Eye-Fi Brings Us a Wi-Fi Enabled SD Memory Card

This article was written on June 12, 2007 by CyberNet.

EyefiHow often do you take a bunch of pictures and then forget to upload them to your computer? Or, how often do you take pictures and promise to share them with others, only to forget? It happens, and one start-up out of Mountain-View California called Eye-Fi is hoping to provide an easy way for you to auto-upload your photos to your computer or photo sharing site through the use of a Wi-Fi enabled SD card with built-in memory.

Sure, there are Wi-Fi equipped cameras available on the market, but they are a bit on the pricey side.  Through the use of en Eye-Fi SD memory card, you’d be able to choose to send the photos to your computer or favorite photo sharing site as they’re taken, or at the end of a photos session.

While we tend to take more pictures these days, sometimes it takes a while before those pictures make it off of the camera and on to the computer.  With Eye-Fi, all you’d have to do is turn the camera on and let the software do the rest of the work for you. Currently, they’re working to secure partnerships with more than 20 web photo service providers and social networks which would make the sharing process even easier.

According to Eye-Fi, four out of five digital photos are never printed or shared because of the complex process required. If you’re one of those who tends to take the pictures and then just forget about them, would Eye-Fi be something that you’d consider using?

One of my first thoughts after I thought about how cool it would be to have my pictures instantly uploaded to my computer, was battery-life. I wasn’t sure how the Wi-Fi would affect the longevity of the battery, however after reading into it, they explain that the network functions are off when photos aren’t being sent, thus saving on battery.

Hopefully it’s not too good to be true because this is something that could really change the way we take and share photos, and it’s reasonably priced.  Eye-Fi is scheduled to debut in the Fall as a 2GB card priced at around $100.

YouTube comments become a hilarious YouTube movie

Sometimes we say things without thinking.

Then there are the times when we say things without saying anything at all.

But there are also the willfully aggressive types who steam into comments sections in order to enjoy their own particular form of Fight Club.

The problem with these so-called troll types is that their discourse doesn’t always rise to the level of minimal grace or education. Instead, there’s rabid invective, with spellings from the time of Chaucer. If you’re lucky.

Thankfully, the lighthearted souls at Dead Parrot decided they would immortalize some of the more memorable comment exchanges on YouTube, by turning them into movies.

One of the best features an exchange beneath a video entitled “Soccer Player Accidentally Slaps a Referee’s Boob.”

The two commenters enjoy the handles “Ivy Kenso” and “ShortShortDI.”

In choosing actors with expressive English voices, true gravitas is lent to what might at first seem like banal words.

Kids play with gadgets more than toys, study says

Educational?

Why bother twisting real, plastic arms when you can play twisting games on an iPhone?

What’s the point of unpacking a board game when you can alleviate boredom instantly on an iPad?

Kids, you see, don’t need the hassle. They just want instant gratification. Yes, they’re little adults.

A study performed by child-education specialists the Michael Cohen Group, suggests that touch screens have overtaken all other forms of playful delight for kids.

The research, which examined the world of Digital Kids, shows that more than 60 percent of parents say their kids aged 12 and under play on touch screens “often.” And 38 percent apparently play “very often.”

Could it be that at least 15 percent don’t talk to their parents at all?

These figures put the gadgets ahead of mainstay toys such as dolls, action figures, puzzles, and board games. Even construction and blocks — that would mean Lego and the like — are far behind.

Welcome to the new world of play.

Michael Cohen, who led the research, … [Read more]

Nokia Treasure Tags Keep Track of Your Stuff

Nokia has rolled out a new product that will launch in April called Treasure Tag. The Nokia Treasure Tag is a small square device that is designed to be attached to your belongings to help you keep track of them. This might be the perfect thing for those that tend to lose their keys or bag all the time.

When you walk away with your smartphone and leave your keys on the counter, the Treasure Tags will produce an audible tone. If you take the keys and leave the smartphone, the alarm will sound. The idea is that the sound will remind you to grab up all your belongings and help you find them.

The tags sync via NFC and Bluetooth to your mobile device. The Treasure Tag is 30 x 30 x 10mm, making it about half the size of a matchbox. Each one weighs just 13 grams, so you won’t even notice it inside your bag or on your keys. Battery life for each Treasure Tag is about six months, and they can be replaced with an inexpensive CR-2032 coin cell battery.

Out of the box, the Treasure Tag integrates with Nokia phones running Windows Phone for the OS. The tags will also be supported via a third-party app for iPhone and Android users. The apps will support up to four tags at once and each tag will cost about $30(USD).

The Inside Story of How Olympic Timekeeping Is So Amazingly Precise

Three one-thousandths of a second is less than 1/10th of a blink, less than 1/100th of a heartbeat. But if you’re a speedskater, 0.003 seconds can be the difference between gold and silver. So how are Olympics timekeepers able to get such ridiculous precision and accuracy? For the inside scoop, we talked to Omega’s Peter Hürzeler, head of Olympic timekeeping.

Rapid Heating Wood Burning Pizza Oven makes outdoor picnics fun

rapid-wood-fire-pizza-ovenI don’t know about you, but I for one absolutely love to have my food piping hot. As in really, really hot, fresh out of the oven or the wok, depending on which particular cuisine that you are fond of. Picnics can be fun, especially when the weather is absolutely beautiful and you have prepared a fair bit of food to share with your loved one(s). The thing is, the food that you bring to picnics are more often than not no longer fresh as though it was just fixed or cooked in the kitchen, so cold sandwiches and the ilk tend to be the food of choice for many. What if I were to tell you that it is possible to bake your own pizza in the woods?

This is what the $2,700 Rapid Heating Wood Burning Pizza Oven is all about. Handcrafted in Marche, Italy, the Rapid Heating Wood Burning Pizza Oven is an outdoor wood-burning oven which can be ready to cook in a matter of just 15 minutes. It will be different from other typical wood burning ovens which require hours of preheating, as this superior oven’s whole cooking chamber has been insulated with basalt, which is a dense, volcanic rock that retains 10 times additional heat compared to the clay or brick that is used in traditional ovens. The oven itself will heat up to 800° F while the domed cooking chamber will result in a natural convection which circulates heat evenly, so that one can cook Neapolitan-style pizza in a matter of three minutes. Now this is pretty neat, don’t you think so?
