Watch an ultrasonic array move objects in 3D space (video)

Ultrasonic levitation has been possible for awhile, but it’s not very practical when objects must typically hover along a single axis. University of Tokyo researchers Yoichi Ochiai, Takayuki Hoshi and Jun Rekimoto have cleared this hurdle with an …

Gut feelings? Cold feet? Body maps show where emotions go

Yellow indicates increased sensation, black neutral, and blue decreased sensation.

Have the winter blues got you down? Is a promotion at work making you swell with pride? Does watching kids take “selfies” (and then use the word) elicit contempt?

Chances are, these emotions are making you feel physical sensations in the same parts of your body that others feel them in their bodies, according to new research published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In experiments with 701 participants from Sweden, Finland, and Taiwan, two silhouettes of bodies were paired with facial expressions, stories, emotional words, or movies, and the participants were asked to color the regions of body images where they felt increasing (in yellow) or decreasing (in blue) sensation while viewing the stimuli. Black would indicate no change in sensation.

Hackers Working On Bringing iOS 7 Features To Legacy iDevices

Hackers Working On Bringing iOS 7 Features To Legacy iDevicesWe’re sure there are still plenty of users out there who are using some of Apple’s legacy products, such as second-generation iPhones or iPod touches, devices that unfortunately did not make the cut when it came to updating to any of Apple’s newer iOS updates, such as iOS 7. Unfortunately this is the case of older hardware, whereby the components might not have enough juice to support the newer visuals and features brought about by new software updates. We have seen this happen to computers in the past, so this is really no surprise. The good news is that if you still own said devices and would love to see some iOS 7 features brought to your iPhone or iPod touch, you might be in luck.

This is thanks to a group of hackers called whited00r who have been working to bring some of iOS 7’s features onto older iOS devices. The group has been responsible for the whited00r firmware which is basically a modified version of iOS 3.1.3 that mimics the look of newer iOS updates, and with the release of whited00r 7, the group has released a firmware that has been designed to emulate some of iOS 7’s features and looks, such as an iOS-styled camera app, multitasking view, and even Control Center! Of course your mileage might vary depending on the condition of your device, but individual features can be enabled/disabled if you find that it degrades your device’s performance. For more information about installing the custom firmware, hit up the group’s website for the details.

Nokia Normandy’s Death Has Been “Greatly Exaggerated”

Nokia Normandys Death Has Been Greatly ExaggeratedWe have recently been seeing several leaks of the Nokia Normandy handset which is supposedly Nokia’s attempts at making an Android device. Back then it was rumored that the handset was merely an experiment by Nokia to see what they could build if they were attempting to make an Android device, and that it most likely will not be released anytime soon, especially in face of Microsoft’s acquisition of the company which is expected to close this year. After all with Microsoft promoting Windows Phone, the last thing they’ll want to do is promote a competitor’s product, right? Not to mention the various “Scroogled” campaigns Microsoft has been running as of late.

Well as it turns out perhaps Nokia could still be looking to release the handset because thanks to a tweet by the ever-reliable @evleaks, he wrote that, “The reports of Normandy’s death have been greatly exaggerated.” @evleaks has been known to get most of his leaks correct, save for a one or two misses along the road, but for the most part he has been pretty spot on. This also corroborates earlier rumors that Nokia has decided to put the Normandy up for release, even in face of the deal with Microsoft. Assuming this is true, there’s no telling when Nokia would make such an announcement, but what do you guys think? Would you be interested in a Nokia Android device?

Nokia Thinks HTC’s New Year Resolution Should Be To Stop Infringing On Patents

Nokia Thinks HTCs New Year Resolution Should Be To Stop Infringing On PatentsAs you might have heard, Nokia has recently won a series of legal battles against HTC in which several of HTC’s products have since been banned from being sold and had to be taken off the shelves of retailers. Nokia has never been shy about making jibes about their competitors, as we have seen in the past from several of Nokia’s advertisements, and this time it is no different. In a statement released by the Finnish company over their latest win in Germany, Nokia was pretty much all business about how they were pleased with the results of the courts which basically ruled in their favor, only to end with a humored jab at HTC, stating, “HTC’s first New Year’s resolution for 2014 should be to stop this free riding and compete fairly in the market.”

