For those who like the Samsung Galaxy S4’s hardware but wanted a more stock experience and timely updates, the Google Play Edition was probably the ideal choice and unsurprisingly so, especially given that the handset has recently received its Android 4.4.2 KitKat update. Well the good news is that if you own the regular Samsung Galaxy S4 or the Galaxy Note 3 and you’re wondering when your KitKat update would arrive, perhaps a release sometime in January 2014 could be a possibility.
This timeframe is according to French carrier, SFR, who states that the Android 4.4 KitKat update for both the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3 are scheduled to arrive towards the end of January 2014. This coincides with a schedule that was leaked not too long ago although we’re not sure if the release of the update will only be for Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 units in France, or if they were speaking in general. Best case scenario would be the latter, although we should note that over in the US, carriers require OEMs to seed the updates to them for approval first before it is released to the masses, so even if this was true, those tied to US carriers might have to wait a tad longer.
Either way we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for more information regarding the availability of Android 4.4 KitKat for the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, so be sure to check back with us later for updates!

A couple of years ago, AT&T failed to acquire T-Mobile not because T-Mobile did not want to play ball, but rather because there were too many opposing the merger due to worries about AT&T and T-Mobile monopolizing the market. However according to recent reports, it seems that Sprint could be thinking about acquiring the carrier themselves, which some have speculated to be a mere trial balloon as opposed to a concrete offering, and now according to Reuters, they are claiming that Dish could be interested in getting their hands on T-Mobile as well.
It seems that Dish’s failure to beat out Softbank to acquire Sprint has resulted in the company eyeing T-Mobile as a viable alternative, and have apparently spoken to T-Mobile’s parent company, Deutsche Telekom, about it. While Dish is still deciding on whether they should place a bid on T-Mobile, sources of Reuters claim that if Sprint were to make a move, Dish would definitely not be sitting by idly and will most probably make a bid of their own then as well. Unsurprisingly the folks at Dish, T-Mobile, and Deutsche Telekom have declined to comment on the rumor. What do you guys make of this latest rumor? Would Dish make a better candidate for T-Mobile, or would you prefer that Sprint be the one to acquire the company?

Tizen is an upcoming mobile operating system by Samsung that is intended to provide an alternative to Android and other mobile operating systems available at the moment. Given that Android is dominating with Apple’s iOS taking the number two spot, safe to say that Tizen had better have something to it that will make it stand out above the rest, meaning that Samsung definitely has their work cut out for them. According to the latest reports and rumors, Tizen is said to be released next year and that a prototype Tizen handset is currently being tested by Korean carriers.
Regardless of what it might be, thanks to a bunch of new screenshots, it would seem that Samsung has given Tizen a very drastic visual overhaul from what we have seen before, something that users might be able to appreciate. These screenshots are courtesy of the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service database, suggesting that they are the real thing. While there’s nothing wrong with how Tizen looked like before, the new look is quite refreshing and more lively and exudes a slightly “warmer” feel to it. There are also elements about it that reminds us of TouchWiz, but then again Samsung did design TouchWiz so we can’t blame them for borrowing some of its elements.
In any case like we said, there’s still no specific timeframe on when Tizen and its accompanying smartphones/ tablets will be released, but what do you guys think of this updated look? Yay or nay?

Yay for new features! Google Calendar now lets you search public events by name, city/town, or by the date that an event occurs. The search is pretty logical because it uses public calendars to retrieve the information and it also searches a few partners to show you movie listings and concerts. Here is what the Google Blog has to say about the new feature:
So whether you’re interested in broadway, movies, art, music, photography, farmer’s markets, Knicks basketball (we love ‘em in NY) or even good old dumpster diving, we hope you find this new feature useful. If you don’t see your favorite event, add it to a public calendar and share it with the world.
If you’re a dumpster diver then there are some events for you. 🙂
It is great the Google keeps adding new features but I think they need to consider what is really important: service integration and offline compatibility. The first thing and the most criticized with Google is that they have so many services but they are all treated separately. Google needs to find a way to bring them together so that more users can be made aware that they even exist.
Also, Google would surely dominate many markets if they created an offline desktop application for their services like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Notebook, and several others. That way users could add events to their calendar or read their email without having to worry about being online. Come on Google…take your services offline and bring all of your applications together!

San Francisco District Attorney Wants Activation Lock To Be Enabled By Default
Posted in: Today's ChiliOne of the changes Apple made to mobile security with iOS 7 was with Activation Lock, which is basically where the person who has reported their phone lost/stolen will have to enter their Apple ID and password to reenable it. The goal was to deter thieves from stealing phones since a stolen phone would essentially be rendered useless if the thief does not know the person’s Apple ID and password. We have seen lawmakers put Activation Lock to the test in which the results were fairly positive, but what’s the point of having a security feature if no one uses it, right?
George Gascon, the San Francisco district attorney, is now calling on Apple to enable this feature on all their smartphones by default, and requiring users to choose to opt-out as opposed to opting-in. We can see the merits of this proposal, especially since not all iPhone users might know about the feature, and having it enabled by default will offer them peace of mind, even if they don’t know about it, as opposed to them losing their phone and getting upset and frustrated because of a service they had but did not bother activating. What do you guys think of Gascon’s proposal? Do you think that features like Find My iPhone and Activation Lock should be enabled by default?
