A Look at Microsoft’s WorldWide Telescope

This article was written on May 13, 2008 by CyberNet.

A lot of hype has surrounded Microsoft’s WorldWide Telescope right from the start, especially after we learned that it made Robert Scoble cry. Back in February he took a trip to Microsoft and saw it in action. He was under embargo and couldn’t explain what it was that he saw, but he did say that it was life changing and it was something that had an emotional impact on him. A couple of weeks later when we learned that the WorldWide Telescope was in fact what Scoble was referring to, the pressure was on for Microsoft to deliver. Late last night they did deliver and the WorldWide Telescope has been released into it’s “Spring Beta” and is available for download here.

My very first impression when I started it after installing it was that in some ways, the interface reminds me of Windows Media Player with the drop-down menus at the top. The next thing I noticed was just how complex it is, in a good way. There is so much information available, it’s unbelievable and there are many, many features.

worldwide telescope.png

The best way to get a hang of everything is to just start exploring. Click on the different drop-down menus to see what kinds of things you can click on and just have fun. I haven’t spent more than 20 minutes playing around with everything, but in that time I saw a lot of really amazing images. You can choose which telescopes you’d like to look through, and you can even switch between different light wavelengths. There are also guided tours available, complete with narration.

In the official press release from Microsoft, they quote Bill Gates saying:

“The WorldWide Telescope is a powerful tool for science and education that makes it possible for everyone to explore the universe.

By combining terabytes of incredible imagery and data with easy-to-use software for viewing and moving through all that information, the WorldWide Telescope opens the door to new ways to see and experience the wonders of space. Our hope is that it will inspire young people to explore astronomy and science, and help researchers in their quest to better understand the universe.”

I don’t know about you, but I would have loved to have tools like the WorldWide Telescope and Google Sky available while I was in school to learn about the universe. For both kids and adults alike, these tools provide us with a great opportunity to see what’s out there.

Check out Microsoft’s WorldWide Telescope… (just note that the download is Windows only)

Thanks for the tip Change and Silviu!

3D Printed Thorn Dice: For Literal Critical Hits

So, standard dice aren’t doing it for you. There are a ton of special dice sets that you can buy to spice things up a bit. Although I think these are the first I’ve ever seen with thorns sticking out of them. Roll your dice, move your mice. Just make sure you play with a paper towel, some gauze and some antiseptic. Things are about to get real in this game. Real painful.

This set of 3D printed thorn dice was designed by Shapeways contributor ceramicwombat. You can get plastic versions for as low as $27(USD), but that set isn’t dangerous enough for a true gamer. You are going to want the $82 metal set so you can play like a man. A man with bleeding hands. Just kidding. They shouldn’t cut you up too bad. I think.

Plus, these die are an excellent way to get revenge on your kids for leaving LEGO bricks on the floor for you to step on. Oh, sorry son, I guess I left MY toys on the floor this time. The Band-Aids are over here. Now stop crying.

LG Canada says G2 will get Android 4.4 KitKat by March

LG G2

LG G2 owners may have to wait a while to get the Android 4.4 KitKat software that their Nexus 5-toting counterparts already enjoy. A spokesperson for the company’s Canadian branch informs MobileSyrup that the G2 should get its KitKat upgrade late in the first quarter of 2014 — in other words, March. While that will disappoint early adopters, LG does note that every local carrier will receive the update at about the same time. Whether or not Americans will see the new OS any sooner is another matter. We’ve asked the company about its US upgrade schedule, and we’ll let you know if it can provide some details.

The Floating Cap – and we all float on

Floating Cap
Not everyone learned how to swim when they were little. There’s nothing shameful or wrong about that, but it can be annoying as an adult to be scared of not being able to keep your head above water. While you don’t want to don the inflatable floaties, there may be a way to keep your dignity, and not drown.

The Floating Cap is a combination of Neoprene, polyurethane foam, and Lycra that is intended to make sure your head stays above the water’s surface. While this is actually meant for those who enjoy going to a hot spring in Iceland, it doesn’t mean that’s the only place you can use it. This would be perfect for floating along in a swimming pool or hot tub at home or in your local area. Thanks to their material make-up, they will look more like water weights and a swim cap rather than floaties.

Another plus side to this is the noise-cancelling quality they would have. You could go to a public pool, and not be as annoyed by the myriad of screaming children around you. Doesn’t mean they won’t crash into you or splash you on occasion, but it’s a small step. The medium cap in either black or blue will cost you around $110. This is a pretty hefty price for just a swim cap, but is small in comparison to drowning because of pride. Those who want the leg or arm bands will have to chuck an extra $65 at the checkout price.

PlayStation 4 and PS Vita bundle now available in the UK, but it’s no bargain

PS4 and PS Vita bundle for the UK

Remember that rumored PlayStation 4 and PS Vita bundle that was due to reach the UK in time for the holidays? It’s now official — if not the discount that some were hoping for. Sony UK head Fergal Gara tells Eurogamer that some stores are carrying the device combo starting today, but it will cost only slightly less than the £500 ($816) you’d pay to get the systems one at a time. Appropriately, a few shops will offer a “soft bundle” that involves regular PS4 and Vita boxes. The kit doesn’t make much financial sense, then, but Gara describes this as a philosophical move that highlights the PS4’s Remote Play feature. To us, the real problem will be supply; when the PS4 is flying off shelves, there may not be many bundles to sell in the first place.

New Lenovo Laptop The Tablet PC Of The Future?

This article was written on December 23, 2005 by CyberNet.

New Lenovo Laptop

People are always asking where computers are going to be in the future, well, this looks like a good candidate for one of them. Not only does it allow you to adjust the laptop in various ways, but it also lets you remove the keyboard from the computer and use it externally from the computer! Wow! To help make it a little more formal, it is also bound in leather for a more executive look. Of course, what would be a good laptop nowadays if it didn’t have the Tablet PC functionality? This will be able to serve every purpose from writing down your class notes all the way to being a ‘desktop’ computer.

Ohio State-Michigan Rivalry Has Governor John Kasich Asking Ohioans Not To Use ‘M’ Word

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Gov. John Kasich wants Ohioans to avoid using the dreaded letter “M” on Saturday when No. 3 Ohio State faces archrival Michigan.

Kasich declared the game day as “Scarlet Letter Saturday” in honor of Ohio State’s rivalry game with the Wolverines. Ohio fans have often found other words to refer to Michigan, calling the school “That Team Up North” among other epithets and singing songs about their utter disregard for the state.

Lately, Buckeyes fans on Twitter have taken to dropping the letter M from their tweets, even from their own names.
