How Isaac Asimov got 2014 both so right and so wrong

Asimov imagined a future exactly like the present for 2014, but with underground cities, moon colonies, and awesome hovercars.

In 1964, legendary writer of science fiction and science fact Isaac Asimov visited the World’s Fair, where a General Electric pavilion chronicling advances in electric appliances inspired him to imagine how that progress might continue into the future. So Asimov sat down and penned his vision of life in the year 2014, 50 years in the future at that point.

Asimov has awed me since I was a small child reading a pop-up book inspired by his work in robotics, but I read this particular essay of his for the first time on my way to the International Consumer Electronics Show this year. There, much like Asimov 50 years ago, I was inspired by all the tech on display to look both back toward Asimov’s heyday and further into the future.

It’s fascinating to note how some of Asimov’s predictions from 1964 are dead-on, while others still seem like absolute fantasies we may not e… [Read more]

Citi To Replace All Debit Cards Affected By Target Hack

Citi To Replace All Debit Cards Affected By Target Hack

By now you have probably heard about the massive Target hack. Personal as well as credit and debit card information of more than 70 million users was stolen as a result of this hack, which took place during the holiday season, a time when customer activity is usually high. Customers who were affected have already been advised to keep an eye on their bank activity and report any anomalies, but as a precautionary measure, Citigroup has announced that it is going to replace all customer debit cards that were affected by the hack.

While the financial juggernaut declined to reveal how many debit cards are being reissued, it did say that they weren’t replaced sooner because Citi wanted to minimize disruptions during the holiday shopping season. JPMorgan has already said that it will reissue new debit cards at many of its branches. It has been reported that Citi does not plan on reissuing credit cards that might have been affected by said hack. On the other hand, Target has announced that it is now offering a year’s worth of credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all affected customers, there’s a three month window to sign up for the free service, which normally costs $191.

LEGO Downton Abby Tells Me All I Need to Know About the Show

I am a sucker for cool LEGO projects. If I see one, you bet I will share. I will share even if I don’t know the show or what it is about. Case in point is this LEGO Downton Abbey build that has recently turned up. All I know about that show I learned while watching Iron Man 3.

I watched the movie Emma in the theater with my wife years and years ago. I still haven’t recovered and shun anything that looks remotely English and romantic. The closest I want to come to an English period costume drama is Game of Thrones.

Regardless, this LEGO Downton Abbey build by Eric Stevens looks pretty neat. The builder of the LEGO Abbey even made the characters from the show in minifig form.

This doesn’t look to be one of the more complex LEGO projects we have seen, though the minifigs look like they required a lot of work. I wonder how long it took him to build the Abbey and the minifigs.

Why Is There a US Naval Cruiser in the Middle of This Cornfield?

If you’re driving along the New Jersey turnpike just outside of Moorsetown and think you see the top of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer peeking above endless rows of corn, miles from the nearest ocean, don’t worry—it’s supposed to be there. It’s just a full-size mock up that Lockheed uses to develop its AEGIS Combat System.
