For years, Sabra Klein has been trying to start a conversation about sex. The Johns Hopkins immunologist studies why women have stronger immune systems than men—a phenomenon that underlies the fact that women are three times more likely to develop autoimmune diseases—but are also better protected by vaccines. The latter, however, has gotten very little attention from vaccine makers or doctors.
On this day in 1982, the government informed the residents of Times Beach, Missouri that they would have to evacuate. The town had paved its own roads with dioxin, among the most toxic cancer-causing substances made by man.

The Key Keeper will save your stuff from scratches, and make you lose your keys
Posted in: Today's Chili
The single best way to find your keys if they are lost in the abyss of your bag is to shake it until you hear jingling. Of course, this also means you’re going to be scratching metal against anything else that you may be keeping in there. If you have items that might be prone to scuffing, then you might want something that will subdue the aggressive nature of your keys.
If you don’t have a separate compartment or smaller pouch for your keys, then the Key Keeper will help you to keep things organized and looking new. It is a very simple, yet effective idea which can save the screen of your delicate gadgets and gizmos from being beaten up. These are little rectangles of silicone that will fit just about any key shape.
They have a hole at the top so you can still attach them to your key ring, and when you want to unlock the door, just press it into the key slot. The silicone will push back enough for the key to go in, and will cover the key again once you’re finished with the task at hand. These come in a variety of colors, which is very handy for color coding your keys. Getting a set of three of these will cost you around $24, but you’re likely going to want more depending on how many you carry around. It will make your key ring heavier, and you won’t be able to use echolocation to find your keys anymore, but it’ll be up to you to decide the pros and cons.

Where Are You Working From Today?
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt’s December 23, and it’s almost certainly National Work From Anywhere But The Office Day. I’m currently dispatching from my parents’ kitchen. Where are you?
Even Orson the baby is in shock that his parents could so cleverly re-create this scene from "Jaws" using cardboard boxes and sheets.

When your home is overrun with cardboard boxes thanks to a move, you can store them in the basement, recycle them, or better yet, transform them into your own magical world full of dinosaurs, aliens, sharks, and Jedi.
That’s exactly what Lilly and Leon Mackie did to entertain themselves and their newborn son, Orson. Rather than get rid of all their boxes, they built movie sets and props out of them, and other household items, to re-create scenes from their favorite films — with themselves as the stars.

Over a million people from around the world gather at this famous location in midtown Manhattan where one of the world’s largest celebration of New Year’s Eve takes place. Moreover, the celebration is broadcasted and viewed by over a billion people. HP 11 Chromebook Review
Posted in: Today's ChiliAs I was about to publish my review about a month ago, the HP 11 Chromebook sale was put to an halt upon report of overheating charger. It was decided to wait until how this will affect the future of the device before putting the article online. At the core of the issue, there were “nine reports of chargers overheating and melting during use”. The recall affected 145,000 units. The charger was from a 3rd party, and not from HP, subcontracted by Google.
On the 12/17/2013, Google and HP officially started the charger recall/exchange program. In case the user did not follow the news, the ChromeOS was patched to notify the owner about the recall. A picture of the “new” and the “old” charger was displayed to the user to identify. There is an option to opt out. The charger would be sent first with a packing slip to return the recalled device.
That being said, I did not notice any overheating with the charger. I actually used it to replace my Samsung Note 3 charger. I would charge my note 3 at night and the HP chromebook during the day while I am out of the house. Using an infrared thermometer gun, the reading are; 68.4°F for the Pixel and 68.3°F for MBA and 109.6°F for the HP 11 charger, room temperature was 68.2°F. I am awaiting the replacement charger from Google and would update this review if needed.
The timing of this was very unfortunate for HP/Google. Although the charger issue was addressed, the Chromebook HP 11 is still showing as “out of stock” on the main vendors websites. Hopefully they will get back on the shelves, because, although the Chromebook HP 11 is not perfect, it is still a cutie. Let’s take a closer look. (more…)

Xbox One Laptop: The VCR Slims Down
Posted in: Today's ChiliOkay, okay, I kid. The Xbox One doesn’t look that much like a VCR, but it still is about a big as one. But leave it to an enterprising console modder like James “DarkUncle” Terry to solve that problem, by transforming an Xbox One into a laptop.
What you’re looking at here is what I’m reasonably certain is the very first Xbox One laptop mod. The Console measures only two-inches-thick when closed, and that includes the size of the LCD flat panel built into its lid. That’s even more impressive when you realize that the Xbox One normally measures almost three inches-thick. The top of the console has a matte black finish, with an integrated touch power control and a gloss black shell around the outside. He also added custom buttons for controller sync, eject, and audio volume. Between its additional cooling fans and the standard Xbox One heatsink, James says it stays nice and cool too.
The laptop has all of the regular ports from an Xbox One, but also added an audio line-out connector, which Microsoft neglected to include on the console. Check out the build in the video below:
Great job, James! Now all you need to do is figure out a way to build the Kinect into it, and shrink down Microsoft’s power brick, and all will be right with the world.
If you’re interested in having your own custom Xbox One laptop built, head on over to Dark Uncle Custom Gaming to get in touch with James.
