Samsung Unveils First Tizen Devices In February

Samsung Unveils First Tizen Devices In February

There has been a lot of speculation this year about Samsung’s Tizen devices. The company has already termed the OS it has built in collaboration with Intel as a “simple alternative” to Android, but so far no glimpse of its Tizen powered smartphone has been seen. It was previously rumored that perhaps Samsung might show something at the MWC 2014 in Barcelona, and it certainly intends to. Invitations have been sent out for an event in Barcelona on February 23rd, just one day before the Mobile World Congress 2014 kicks off.

The invite reads that event attendees will be offered an “exclusive sneak preview of the newest Tizen devices,” and that both companies will talk about the major milestones the OS has achieved since last year’s event. Analysts believe that Samsung is under increasing pressure to show off Tizen to the world, given the fact that a number of other nascent mobile platforms have already started making their way into the market, Jolla and Firefox OS are prime examples. It was rumored that Samsung’s first Tizen powered smartphone will be released in 2013, but apparently the company’s co-CEO pushed the release back because they wanted to further enhance and improve Tizen. Apart from smartphones, Samsung is also due to unveil Tizen powered smart TVs and refrigerators.

Gaia Out To Map Space With Its Billion Pixel Camera

Gaia Out To Map Space With Its Billion Pixel CameraSo, you are pretty happy with your high end smartphone that captures some pretty interesting photos with clarity on the move, or you are a professional photographer who cannot get enough of your Canon 5D Mark III, but neither one of them are able to hold a candle to the European Space Agency’s recently launched Gaia satellite. The Gaia satellite is on a mission to map the galaxy while capturing beautiful photographs of it, and will do so with an unprecedented level of detail and accuracy. We are talking about a billion pixel camera here, allowing its lens to be able to “see” a star that is far flung away, offering an error margin of seven micro-arcseconds – which is the equivalent to measuring a person’s thumbnail on the moon all the way from terra firma.

First of all, the Gaia satellite will need to complete the gruelling 1.5 million kilometer journey away from earth before it will kick off is 5 year long mission to capture far away galaxies in its splendor and beauty. It is capable of making accurate measurements of the positions and motions of 1% of the total population of roughly 100 billion stars, and will hope to offer answers to all time favorite questions concerning the beginning as well as evolution of the galaxy. Good luck, Gaia! [Press Release]

CyanogenMod Case For Nexus 5 Launched

CyanogenMod Case For Nexus 5 LaunchedThe folks over at CyanogenMod do a whole lot more than just rolling out custom operating system ROM versions for the masses, as well as working on a new smartphone that they can call their own. No sir, it seems that something apart from them has hit the market, and we are talking about the CyanogenMod case for the Nexus 5. This particular case was specially built in conjunction with CruzerLite, where it will feature CyanogenMod’s very own “cid” logo on the back, making it a fantastic method for those who support one of the most revered custom ROMs for the Android platform.

This particular CyanogenMod for Nexus 5 case has been specially designed by a CyanogenMod community member, known as Asher Simonds, who also happens to be the one behind the Nexus Experience pattern wallpapers in CyanogenMod. It will cost you $14.90 a pop, where you can choose from the following colors – black, smoke, clear and teal colors. CyanogenMod has not yet mentioned whether this happens to be a one off case, or will it be one that targets other Nexus devices some time down the road. I suppose the eventual popularity of the case would be a pretty good indicator as to whether to pursue this road or not.

Galaxy Gear Update Improves Battery Life And Notifications

Galaxy Gear Update Improves Battery Life And Notifications

Samsung’s smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, didn’t exactly prove to be a hit this year but that doesn’t mean that the company will drop support for it just yet. Two of the biggest issues that were voiced after its release were the dismal battery life and the inability to display notifications from all applications. Samsung addressed both issues through a software update earlier this month, the update has finally been released in the U.S. Build V700XXUAMK7 for Galaxy Gear improves battery life as well as the notifications.

Apart from that, the latest Galaxy Gear update also improves range, connection and the overall performance. It also features a faster S Voice. The enhanced battery life would no doubt be well received, users will also be stoked about finally being able to receive notifications from all built-in as well as third-party applications on their smartwatch. With support for the Galaxy Gear slowly being added to a variety of Samsung devices, its about time that these issues were addressed so that potential customers wouldn’t hesitate in making a decision about picking one up. The update is being rolled out over the air, so Galaxy Gear owners in the U.S. should receive a notification shortly if they haven’t already. Alternatively, the smartwatch may also be updated through the Samsung Kies software.

MyGlass iOS App Available Once Again

MyGlass iOS App Available Once Again

Earlier this week the MyGlass iOS app for Google Glass appeared online. It was available for download only for a short while before Google pulled it, promising that it would be released later in the week. A couple of days after that little incident, Google rolled out the XE12 software update for Google Glass, which not only brought a number of new features such as YouTube uploads and ability to take pictures by winking, it also brought support for this app. With the update having been rolled out, the MyGlass iOS app has finally been released once again on the App Store.

Google Glass is in the hands of a select few thousand “Explorers,” the company is expected to release the wearable device to the public next year. This app is vital for all Google Glass owners who prefer using an iOS device instead of an Android one, through the app they can add new Glassware applications, get directions, manage contacts, screencast what they see on the Glass’s prism onto the display of their iOS device and tweak a number of other settings. There’s feature parity with the Android MyGlass app, though that has been around for quite some time now, the iOS app is just getting to the party. MyGlass iOS app is free for download from the App Store, but you must have Google Glass otherwise there’s no use to get this app.
