Epic skydiving with the Sony A7R camera

(Credit: Screenshot by CNET)

Simon Hammond has previously been the visual brain behind campaigns for brands like Red Bull, Olympus, and Motorola. In this marketing video for Sony, he takes the concept of changing lenses to an entirely new — stratospheric — level.

The Sony A7R is an interchangeable-lens camera with a 36-megapixel sensor and no optical low-pass filter, which means images should be sharper than those from cameras with the filter in place. You can read our review of its companion camera, the A7, here.

There isn’t really any other information about the video or how it was made, so we suggest you just sit back and enjoy a look at the most epic lens change we’ve ever seen. It’s a clever bit of marketing, even if we’re not entirely sure that the lens swap in the closeup could really be performed so steadily while hurtling toward the ground.

Nexus 5 Reportedly To Blame For LG G2′s Poor Sales

Nexus 5 Reportedly To Blame For LG G2s Poor SalesThe LG G2 is LG’s flagship smartphone of 2013 and while the handset is pretty decently specced, with a great display and awesome camera, it seems that it isn’t quite getting the love it should, at least according to reports. If the reports are to be believed, it seems that LG has only managed to sell 2 million LG G2 units to date, which is only a fraction of what they had originally intended to sell for 2013. LG had initially planned to sell 10 million units of the LG G2 but according to a report from DigiTimes, the company has only managed a fifth of those sales to date, and the reason isn’t because it’s a bad phone, but rather because it is due to the Nexus 5.

The Nexus 5 is Google’s latest Nexus device which is based on specs somewhat similar to the LG G2. It isn’t as powerful as the LG G2 or sport the same camera, but it is very decent, not to mention its asking price makes it a very attractive alternative to the LG G2 or any other smartphone available in the market today. So far apart from camera issues, the Nexus 5 has been met with generally positive reviews, giving customers little reason to go with the LG G2 unless the camera was their priority. In any case if the rumors are to be believed, LG could be working on a successor to the G2 in the form of the G3 which could debut as early as MWC 2014.

Nokia Pulls HERE Maps From iTunes App Store

Nokia Pulls HERE Maps From iTunes App StoreThere are a variety of mapping apps available in Apple’s iTunes App Store, although by default Apple Maps are installed. However due to the snafu of the initial launch of Apple Maps, Google came to the rescue with an old favorite with Google Maps, but at the same time we figure that there are those who might still prefer alternatives, such as Bing, or maybe even Nokia’s HERE Maps. Unfortunately for fans of the latter, Nokia has since pulled their HERE Maps from the iTunes App Store, claiming that the changes made in iOS 7 would harm the user experience of the app.

According to a statement made by Nokia, “We have made the decision to remove our HERE Maps app from the Apple App Store because recent changes to iOS 7 harm the user experience. iPhone users can continue to use the mobile web version of HERE Maps under m.here.com., offering them core location needs, such as search, routing, orientation, transit information and more, all completely free of charge.” If you’re wondering if this has anything to do with the Microsoft-Nokia deal, you might be mistaken as the HERE Maps division will remain with Nokia after the acquisition goes through.

So, anyone else bummed out by HERE Maps being removed from the iTunes App Store?

Mr. Postman Is A Smart Mailbox

Mr. Postman Is A Smart Mailbox

While email is more or less the standard of communication these days, companies still like to send out snail mail, not to mention our parcels that we order online are also shipped physically and sometimes left in our mailboxes too. Well wouldn’t it be awesome that you could be notified whenever a mail gets left in your mailbox, kind of like a push notification but only for physical mail? Well that’s where Mr. Postman comes in. This is a Kickstarter project that basically combines a smart mailbox along with an app that notifies the user whenever they’ve got a new package, or when the mail they’re trying to send has been picked up.

The mailbox can also be unlocked via a special digital key that only you have access to, or you can provide your neighbors or family with a one-time use password to let them pick up mail for you when you’re on vacation. For those who own multiple properties, fret not because the app is able to control all your mailboxes on all your properties as well, and will provide you with the same notifications regarding mail being delivered or picked up. Best of all, the final design actually resembles a mailbox as opposed to some fancy high-tech design, making it inconspicuous and something that no one would think twice about. As it stands Mr. Postman is a Kickstarter project seeking funding, so to learn more or to pledge a donation, hit up its websitefor the details.
