The power of tears: Why Google has its eye on smart contact lenses

When the cronut craze swept across New York in early spring of last year, the only major inconvenience associated with Dominique Ansel’s novel culinary confection was the pain of waiting in line to get it. For a responsible person living with Type 1 …

Best of CES 2014 Ubergizmo Awards

Last week, we gave 10 Best of CES awards, and the physical trophies have already been delivered, but as a last look back on CES 2014, here’s the list for the record, and why we like those products or technologies. Here they are, in no particular order and see you next year for another crazy week in Las Vegas. Drop a comment to let us know what your favorite CES product was!

1/ Intel Edison

Best of CES 2014 Ubergizmo AwardsIntel wants to enter the wearable tech market and their Edison SD-Card sized computer may just get them there much faster. We have seen some pretty small computers in the past, some as small as a shirt button, but Intel’s is basically a PC shrunk into the size of a memory card. The choice for using the SD card format is astute because device makers can already have access to a wealth of options to build their hardware. While the card uses the SD Card physical format, it is not limited at all by the SD protocol, so developers are free to build any system they want. We can’t wait to see the first prototypes. (more…)

Your Right to Record Movies Off TV Came 30 Years Ago Today

Your Right to Record Movies Off TV Came 30 Years Ago Today

Today, DRM fears inspire a lot of jokes that reference George Orwell’s 1984. But it was in that titular year, three decades ago today, that the U.S. Supreme Court reached a decision that defined and protected our right to record copyrighted material: Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc., or the Betamax case.

Even BlackBerry Thinks Windows Phone Is Too Small

Screen Shot 2014-01-17 at 2.39.49 PM

News is out today that BlackBerry has no intention of bringing a BlackBerry Messaging (BBM) application to Windows Phone. Comments published in TrustedReviews from the company indicate that it deems Windows Phone too small to warrant the investment. TechCrunch confirmed the statements.

According to TrustedReviews, BlackBerry’s David Proulx called the nonexistence of a BBM application for Windows Phone “entirely market driven,” and stated that the decision is not a “religious thing,” but is instead merely a choice made on the back (lack?) of consumer demand.

So, sorry Windows Phone fans, if you were pining for BBM, you must wait.

Might BlackBerry bring BBM to Windows Phone in the future? Yes, but only once Windows Phone reaches larger scale. In the words of Proulx, “as other platforms emerge, whichever they may be, we will execute on those platforms as well.” The question then becomes whether BlackBerry will still be around by the time that Windows Phone “emerges.”

This is playing as you would expect in the Windows Phone world. WMPowerUser was irked by the shade-tossing, for example:

Blackberry, who clearly has a knack for making friends, has confirmed it has no current interest or plans to bring their BBM app to Windows Phone, citing the size of the Windows Phone market.

Perhaps BlackBerry is saddened by the loss of its rank as the “third” mobile platform.

    President Obama Announces NSA Reforms

President Obama Announces NSA ReformsGiven the hullabaloo over the NSA and their spying programs and tactics, safe to say many, including US citizens and other countries around the world, aren’t too pleased about it. The NSA’s argument is that their actions have been done for the sake of national security, and while that might be true, the methods used has since caused many to evaluate and question the integrity of tech companies and supposedly secure encryption software. In any case the good news is that President Barack Obama has since come forward and announced that there will be reforms made to the NSA, as he had promised he would address earlier this week. Google Safe Browsing Protects Your From 4,195 Sites

This article was written on September 11, 2006 by CyberNet.

Google Safe Browsing Firefox Extension Google has been offering the Safe Browsing Firefox extension for quite some time now and it is something that I install with every Firefox installation that I do. It is nice that the extension will no longer be needed in Firefox 2 because the Safe Browsing feature is going to be built-in.

The extension basically works by comparing the URL of the site you’re visiting to a list of known phishing sites. If a match is found you’ll see a warning similar to the one above. However, most people don’t realize that the extension is protecting you from 4,100+ sites! Don’t believe me? Checkout the list yourself.

Here are a few statistics that I gathered from the 4,195 blocked sites:

    • The word ebay is found 1,835 times.
    • The word paypal is found 1,209 times.
    • The word login is found 1,036 times.
    • The word bank is found 796 times.
    • The word secure is found 404 times.
    • The word chase is found 401 times.

Terrifying video of fearless kids hanging from buildings with one hand

I’ve seen plenty of Russian kids risking their lives walking on top of buildings or hanging from bridges, cranes and buildings. I get nervous just by looking at the photos, but this video compilation actually raised my blood pressure— I felt physically dizzy half-way through it.

    Olympus OMD E-M10 Photos Leaked

Olympus OMD E M10 Photos LeakedWe have been hearing the rumors that Olympus has been working on the OMD E-M10 camera which is said to be announced in the near future, and now thanks to the folks at Digicame-Info, photos of the device have made their way online. Based on what we see, and assuming they are accurate, it looks like the OMD E-M10 will be sharing the same design philosophy of the OMD E-M5, which is one that seems a bit retro/vintage which we’re sure will appeal to some photographers who might be able to appreciate that kind of look.

As for its specs, naturally Olympus has not confirmed anything yet but based on the rumors, the OMD E-M10 will sport an EVF, built-in flash, a 16MP sensor which is the same as the E-M5 but without PDAF, a TruePic VII processor similar to the one found in the E-M1, 3 axis stabilization, and will be launched with a new compact zoom kit lens. In terms of pricing, the rumors are saying that the OMD E-M10 will be priced at around $760 for the body-only, while the version that comes bundled with the kit lens will retail for $900. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but it is possible that the camera will be announced at CP+, so check back with us then for the details.

Bluebird’s BM180 Boots Windows Embedded 8 Handheld And Android

Bluebirds BM180 Boots Windows Embedded 8 Handheld And AndroidAt CES 2014, ASUS announced the Transformer Book Duet which was an interesting device that would run both Windows 8.1 and Android. Well if you’re after something a little similar but perhaps in a smaller form factor,, like a smartphone, Korean manufacturer Bluebird might be a company you’ll want to keep an eye on. The company has recently unveiled their smartphone which is known as the BM180, and what makes it different from normal smartphones is that it runs both Windows and Android. Oddly enough the press release of the device does not mention Android at all, but rather focuses on Windows Embedded 8 Handheld, which is an operating system based on the Windows Phone 8 core.

The exact specs of the BM180 were not mentioned, but Bluebird’s press release did note that the handset was a rugged one designed mainly for enterprise users and that major US retailers were supposedly getting ready to purchase the device and put them up for sale. We have heard the possibility of how Microsoft wouldn’t mind co-existing on a single device that can run both Windows Phone and Android and approached OEMs like Samsung and Huawei about the possibility. Either way we’re not too sure how well-received such a device would be, but it would definitely be interesting. What do you guys think?
