You won’t believe this picture of Santa Claus was drawn with MS Paint

The things some people can do with a pencil and paper are just ridiculous. The things some people can do with Photoshop or iPad apps is just unreal. Art is amazing! But what might be as impressive as any of that is what this guy did with MS Paint. He created an unbelievably photo realistic picture of Santa Claus with everyone’s favorite stick figure drawing medium.

Noit Spectrum Phone Aims to Break the Smartphone Mold

While pretty much every smartphone today looks like a thin slab of glass and plastic or metal, this upcoming device eschews these conventions, going with a dramatically different approach.

noit spectrum phone 1magnify

Developed by Houston-based Noitavonne Instruments, the Noit Spectrum (aka the “Noit Joystick”) looks more like a canister of pepper spray, or some strange gizmo from the Star Trek medical deck than a phone. But if you look closely, you’ll see a numeric keypad there in the middle, and it does look vaguely like the shape of an old-school phone handset. There appears to be a small display at the top, as well as a set of physical buttons, and a screen on its side.

The device is actually being referred to as a “Mobile Companion Device,” so I’m not even sure it’s a full smartphone, or if it’s some sort of funky Bluetooth handset. I’m assuming it’s a standalone device, as it’s described as having a 1.2GHz processor, 3G connectivity, Wi-Fi and 64GB of storage, according to its entry on the CES website. I did manage to find a concept video up on YouTube which indicates that it is a full-fledged media player, which runs a flavor of Android, and can wirelessly stream content to larger displays.

While there’s no info yet up on the Noitavonne Instruments website, I’d assume we’ll find out more during CES next week.

Android 4.3 For HTC EVO 4G LTE To Arrive Mid-February

Android 4.3 For HTC EVO 4G LTE To Arrive Mid FebruaryThe HTC EVO 4G LTE was released back in the first half of 2012, making the handset more than a year old now, but the good news for those who are still holding onto the device is that HTC has not forgotten about you guys and has announced that the handset will be receiving its Android 4.3 Jelly  Bean update come mid-February 2014. This was confirmed by HTC’s Jason Mackenzie on Twitter in response to a question posed by a user. According to Mackenzie, the update is expected to be sent to Sprint for testing come mid-January and they are expecting that it will be released mid-February, assuming all goes well. However we have seen updates pulled and delayed for unknown reasons, so it’s best not to get your hopes up just yet.

Granted Android 4.3 is considered “old” given that Android 4.4 KitKat has already been released, with many Android users enjoying the latest update in its official glory or unofficial glory in the form of a custom ROM, but we suppose it’s better than nothing, right? No word on whether HTC plans on updating the EVO 4G LTE to Android 4.4 KitKat, but for now we’ll take what we can get. For those wondering why it takes so long for an update to be released, HTC has recently posted an infographic detailing the update process for those who might be curious.

Moto G For Verizon Leaked, Could Be Priced At $100

Moto G For Verizon Leaked, Could Be Priced At $100Word has it that Verizon has plans to bring the Motorola Moto G onto their network sometime next year, but unfortunately the exact date and pricing of said handset remains unknown for now. Well according to a recently leaked photo, it seems that while the date of the handset’s launch on Verizon remains unknown, what we might have found out is that the device could be priced at a very affordable $100. This is the price that the handset will cost off-contract, meaning that if you did not want to be tied down to any contract with the carrier, this is one of the options available to you at the moment. Of course since Verizon has not confirmed this themselves so do take it with a grain of salt for now.

The Moto G is Motorola’s latest Android offering and it is the cheaper version of its Moto X handset. The device was launched back in November and while it does not have the most powerful hardware that an Android phone could feature, we guess if the $100 price tag is true, then it is certainly one of the more affordable devices available at the moment. As far as specs are concerned, the Moto G will feature a 4.5” HD display and will pack a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor under its hood. It will be accompanied by 8GB of onboard storage, a 5MP rear-facing camera, and will run on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Hackers Claim To Have Attacked Dota 2, LoL, And Other Game Servers [Update]

Hackers Claim To Have Attacked Dota 2, LoL, And Other Game Servers [Update]When streaming over services like Twitch, there can be an immense amount of pressure because with thousands of people watching you play a game, you will want to win to avoid looking silly in front of your audience. However it seems that one particular gamer, a certain Phantoml0rd, had the added pressure thanks to a person/group going by the name of DERP who threatened him that if he were to lose the Dota 2 match that he was currently playing, they would attack the game’s servers. Unfortunately Phantoml0rd and his team lost that match the DERP kept to their word, with their Twitter account boasting about services, such as EA.com, having been taken offline.

The group has also managed to perform DDoS attacks on other games that Phantoml0rd began streaming on his Twitch account, such as League of Legends, Club Penguin, and Dota 2. According to Phantoml0rd, he believes that he was randomly targeted as he was top streamer on Twitch at that time. As it stands websites such as EA.com are still unable to load, with the folks at Polygon having reached out to the affected services for comments and when they might be able to expect their services to be able to resume.

Update – In a post by Phantoml0rd on Facebook, “Just had an automatic pointed at me, put in hand cuffs and sat in the back of a cop car as I watched as 6 policemen go through my whole house.. will keep you all updated.”

What happens when people draw a map of the world from memory

What happens when people draw a map of the world from memory

Can you draw a map of the world just from memory? And if you did, how accurate do you think your map would be? Probably not very. You’d forget some land masses, make things too close too each other, bulge continents the wrong way and hastily add stuff without knowing where they would go. But still. You’d at least get the general shape down, right? Well, here’s what it looks like when people draw a map of the world from memory.

IBM’s 5 in 5: The five ideas that will change your life

    (Credit: IBM)

Imagine doctors using your own DNA in diagnosing and treating you for everything from cancer to heart disease to stroke. According to researchers at IBM, that technology, now in use in just a handful of cases, will become common practice in the next five years.

IBM researchers included DNA sequencing and other ideas on their annual “5 in 5” list this year. It’s a list of what they call the five “innovations that will change the way we live” in the five years to come.

The theme of this year’s list (below) is “in the future everything will learn.”

    1. Buying local will beat online

Bernie Meyerson, vice president of innovation at IBM, told the co-hosts of “CBS This Morning” that “bottom line, you walk in, you want to buy a camera for $1,000, you would really like to have a feel for this.”

    (Credit: IBM)

That does not mean we will revert to how we used to shop. Meyerson said the future of shopping is a convergence of online and brick-and-mortar shopping, where a retailer knows your preferen… [Read more]
