ATM Hack Uses USB Drives To Steal Money

ATM Hack Uses USB Drives To Steal MoneyWe have all seen the warnings on ATMs in which banks advise their customers to avoid using the machine if it looks like it might have been tampered with. After all with 3D printers creating ATM skimmers with relative ease, anyone not aware could be easily fooled and could lose their life savings in one fell swoop. Now it seems that instead of relying on ATM skimmers, hackers have managed to use USB drives in order to steal from unknowing customers. This is done by thieves cutting a hole into ATMs that allows them to plug in a USB drive that then installs code into the ATMs which then allows them to steal from it.

This was discovered when a lender discovered its ATMs were being emptied out despite the use of safes to help protect the cash inside. The findings of this hack was presented at the Chaos Computing Congress, although its presenters asked not to have their names published. As it stands this hack appears to be limited to European banks but there’s no telling if the hack has managed to make its way stateside or to other banks around the world. Interestingly enough the researchers have indicated that there might no be honor among thieves because in order to release the money, separate codes had to be used, discouraging thieves from the gang to go solo or rip one another off.

Project Overwatch Is Hoping To Take Paintball To The Next Level

Paintball is a pretty straightforward game in which you scout out your opponents and shoot them with your paintball gun. You hit your target, they’re out and you win, simple as that. However it seems that one particular startup company has decided that even a classic game of paintball needs upgrading in the technology front and are looking to bring Call of Duty-like technology into the game. As you guys know, Call of Duty is a video game but it does sport features such as maps that lets you know where you are, where your team mates are, and etc. That’s one of the features that Innovis Labs is hoping to bring to the paintball arena with their Indiegogo project for a piece of technology called Project Overwatch.

By attaching their smartphone to their paintball guns, it will allow players to track realtime movements of players on the map. The company’s CEO, a certain 17-year old Josh Moody, believes that with Project Overwatch, it will allow the bridging of the gap between real world and digital world gaming. Apart from just mapping out player locations, Project Overwatch will also allow gamers to communicate with each other via voice chat, and will also come with features that allows gamers to jam the radar of the opposing team. It will also allow “commanders” to coordinate attacks from a remote location, such as from the sidelines or even at home lying on the couch.

It is a pretty amazing idea and could take paintball games to new heights, but as to whether it’s worth fixing what ain’t broke remains to be seen. As it stands the project is seeking funding via Indiegogo and has managed to raise almost $4,000 out of its $50,000 goal at this time of writing, so if you’d like to learn more or pledge a donation, hit up its Indiegogo page for the details.

Netflix Testing New Subscription Service At $6.99 A Month

Netflix Testing New Subscription Service At $6.99 A MonthAt the moment Netflix’s basic subscription is set at $7.99 that allows you to watch programs from its service on two screens, either in high definition or standard definition. $7.99 is admittedly not much to pay but at the same time we suppose for some individuals or families, it is considered to be a luxury. Well the good news is that Netflix is looking to offer even cheaper subscription fees at $6.99, a good $1 cheaper than its current offering but the only difference is that instead of allowing high definition viewing, the new offering will only allow viewers to enjoy their shows in standard definition.

For those who don’t own high definition televisions or really can’t be fussed about those sorts of things, we suppose saving a dollar ain’t too bad. As it stands, Netflix stated that this new service is currently in testing and will only be offered to select customers for now before the company plans on making it available to a wider audience. According to The Verge, they claim that this subscription plan can be found after signing up for one month of free streaming, after which the option will be made available to you. What do you guys think of this newer and cheaper service from Netflix? Is the price difference between $7.99 and $6.99 going to help make customers hop on board the Netflix bandwagon if they haven’t joined already?

Huawei Ascend Mate 2 Photos Leaked

Huawei Ascend Mate 2 Photos LeakedEarlier this year, Huawei announced the Ascend Mate smartphone which is why it does not come as a complete surprise to think that Huawei might be looking to introduce a successor in the form of the Ascend Mate 2, which we have seen in leaked photos and certifications. In any case there is a good chance that Huawei could take advantage of CES 2014 to announce the successor of the Ascend Mate but until then, newly leaked photos of the handset has since made its way online, giving us a better glimpse at the device prior to its officially unveiling. The photos (courtesy of Engadget) shows off various angles of the handset which we have to say doesn’t look particularly flashy, but we guess it should get the job done.

As far as specs are concerned, we have only heard the rumors, but if they are to be believed, the device is rumored to sport a 6.1” display and oddly enough will keep its 1280x720p HD resolution, as opposed to upgrading it to Full HD which seems to be the standard these days. Pretty odd given that 2K phones are starting to make their appearance but we guess this is one way to keep costs down. Other rumored specs include a 1.6GHz quad-core processor of Huawei’s own make, 2GB of RAM, a 13MP rear-facing camera, and a 5MP front-facing camera, with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean running the phone.

We expect Huawei will announce the device in its official capacity at CES 2014, so be sure to check back with us then for the details. In the meantime you can check out our review of the original Ascend Mate to get an idea of what to expect.

Researchers Discover Vulnerability In Flash-Based Storage

Researchers Discover Vulnerability In Flash Based StorageIf you own a smartphone or a tablet that allows you to expand its storage via microSD cards, you might be interested to learn that it seems that your microSD card might not be as secure as you might think. Presenting their findings at the Chaos Computer Congress, Andrew Huang and Sean Cross have detailed their findings in which they discovered that microSD cards and other flash-based storage were prone to hacks and could be used by hackers for malicious purposes if they found out about its vulnerability.

The idea behind the vulnerability is through errors in the flash-based storage itself. Manufacturers have sophisticated software that can detect hardware issues, such as bad sectors, and correct them through firmware. Unfortunately the firmware themselves aren’t bug free, and it is through these buggy firmware that hackers are able to take advantage of the vulnerability and hack into these flash-based storage devices, allowing them to install malware and deliver man in the middle attacks. Unfortunately it seems that cards that have been compromised are not detectable by custom security protocols and the only way to deal with a compromised card would be to physically destroy it.

On top of that, it has been found that devices such as USB flash drives and even SSDs are prone to these vulnerabilities as well. The good news is that manufacturers who are aware of these flaws in their products can release updates to fix it, although we guess it’s not often that we see messages on our phones or computers asking us to update our SSDs or microSD cards, right?

Photo Realistic Painting Of Santa Claus Done On Microsoft Paint

A while back we reported on an ultra realistic painting of Morgan Freeman that was done with an iPad app. In fact it was so real that many of you guys were convinced it was a hoax. Well if you still don’t believe that an iPad app could have done that, perhaps you might be even more blown away by this time lapse video in which it shows how an extremely photo realistic painting of Santa Claus was done entirely on Microsoft Paint! Yes, the same Paint software that is used to make stick figures, doodles, and otherwise “bad” pieces of art, has managed to create a masterpiece. Of course this did not happen overnight. In fact the video has been condensed from a little over 50 hours worth of footage because that’s how long it took to make it happen.

Is this entirely possible? Well I’m no artist myself so I can’t speak for technique, but software such as Paint, Photoshop, and other image editing programs are tools to help transfer ideas from the artist’s mind onto canvas. Well, a digital canvas anyway, so if an artist was familiar enough with the concept of shading, lines, and knew enough to manipulate a program, we don’t see why this image could not be the result of such an effort. In any case if you have a few minutes to spare, this is definitely a video worth checking out and one worthy to end 2013 with. What do you guys think?
