iPhone Touchscreen Could Be Pressure Sensitive According To Patent Filing

force-patent-displayEarlier today, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published an Apple patent which describes a device that has built-in pressure sensors which will work together in tandem with touchscreen input so that an enhanced user interface navigation experience will happen. It has been described as Apple’s “Gesture and touch input detection through force sensing” patent application, where the nitty gritty boils down to this – a particular device (a future iPhone, we presume) would make use of the standard multitouch display that has a minimum of three force sensors that are located underneath the screen’s surface. Using these pressure-sensitive components around the device’s corners as well as other known areas would allow them to be in a special position of functioning as a secondary mode of input.

The Parce Idea Is A Smart Wall Plug That Can Control Your Appliances From Afar

    20140123070644-03_productshot_us

Another day, another smart home device. Today we introduce the Parce Idea, a clever, compact wall plug that allows you to monitor your energy usage and control lights and appliances from your smartphone. Each plug costs $69 and they connect to your Wi-Fi network and then Parce’s cloud system to show you energy usage, allow you to plan shutdown times, and manage your total electricity usage in the home.

This is obviously not a new idea – WeMo by Belkin is a surprisingly robust system – but the key here are the analytics. As we discussed at CES 2014 this year, we are entering the era of the quantified home. Devices like CubeSensors and Alima add some amazing capabilities to our traditionally dumb spaces while security devices like Canary and energy controllers like Nest keep us safe and warm.

High design and low cost is making relay-powered systems like the Parce easier and easier to make and, although they’re still way below their goal, it’s interesting to see them trying to crack a space that many utilities companies would love to control.

SwiftKey For iOS Launches As A Note Taking App

    swiftkey-for-ios

Android offers users a lot more customization options as opposed to iOS, which is one of the reasons why customers often go for devices running Google’s mobile operating system. On Android, users can choose from a wide variety of custom keyboards if they don’t like the stock offering, whereas on iOS, users don’t enjoy such liberties. SwiftKey happens to be one of the most popular custom keyboards for Android, and today SwiftKey for iOS makes it debut, not as a keyboard that gets baked in but rather as a standalone note taking application.

Alien monsters or awesome spiders, I just love these little guys

Alien monsters or awesome spiders, I just love these little guys

I can’t stop looking at the extraordinary photos by Thomas Shahan, an Oregon-based artist and microphotographer who creates amazing portraits of arthropods, including these awesome jumping spiders. His beautiful monsters don’t make me run in fear, but make me smile (knowing they are tiny, that is.) In fact, some of their faces are hilarious.

Xbox One System Update To Fix Social Features (Rumor)

xboxone-362gbOwners of the Xbox One console, listen up! There might be some good news in store for you, as whispers are going around that the Xbox One console is on its way to receive a significant system update which will address several Xbox Live and interface issues this coming March. Granted, that would be slightly more than a month away if one were to look at the big picture optimistically, and it so happens to be the very same update that was discussed by Microsoft’s Marc Whitten earlier in January. The tipster who shared this particularly juicy bit of information is also touted to be the very same person who dated Forza Horizon 2 for September, Crackdown 3 for 2016 and Halo 2: Anniversary for November 11.
