NSA can hack WiFi devices from eight miles away (video)

The NSA may have the ability to intercept data from around the world, but we now know that it has some impressive (and intimidating) equipment for snooping on nearby targets. Security guru Jacob Appelbaum told those at the Chaos Communications …

DivShare Does Videos…Better Than Others!

This article was written on April 13, 2007 by CyberNet.

DivShare is a site that we watch very closely because they are one of the services that is unmatched on the Web. They are very active in keeping the service updated which is something I see as being very important. For example, in just the past few weeks they have managed to release DivShare Groups as well as redesign the Dashboard to make it much more user friendly.

Most video sharing services will normally compress your video down to 320 x 240 pixels, while DivShare’s new video service aims to nearly double that by making the maximum resolution 560 pixels. An example video has been posted here, but I noticed that the code they give you to embed the video in your site is slightly smaller in height/width:

You could easily modify the code yourself to make the video you’re embedding equal to the maximum resolution of 560 pixels in width. I think it would be a little better if they offered options for you to select which resolution you want to embed in your site.

One thing that may appeal to a lot of people is that you don’t have to register in order to upload videos with DivShare. When creating the video service they wanted to make sure that they kept their standards, so besides for not having to register you can also download all of the videos in a single click…and it will be in the format that it was uploaded!

They currently support MOV, AVI, WMV, MPG and ASF file formats with Real Video and 3GP support on the way. They also have a way to convert any of the videos that you have already uploaded in a file format specified above:

We know that a lot of you already have videos online — in fact, a large portion of our most popular files are already videos. To create a Flash version of a video that’s already on DivShare, just log in to your account and visit your video’s download page. From there, you’ll see a dialog with a link that says “Convert My Video Now” — click that, and you’re on your way! Conversion will take a few minutes, and you’ll get an e-mail when it’s all ready to go.

So we know that the resolution is higher than most video services, but how about the 200MB upload limit? I looked up the limitation that a few of the most popular services have and here they are:

  • Dailymotion: 150MB or 20 minutes
  • DivShare: 200MB
  • Google Video: Unlimited if using desktop uploader, otherwise 100MB
  • Metacafe: 100MB
  • Revver: 100MB
  • YouTube: 100MB or 10 minutes

DivShare isn’t 100% done with the video service but they are looking for any feedback that you may have on it. So stop by their post and leave a comment letting them know what you think of it!

Thanks for the tip Radu!

The SmartCharge Light Bulb works off the grid

SmartCharge
It’s difficult to try and go through a day without using an item that is powered by electricity. Almost all of the ways we cook food, communicate with one another, and work is plugged into the grid. That very reason is why it’s somewhat devastating for the power to go out. While it would be nice if a power outage didn’t affect us so much, there really aren’t any ways to keep things on, other than having a backup system. However, that turns on more lights than necessary, and you can’t run much on it anyway.

If all you’re really after is a bit of light so you can continue your work, then the SmartCharge Light Bulb can help. This isn’t some big new installation issue you’d have to trudge through (unless screwing in a light bulb is tough stuff to you). Whether the power is on or off, you won’t notice the difference, as it has a built-in rechargeable battery that it will draw from in case of an emergency.

Of course, this is the only time it will draw from the battery before recharging itself, as it can only function for about 4 hours on the battery alone. Taking away your ability to see abruptly is always terrifying, which is why power outages cause so much panic. Through this light bulb, you’ll be able to prepare what you need to deal with the outage in the dark. Putting down $35 will get you one of these bulbs.

New Samsung ARM Chromebook With Exynos 5 Octa Processor Expected In 2014

New Samsung ARM Chromebook With Exynos 5 Octa Processor Expected In 2014

Samsung is expected to release a successor to its first ARM based Exynos 5250 Chromebook in the coming year. The new ARM Chromebook will reportedly have an Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor based on ‘big.LITTLE” technology with four Cortex A7 1.3GHz low-power cores and four Cortex A15 1.8GHZ high-performance cores coupled with 3GB of RAM. Mali-TG28 GPU or graphics processing unit is also expected.

The new Samsung Chromebook is also rumored to have a 12 inch or less 2,560×1,600 pixel resolution display, 16GB or 32GB SSD storage and a battery capable of providing juice for seven hours. The price for this Chromebook is said to fall between $250 and $300, which would definitely make it an enticing option for customers looking to purchase an affordable notebook that runs on the heavily internet dependant Chrome OS. These notebooks have actually enjoyed much success this year, with latest data from the NPD Group revealing that 21 percent of all U.S. notebook sales in 2013 were accounted for by Chromebooks. One of the biggest reasons why they’re slowing gaining popularity is the price, which is relatively lower than conventional Windows 7 powered notebooks. Chromebooks are expected to perform better next year as well, with a new crop of notebooks expected to be unveiled next month at CES 2014. Samsung isn’t expected to unveil its latest ARM Chromebook at the show.

Twitter Stock Price Tanks As Analysts Raise Questions

Twitter Stock Price Tanks As Analysts Raise Questions

One of the biggest initial public offerings in 2013 came from Twitter. The microblogging network finally went public, it was touted to be the second biggest technology related IPO after Facebook last year. Twitter stock price soared in days that followed after the IPO, ballooning its market capitalization, but it appears that the surge might have been temporary. Once again, Twitter’s share dropped at market opening today down to $60.27 as opposed to the $63.75 closing price on Friday. On Friday alone shares dropped 13 percent, wiping $5 billion in market cap.

A number of analysts have raised questions about the company’s profitability. Yet to make any profit whatsoever, analysts believe that the company won’t be able to turn a profit until 2015. Ben Schachter has already downgraded Twitter stock while Bespoke Investment Group believes that the average price target of the microblogging network’s shares is at $44.27, roughly 35 percent under the current trading price. A major source of revenue is going to be advertising and with its announcement of retargeted ads, Twitter saw the stock reach an all time high on December 26th, which it touched $73.31 and added $15.7 billion in market cap. What is being referred to as the honeymoon period has now ended, and even though Twitter burst on the market with a 74 percent increase in stock price on IPO day, no ones forgetting that it all hinges on profitability.
