You might say the day is never really done in consumer technology news. Your workday, however, hopefully draws to a close at some point. This is the Daily Roundup on Engadget, a quick peek back at the top headlines for the past 24 hours — all …
I’m not sure what it is about seeing a giant piece of metal being swallowed by another giant piece of metal but it’s almost therapeutic. It’s like seeing insect fights on YouTube but on a more gargantuan, real life Transformers level. Whatever it is, I can’t get enough. Here’s the Hammel Red Giant Car Shredder having its way with a little car. I keep hoping that the little green car can get away but it never does. Sad. But so much weird fun to see.
Microsoft already gave Windows 8 users the option to boot their machines directly to the desktop, but a future update could make the classic interface standard. According to known leaker WZor, the latest Windows 8.1 test build skips over Microsoft’s …
Do you think that self-driving cars would one day be so popular, that there is no need for one to actually own a driving license any more? I guess a whole lot of it really depends on the situation, but one thing is for sure – cars do seem to be getting smarter and smarter in this day and age. In fact, a team of engineering students over in India who happen to be working on a project over at the Mount Zion College of Engineering and Technology have decided to develop a thought-controlled car. Yes sir, you can feel all smug as though you were Professor Xavier himself, as this small van has been transformed into a thought controlled vehicle using off the shelf parts.

Fruit Flies Aid In Cancer Detection
Posted in: Today's ChiliHow many of us would take a look at fruit flies and figure out that they are nothing but pests? Well, scientists have decided to find a better use for fruit flies, using them to detect cancer instead. Talk about one man’s meat being another man’s poison! How exactly does a fruit fly detect cancer in a person? Well, it will sit on a podium as shown in the middle of the picture above, as scents are emitted from the tube on the left and sent in the direction of the fly itself. Using its sense of smell, these fruit flies are able to tell the difference between cancerous cells and healthy ones. The fruit flies used are no ordinary ones though, they have been genetically modified so that their antennae will glow whenever they pick up a cancerous odor. All of the appearance of these insects are monitored through a microscope.

Just recently, Google added a new feature so that you can associate non-Gmail addresses to your Google account. What I mean by this is that you can inform Google that you have other email accounts – maybe a Windows Live or Yahoo account. At this point, there are only two main advantages for doing this. One advantage is that you can now log into your Google account with one of the added email addresses. The second advantage is that now if someone were to invite you to an event on Google Calendar using one of your other non-Gmail addresses, Google will know that it’s you and the invitation will be displayed.
So how do you go about doing this? Go to www.google.com and sign in. Then click on the edit link next to your personal information. There’s a box (shown below) where you can enter in additional email addresses.
Once you enter an address, you’ll notice that it’ll say “pending verification.” Google will send you an email to the email address that you entered where you’ll have to verify that it is in fact your account. The email I received when I entered in a Hotmail address is shown below.
Keep in mind that if you decide to sign in to Google with one of the associated email addresses, you’ll enter the complete address (e.g., yourname@hotmail.com) and then you’ll enter your Gmail password (not the password for the associated account). If by chance you associate an email address with your Google account and you later decide that you no longer want it to be, you can easily remove it. Hopefully in the future, Google will add more benefits to using this feature other than the Calendar and the fact you can sign in to your Google account with another non-Google email address.

I would suppose that for the longest time, we have had to use this thing called “imagination” to enjoy books according to how our brain interprets the particular story. Well, how about bringing it to the next level this time around with the Sensory Fiction? Sensory Fiction happens to be a project that is being worked upon by a MIT team, where it kicked off with the appropriately titled “The Girl Who Was Plugged In,” which was written by James Tiptree Jr. Throughout the entire story, the main protagonist would have undergone a roller coaster of emotions which will range from love all the way to despair, in addition to physical sensations such as coldness and warmth. You will need to read this book while wearing a harness, just like how those “Typing of the Dead” characters walked around in the game. This harness would see the book placed over your torso, where it includes LEDs to recreate the lighting from the story, small heating devices that are able to warm the skin, vibrating mechanisms which do its bit to affect one’s heart rate as well as a compression system with airbags that will tighten and loosen, depending on what is happening within the story itself.
