Creepy Real-Life Emojis Are Part of a Campaign to Protect Kids

Emojis look cute in your inbox and chat windows, but they reveal nothing about the true nature of the person on the other end. Of course, you can probably vouch for people you actually know.

But what about strangers who chat you up because they find your avatar pretty or because they find your username clever? You might know better than to fall for such lines and assume that you’re chatting with a nice person because of the plethora of smiling and winking emojis he’s sending your way – but kids don’t. That can easily make them susceptible to online predators who prey on the young and innocent.

Emoji Campaign 620x437magnify

With this in mind, international non-profit Innocence en Danger commissioned ad agency Rosapark to create a series of images using creepy, real-life emoticons to raise awareness on these dangers kid can encounter online.

The posters and gargantuan emoji-fied faces are beyond creepy. Hopefully, the campaign will encourage more parents to pay attention to what their kids are doing online.

Honda Grom: City Commutes Should Always Be This Fun

Honda Grom: City Commutes Should Always Be This Fun

Pound for pound, there’s no bit of technology that made me happier last year than the brand new Honda Grom motorcycle. Is it cheating that it’s not strictly a gadget? I don’t care. Even if the Grom still breaks fast on old-fashioned dino juice, its diminutive size paired with 50-state street legality changed the way I think about city transit and my personal motive needs.

Grind this: Onewheel electric skateboard balances itself

Four wheels is three too many.

(Credit: Onewheel)

Electric skateboards have been the subject of quite a bit of effort in the last few years as inventions aimed to go offroad or up hills with an electric assist. Those boards have something in common: four wheels. The Onewheel on Kickstarter ditches three of those extraneous round things and just slaps one big wheel in the middle of the board.

You may not be able to pull off a McTwist with the Onewheel, but it does have certain advantages over a more standard design. Riding it offers more of a surfing or snowboarding sensation. It has a much shorter learning curve than a regular skateboard, thanks to the fat center wheel and self-balancing features.

The Onewheel can go up to 12 mph and has a range of up to 6 miles. Gyro and accelerometer sensors keep the board in touch with your body to prevent you from taking a tumble. It’s like someone distilled a Segway into its simplest possible form.

Take a Visual Tour of the World's Most Modern Slaughterhouse

Right, I’m going to kick off this post by saying that I am not a squeamish person. I love food, I love meat, and I particularly love pork. In an ideal world, we would all get our meat from the guy in our village whose family has lovingly cared for their animals over generations, given the animals the best possible life, fed them only the best food, read them a bed-time story every night and given them kilometers of space to roam free in before being humanely and ceremoniously slaughtered by the patriarch of the family.

BlackBerry Soars 10% On Pentagon Order, Shares Now Up 34% In 2014

Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 10.01.06 AM

BlackBerry has an almost uncanny ability to not die when it’s been written off again and again. Today, the Pentagon has announced that it will install 80,000 BlackBerry handsets on its network by the end of January. According to Fox News, the new phones are part of the Pentagon’s “new mobile program for unclassified work.” BlackBerry’s shares soared 10% in midday trading on the news.

The Pentagon’s faith in BlackBerry gives the company the sort of credibility it needs to retain corporate clients and keep investors interested in its future — that it has one.

Today’s gains pushed BlackBerry temporarily north of the $10 per share mark. The company is trading at the time of writing a hair below that threshold. BlackBerry ended 2013 at $7.44, meaning it is up around 34% so far in 2014.

Given that we are less than a month into the year, that’s somewhat impressive.

BlackBerry has suffered from declining device sales, loss of corporate clients, and eroding mind share more than commensurate with its slipping unit volume. This Google Trends chart is telling, I think, showing the decline in interest in BlackBerry:

Blue: iPhone. Red: Android. Yellow: BlackyBerry. Green: Windows Phone

Blue: iPhone. Red: Android. Yellow: BlackBerry. Green: Windows Phone

But whether BlackBerry could carve out a niche away from the consumer space, vending its hardware and software to large clients was never a closed question. The Pentagon’s installation plan of new BlackBerry devices certainly keeps the dream alive.

Unless, of course, the Pentagon is making a poor buying decision and BlackBerry’s future remains as cloudy as widely thought.

The Canadiano Coffee Brewer is perfect for picky coffee consumers

Canadiano_Back-and-sides
If you drink a lot of the same food or beverage, you’ll eventually be able to pick out the finer points of how it tastes. Wine is a wonderful example, as there is an overwhelming amount of options available, but two things can taste almost identical to the untrained tongue. Coffee is very similar, and while we consume mass quantities of this drink daily, it’s hard to not be a little swept up in the quality of the beans and method of brewing.

Each method yields slightly different results, and for those who want a perfect cup of brew, then nothing less than the best will do. The Canadiano Coffee Brewer is a fine example of elitist preparation practices. Keep in mind that I’m not saying that with a negative connotation, as I enjoy being a bit of a coffee snob, but if you’re going to spend anywhere from $45-75 on a single-cup brewing method, then you can’t say you’re not being a tad bit elitist.

This is a wood and metal combination that will allow your cup of joe to improve over time as it will be drawing from the oil in the coffee beans of cups past consumed. They are a bit specific about what types of coffee should be brewed in which kind of Canadiano Brewer, “The Walnut edition is crafted and designed for use with darker roasts and earthier flavors such as beans from South East Asia. Maple and Cherry is designed for beans with slight citrus hints and nutty taste.” For those who have the refined taste, this will be a pleasant edition to your day, otherwise, it’s a lot of money to put down for no reason.
