Maingear Pulse 17 review: portability, paint and power come at a hefty price

Whisper it, but we think that 2014 is going to be a watershed year for PC gaming. Despite dwindling interest in the platform (compared to smartphones and tablets), heavy-duty machines for polygon cranking are gaining more prominence. After all, the …

KitTea cat cafe welcomes feline friends

Awwww…. who wouldn't want to share a cup of tea with a kitty?

(Credit: Kittens in Teacups)

Ever sit in a cafe and wish you were surrounded by cats staring at you while you sipped your tea? Or perhaps you wish the Kittens in Teacups blog could come to life right before your eyes? Those feline fantasies can become reality with a new cat cafe called KitTea coming to San Francisco this year.

Founded by cat enthusiasts Courtney Hatt and David Braginsky, KitTea promises to be part “gourmet tea house” and part “cat and human oasis” that will “create a Zen retreat where people and cats can hang out to the benefit of both — through the vehicle of a teahouse.”

Photos of Tourists Staring at the WTC Are Weirdly Riveting

If you’ve ever taken a lunchtime stroll in Lower Manhattan, you’ve seen them: Sightseers (and locals, too) with their eyes raised skyward, watching the construction of One World Trade Center. Annoying to some, but revealing to photographer Keith Goldstein—whose photo essay Looking On captures the craning.

Zipi Solves The Single Most Annoying Thing About Using Earbuds

zipi

The Zipi is a Kickstarter project that appears humble and almost silly on the surface, but that actually solves one of the biggest problems I have with day-to-day use of earbud headphones. I use earbuds whenever I leave the house, because exposing yourself to the noise of streets and other human beings going about their business is unconscionable, but getting them out of the way when you want to interact with people is a pain.

To solve this, the Zipi adds an around-the-neck strap to any existing pair of earbuds, with a simple magnetic clip-on design. It connects via magnets at the back of your neck, separates easily enough when you want to remove them entirely, and prevents your earbuds from just falling to the ground when you take them out of your ears.

Ordinarily when I remove earbuds on the go, I awkwardly throw them over one shoulder or roll them up and stuff them in a pocket. In scenario one, they almost always sneak off my shoulders and find their way to the floor where I step on them. In scenario two, getting them off and then putting them back on again amounts to a full-scale production, which is extremely annoying if you also happen to be carrying any bags or coffee or whatever.

I can still foresee potential issues with coat collars and other jazz with the Zipi, but it looks favorable when compared with the terrible, unending nightmare that is my current state of earbud cord management. Plus they’re only $6 per unit at the introductory early backer price, and they don’t seem to require any kind of advanced engineering that could cause innumerable shipping delays.

Project creator Frank Cho has a Master’s degree from MIT in AI, as well as a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in computer graphics, so he’s clearly got a good head on his shoulders. He makes no secret about the fact that the Zipi is his first foray into product design, but he has a realistic timeframe for delivery of early September and a fully functional prototype already built, so here’s hoping the Zipi meets its modest $6,000 funding goal.

Vault 101 Sneakers Help You Sneak Past Mutants, Won’t Protect You from Radiation

One of my favorite video game franchises is Fallout. If you are a fan of the game, you will appreciate the latest product from Bethesda Softworks called Vault 101 Sneakers. They are also known as Vault-Tec Item 72778011-101.

Created by Tweak Footwear, these Fallout sneakers have the blue and yellow colors that are so popular for those locked away inside the vaults. They are covered in blue suede leather with yellow trim, which is guaranteed to bleed if you get them wet or expose them to high doses of radiation. The shoes also feature a molded EVA sock liner for durability, but does nothing to reduce your chances of contamination.

The Vault 101 sneakers are offered in sizes from 7 up to 14. Girls who want a pair need to subtract two from their size since they are men’s sizes.

The shoes are officially licensed Fallout merchandise and are available now for $84.99(USD) per pair from ThinkGeek or the Bethesda Store.

Doctor Who Trivial Pursuit: Winning Proves You’re Smarter on the Inside

The Doctor Who merchandising machine has really kicked into high gear of late. It seems like every time we turn around there is something new carrying the Doctor Who brand. This time out, there is a new trivia game for fans of the series to compete against each other with.

who triviamagnify

The game is the Doctor Who Trivial Pursuit Travel Edition. It’s like traditional Trivial Pursuit, but all the questions are Doctor Who themed, naturally.

I think my friends might like this game. I usually dominate at normal Trivial Pursuit, leaving my opponents feeling dumb and defeated (with good reason). They won’t play the game with me anymore. Since I have never watched a single episode of Doctor Who all the way through, they might have a chance.

The cards have 600 questions and include categories like Time Lords, Companions, Episodes & Stories, Monsters, Cast, Crew, & Beyond, and Years and Dates. The game is available for $19.99(USD) from ThinkGeek. The game comes with a Dalek die,  numerous question cards, and a blue wedge container to hold it all. What, no TARDIS?
