It is not uncommon for major retailers to get the low-down on upcoming products, and they are usually bound by NDA to prevent information from being leaked ahead of schedule, so with them not actually denying that there will be new Canon products is definitely worth taking note of. Canon Rumors claim that there should not be any new EOS DSLR cameras for the remainder of 2013, suggesting that perhaps the EOS M successor’s announcement is one we can look forward to. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but check back with us in the near future for the updates.

The Moon May Have Been Made of 'Magma Mush' For Millions of Years

We’re used to thinking of the moon as a cold and unassuming lump of rock—but new research suggests that it could have been made of a strange magma mush for hundreds of millions of years before it solidified into the object we now see every night.
