Beginning today, you can now waterproof — or, at the very least, water-resist — your Jambox wireless speakers when you order through the Jawbone website. The treatment option comes by way of a Jawbone partnership with Liquipel, the company responsible for the microscopically thin coating of liquid repellant found in some of today’s high-tech devices. We’re sure you guys have heard of the Lytro camera which for those unfamiliar, is a rather unique camera in the sense that you could shoot your photos first and focus on specific portions of the photo later. This allowed photographers to capture images in the moment without having to worry about fiddling with focus and finding that sweet spot. Such a camera would be interesting especially if brought to mobile devices, especially when mobile devices are used heavily in taking photos these days since we have them on us all the time.
Well it looks like Apple could be interested in something similar as the Cupertino company has recently filed for a patent for a plenoptic camera, which is essentially similar technology found inside the Lytro camera. According to the patent, Apple’s take will include an adapter holding a microlens array used to take low resolution refocusable images, where users will be able to choose their point of focus in the software later.
While it remains to see if this technology ever makes its way into future Apple products, it is not completely out of the question as Lytro’s founder, Ren Ng, revealed that Apple’s late co-founder, Steve Jobs, had called him over to discuss what both companies could do together. Apart from Apple, we have also heard the rumors that Nokia might be interested in something similar which could debut in their 2014 smartphones, and that Toshiba has developed a similar type of sensor as well. Exciting times are definitely ahead of us!

Tablets are gaining a lot of popularity largely due to its size, its price, and how sometimes its battery life can even outlast that of a laptop. While it remains to see if tablets can truly ever replace a laptop, like we said they are undoubtedly gaining in popularity and according to analyst firm, Canalys, they predict that tablets will account for 50% of the total client PC market in 2014, and are expected to out-ship a lot of other PC form factors combined. This is based on Canalys’ observation of how the desktop and notebook shipments have experienced an overall decline, despite the worldwide PC market experiencing an 18% growth in Q3 2013.
Their predictions state that they believe Apple will continue to do well, and will remain “highly profitable and driving revenue from its entire ecosystem is of greater importance than market share statistics.” As for Android, their report claims that Samsung will continue to lead the pack, although they are expected to face competition from other manufacturers as more companies attempt to enter the tablet market. What do you guys reckon? 50% is basically saying that one out of two people you know will have a tablet. Will tablets really account for 50% of the PC market come 2014?

Heads up would-be tablet owners, if you were planning on getting yourself a brand new tablet, why not the new Nexus 7 from Google? Granted there are plenty of other options out there, such as the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX, but according to a recent tweet from Google, it seems that Google will be giving out $25 credit towards the Google Play store with every brand new Nexus 7 purchase. According to Google, this offer is starting from today and will only be available to those living in the US and Canada, so those living overseas would be out of luck.
Like Google said, this offer is for a limited period of time, so you might want to hurry before the offer ends. No word on when Google will be putting an end to this offer, but like they said this is for the holiday season so we wouldn’t expect it to last too long. The Nexus 7 is Google’s latest tablet offering for 2013 and will sport a 7” 1920×1200 IPS display, giving it a pretty impressive pixel density of 323ppi. It will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro clocked at 1.5GHz and will feature Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. It will sport the usual connectivity options, and LTE is one of them albeit optional (different models).

When Motorola first announced the Moto X, one of the coolest customizable options we saw was how customers could potentially choose a wooden backplate for the handset, which is definitely different and more unique from your typical color options. Unfortunately until today, no word on when the wooden backplate option will make its way into the Moto Maker site, but last we heard it was tipped for a Q4 2013 release. Well the good news is that if you were looking forward to a wooden-backed Moto X, a tweet by reporter for Reuters has revealed that the wooden option will be coming in time for holiday shoppers.
The tweet also mentioned that this means that the option will be skipping Thanksgiving, but we suppose better late than never, right? Interestingly enough another color option was found on the Motorola website, thanks to the digging done by the folks at Droid-Life who discovered that a gold finish was a possibility as well. It is unclear if this will be a complete body color option, or if it will only be limited to button accents, but either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled. What do you guys think? Who else is looking forward to a Moto X handset with a wooden backplate?