Over the past couple of months and years, we have seen huge tech companies battle it out against one another in the courtrooms. The notable is probably the Apple vs. Samsung case which is still ongoing. We had also recently heard how Google had filed a complaint against the Rockstar patent consortium (owned by companies such as Apple and Microsoft) essentially likening them to the patent trolls that we have seen in the past. Will 2014 be any different in terms of legal battles? We doubt it, if anything the competition is just getting stiffer and we would be surprised if it were anything less.

Canadian Company Builds A Truck Made Out Of Ice (And It Works!)

So the other day we reported on a car built out of LEGO parts that actually worked, which we have to admit is pretty damn cool, and speaking of cool, how about a truck completely made out of ice? Well maybe not completely as the wheels and engine are still the same, but the top part of the truck’s chassis is built from ice blocks that have been cut and sculpted to resemble a truck! The details and shape alone would have made it pretty awesome as a ice sculpture but the fact that it works and actually runs makes it even cooler! The video was put together by a Canadian company boasting about its battery which remains operable even in extreme temperatures, and what better way to test it out then sticking it in a truck made of ice, right? Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo Could Be The Retail Name Of The Galaxy Grand Lite

Samsung Galaxy Grand Neo Could Be The Retail Name Of The Galaxy Grand LiteA couple of days ago we reported that a certain Samsung Galaxy Grand Lite had passed through the FCC. We have been hearing about this rumored handset for a while now, with the device speculated to be the slightly less powerful version of the Galaxy Grand 2 that was launched in South Korea. Well now according to new reports, we are hearing that the Galaxy Grand Lite could actually be known as the Galaxy Grand Neo upon its official release. Granted the Galaxy Grand Lite name was only speculated and for all we know it could have been a codename, or maybe Samsung wanted to jazz it up a bit, who knows?

In any case the specs of the Galaxy Grand Neo appear to be the same as what we have been hearing from before, so it looks like the only changes made are to its name, for now. As a quick recap for those who might have forgotten, the rumored specs of the upcoming handset includes a 5” 480×800 display along with a 1.2GHz quad-core processor. It will also be accompanied by 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera, and a 2,100mAh battery. Not the most powerful specs but we can also assume it will not be breaking the bank anytime soon. Still no word on a launch date but with CES 2014 around the corner, perhaps we will learn more then.

Snapchat Hacked: 4.6 Million User Names And Phone Numbers Stolen

Snapchat Hacked: 4.6 Million User Names And Phone Numbers StolenOne of the perks of Snapchat is how the media you send over gets deleted after a short period of time, meaning that you can rest assured that anything private you send will not be permanent. Unfortunately it seems that it was recently that Snapchat has experienced a security breach whereby they have managed to get ahold of Snapchat’s 4.6 million usernames and phone numbers and have posted it as a downloadable database a few days ago, although at this time of posting the website appears to have been suspended. Ironically enough Snapchat was alerted to several exploits by a security group called Gibson Security, but released a statement in which they claimed to have safeguards in place.

As it stands the hackers have blurred out the last two digits of each user’s phone number and have indicated that they might be willing to turn the data over to the right party, although it seems that their motives were just to let raise public awareness. According to the anonymous group of hackers, “Our motivation behind the release was to raise the public awareness around the issue, and also put public pressure on Snapchat to get this exploit fixed. It is understandable that tech startups have limited resources but security and privacy should not be a secondary goal. Security matters as much as user experience does. The company was too reluctant at patching the exploit until they knew it was too late and companies that we trust with our information should be more careful when dealing with it.”
