iPod Sales Are On The Decline

ipodsalesBack in the day, Apple’s iPod was one of the company’s best selling products. In a way it was even a fashion statement thanks to the white earphones that easily identified the wearer as an iPod owner, to the extent where other companies started to issue white earphones with their products as well. However fast forward to today, the iPod is hardly garnering the same amount of attention or excitement as it once did. After all our phones and tablets are just as capable of playing songs and performing more functions, so why would we need an additional device just for that, right? To that extent even Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, acknowledged that the iPod is a declining business.

Speaking at Apple’s quarterly earnings call, Cook was quoted as saying, “The way we look at it, our business is a sell-through point of view less iPod — all of us have known for some time that iPod is a declining business.” In fact the graph above shows that sales of the iPod have been on the decline. Apple has yet to announce any changes to their iPod lineup, apart from introducing a new color option for the iPod touch, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle. In fact the iPod classic, the iPod with the largest storage, has not been updated in over four years. We’re not sure what this means for the future of the iPod product line, but what do you guys think? Will Apple eventually discontinue it or will they just maintain it with slight improvements here and there over the next few years?

I'd love to watch a Game of Thrones set in beautiful feudal era Japan

Game of Thrones is one of the most beautiful shows on television because of its expansive sets, elaborate costumes (and lack thereof), obsession with detail, intimidating weather and anything dealing with the world of Westeros. It’s such a magnificent place that even if the characters disappeared I could watch the golden glow of King’s Landing and the snowy Northern truth clash. But what if Game of Thrones was set somewhere else? Could it be… more beautiful? If it was set in feudal Japan, it just might be.

Facebook Reportedly Hiring Editors For Paper

logo_facebook-rgb-7inch2.png.648x0_q90_replace_alphaAs you might have heard not too long ago, Facebook is rumored to be creating their own version of Flipboard called Facebook Paper. This basically pushes news to your feed, but unlike News Feed where it relies on an algorithm to determine what sort of news you might be interested in and what you might want to read about, Facebook Paper will use actual human beings to help curate news and deliver content instead, which we guess has its pros and cons. On one hand it might provide you access to the latest news faster, but on the other hand the topics that are delivered might be biased depending on who’s serving it up. In any case it looks like Facebook Paper is inching towards reality as according to reports, it seems that Facebook is currently in the process of hiring Editors for the new feature.

According to Re/code’s sources, they claim that Paper Editors will only be able to choose content from the ones that have already been published. This is good news for websites who might appreciate the additional promotion, but might not necessarily be useful for some users who will basically be seeing the same information twice. The goal of Paper appears to be more geared towards publishers and encouraging them to post content on Facebook rather than promote their news on alternative platforms, such as Twitter, for example. No word on when Paper will launch but it has been rumored to be announced in the coming weeks, so be sure to check back with us then for the details.

Samsung Admits Galaxy Note 3 KitKat Update Might Have Caused Issues With Accessories

gn3_case_slim_armor_view-smooth_black-640x3861Earlier we had reported that the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note 3 on AT&T’s network had been leaked. Well if you were thinking about getting your hands on the update you might want to hold off from doing so just yet. According to previous reports, there were complaints from several users who claimed that after updating to Android 4.4 KitKat, several accessories for their Galaxy Note 3 handset had stopped working. One of the notable examples was with the S-View cases which no longer triggered a special screen when closed. However at that time, Samsung advised users to purchase the official case rather than third party ones instead of acknowledging that there could be an issue with the update.

Now Samsung has done a 180 and come forward and admitted that there could be some software issues with the latest update that has affected third party accessories. In a statement Samsung released, “We have currently identified a software compatibility issue with the Galaxy Note 3 update to Android 4.4 (KitKat) and select 3rd party accessories. A software update will be available shortly. We are committed to offering a diverse and reliable mobile experience for all customers, providing continued support and solutions for any issues that arise with product updates for both Samsung manufactured and third-party accessories.” So there you have it, if you were thinking about updating to the latest Android, at least hold off from doing so until the fix has been issued.

Apple Now Allowed To Be More Transparent About Government Surveillance Requests

apple_logo2We’re sure that there are many of you guys out there who are curious as to what sort of data tech companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft provide to government agencies like the NSA. Unfortunately this kind of information, for the most part, tends to be quite secretive in nature and potentially controversial. Well the good news is that Apple and the US Department of Justice have recently reached a deal in which Apple is now allowed to be more transparent with its customers regarding information on surveillance requests. Earlier Apple’s CEO Tim Cook stated that he would love to be more transparent with their customers but could not simply due to certain restrictions put into place.

However according to the new deal, “As indicated in the Justice Department’s filing with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the administration is acting to allow more detailed disclosures about the number of national security orders and requests issued to communications providers, and the number of customer accounts targeted under those orders and requests including the underlying legal authorities. Through these new reporting methods, communications providers will be permitted to disclose more information than ever before to their customers.” With the rumors that tech companies are working with the NSA to provide intel and data on customers, the need to be transparent is greater than ever, and hopefully this deal will allow just that.

Helpful Tip: Get the Old Firefox Address Bar Back

This article was written on December 21, 2007 by CyberNet.

If you’ve been brave enough to venture into the realm of Firefox 3 Beta 2 there is no denying that you’ve seen the newly designed Location/Address Bar (pictured above). It’s big, prominent, and is likely to irritate some people who prefer the more streamlined Address Bar that we’ve come to know and love. Give me just 30 seconds of your time and we can bring back the classic look…

    1. Start Firefox.
    2. In the Address Bar type “about:config” and press Enter.
    3. Right-Click and select New->Boolean.
    4. A box requesting the Preference Name will popup and you should enter “browser.urlbar.richResults ” (without the quotes). Press OK to continue.
    5. Select “False” from the box and press OK again.
    6. Restart Firefox

Now you should be able to enjoy your single-line condensed view of addresses that are shown when you begin to type in the Location Bar. Obviously this setting will have no effect on older versions of Firefox, but a lot of people I know have already jumped on the Firefox 3 bandwagon so I thought it would be a good time to share this tip.

Oh, and don’t forget about the last Address Bar tip we posted. That works in all versions of Firefox.

Every regeneration means not only a new Doctor, but also a new outfit for him to wear. In this picture, released today by the BBC, we see Capaldi in a rather conservative but dapper outfit — no fez hats, no long scarves, no Chucks, and no bow ties for this Time Lord!

Making a sharp impression with a dark-blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, and a white shirt, as well as black Dr. Martens shoes, the look for Capaldi was created by “Doctor Who” costume designer Howard Burden.

Nintendo’s Mobile Strategy Might Include Free Mini Games

nintendo-mobileFollowing the announcement that they would be slashing Wii U sales forecasts, Nintendo also announced that they would be studying mobile devices. By that we don’t mean that Nintendo will actually release games like Mario or Zelda on mobile devices, but rather find a way to use mobile to attract gamers onto their hardware and software. Well if you were wondering what that might play out, according to a report from Nikkei, they claim that Nintendo will use mobile devices to air trailers as well as provide free mini games to gamers in hopes of enticing them to check out their products.

The mini games will be offered for free after which gamers have the option of purchasing the full game itself if they wish to experience everything it has to offer. This sounds like an amazing idea although we’re not sure if Nintendo will actually go through with it since there has not been any official announcements yet. Imagine being able to play mini games like the ones in Mario Party on your mobile device. For example Nintendo could offer one or two stages for free and then you’d have to buy the game to unlock the rest. In a way it could also help Nintendo gauge the interest of gaming on mobile devices where down the line, they might even reconsider releasing their exclusive titles on mobile devices as well! What do you guys think of this potential strategy?
