Snowmen are great. Everyone loves a good snowman! But if you’re expecting piles and piles of the white stuff this year, have a ton of free time on your hands, and want to make something truly cool, why not go all-out and construct an urban igloo?
The North American Aerospace Defense Command directs its super sensitive equipment to track Santa Claus every year, its sort of a tradition now, one that’s bound to be loved by kids all around the world. The world of technology and intelligence is full of competition so it doesn’t really come as a surprise that there’s a new service out there that directly competes with NORAD’s Santa tracker. Google has thrown its hat in the ring as well, developed a Santa tracker of its own with Google Maps baked right into it, allowing people to see exactly where in the world Santa and his reindeers are spreading joy.
Initially Google launched the Santa Tracker game earlier this month, it remains live even now. The tracker, however, went live recently and lets people track him wherever he might be in the world. Through Santa’s dashboard, they can also see what his next location is going to be be. Google’s Santa tracker is accessible through a web browser, there’s also an app for Android devices. If you’re one of the lucky few who have their hands on a Google Glass, there’s a Santa tracker app available for it as well, which shows notifications about his movements in Glass’ heads up display.

It has almost been an entire year since BlackBerry set upon its perceived path to recovery, with great fanfare. The company conducted six separate events in six different cities around the world to celebrate the launch of its new platform, BlackBerry 10 and the announcement of two new devices, the Z10 and the Q10. Both devices failed to make their mark, and the Z30 didn’t prove to be a hit either. It became clear early in the year that BlackBerry’s new devices weren’t going to be a success and it appears that the company itself knew that, seeing as how it cancelled plans to release two more devices in 2013.
The Wall Street Journal discovered this information buried deep inside the SEC filings that the company made after revealing its Q3, 2013 fiscal results, a quarter where it lost $4.4 billion. The company said that it cancelled the launch “to mitigate the identified inventory risk.” The devices, rumored as the Cafe and Kopi series, were believed to be low-end devices geared towards emerging markets. There weren’t even expected to be released in North America or Europe. BlackBerry has now made significant changes to have it makes smartphones. It has partnered with Foxconn for five years to develop smartphones for emerging markets, whereas Waterloo will focus on high-end devices preferred by customers in Western markets as well as its enterprise customers.

You can do a lot through your phone now, things that you probably wouldn’t have imagined doing this way nearly a decade ago. Technology has significantly advanced since then and has grown smaller, we can easily fit the most technologically advanced phones in our pockets. While there are other solutions that let you enjoy the joy of flight through your phone, such as quadcopters and drones, they are often expensive, certainly a lot expensive than a paper airplane. This is where the PowerUp 3.0 comes in, its a small kit that lets you control your paper airline through a phone.
The kit is made up of small propellers and a rudder at the back, whereas there’s a central unit upfront that has a micro-USB charging port and a low power Bluetooth radio. This crash proof kit offers 10 minutes of flight time after a single charge, commands are beamed through Bluetooth which offers a range of up to 180 feet. It will be compatible with both iOS and Android phones once its released. At this point in time, PowerUp 3.0 is a Kickstarter campaign seeking funding from people like you and me. Though its not like they need the money, the Kickstarter goal was $50,000 and so far this project has received donations that amount to $784,114 at the time of this writing. Talk about smashing a goal.

Its not like there hasn’t already been much talk about the upcoming flagship Galaxy smartphone from Samsung. The company is expected to release the Galaxy S5 earlier than originally planned next year, some believe that the announcement might be made as soon as January. There has been a lot of debate about the specifications its supposed to tout, we have heard conflicting reports about its display. As per the latest coming in from local Korean media, the company has reportedly started mass producing 5.25 inch AMOLED panels for the Galaxy S5 which boast an impressive 2,560×1,440 pixel resolution.
While not as pure like the RGB layout used in LCD screens, these panels reportedly use the “diamond” pixel arrangement that we first saw in the Galaxy S4 and later in the Galaxy Note 3. This pixel arrangement is much better and more preferred than the “pentile” arrangement seen in Galaxy S3. The display itself is said to have a pixel density of 559 ppi, much more that its current rivals. A number of manufacturers are expected to offer 2,560×1,440 displays in their flagships next year, Samsung just might end up leading the pack. It should be kept in mind that there’s no confirmation from Samsung as yet on the Galaxy S5, so these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.
