The only thing cooler than using a huge robot arm to sculpt? Using a huge robot arm to sculpt with liquid hot metal. Joris Laarman Studio‘s prototype software instructs a robotic arm to recreate 3D models in midair, using molten metals of all kinds. It looks as cool as it sounds.
The Geeksphone Revolution Goes On Sale, Letting You Dual-Boot To Android And Firefox OS
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe mobile market may still essentially be a two horse race, with Android and iOS enjoying a significant lead, but there are lots of upstarts trying to make inroads, too. One of those is Firefox OS, Mozilla’s attempt to bring a web-first focus to smartphones. Geeksphone has been an early Firefox OS hardware supporter, and now it has put the Revolution up for sale, a higher-end device than its earlier efforts, complete with the ability to dual-boot to both Android and Firefox OS out of the box.
If you’re used to working in a corporate environment but also being cool during evenings and weekends, then you might be familiar with dual-booting: I’ve been known to have my Macs run Windows on a Boot Camp partition for when I need to pierce the veil and travel to the Microsoft realm. It’s actually a pretty common scenario in desktop computing, and there are a number of products including virtualization software designed to facilitate it. But is there the same kind of utility in the mobile world?
Firefox OS is definitely still an outlier when it comes to the mobile platform landscape, and as such, there’s very little in terms of pressing reasons to have it as an option. That said, the eternally curious and those who sympathize with Mozilla’s approach to software, open source and the web will probably find plenty to love about Firefox OS on a device with decent mid-range specs (it appears mostly on lower-end hardware, in keeping with Mozilla’s target market for the OS).
Specs for the phone include a dual-core Intel Atom processor at 1.6GHz, as well as HSDPA cellular support, and an 8 megapixel rear camera with a 1.3 megapixel front shooter. The Revolution retails for €222, and is sold direct from the Geeksphone website. Shipments start going out March 4, so eager shoppers won’t have to wait long before they start acting like mobile chameleons.
Shooting Challenge: Panoramas
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt’s hard to take an enchanting photo. But it’s even harder to take an enchanting photo that’s 3x or more the normal length. So for this week’s Shooting Challenge, we’re going wide. We’re going panoramic.
Finally, an actual use for a selfie

It was a small step for mankind to go from self-love to selfie-love.
With its eyes prised wide by the sight of a camera on a phone, humanity suddenly realized it could not only record itself, but send the evidence to everyone who wasn’t interested.
In the end, though, selfies were all about you. Until now. For along has come a company called TicketLeap to introduce a radical use for the selfie.
It’s called the Selfie Ticket. And its purpose is to replace the QR code on event tickets with an image of you.
Yes, now beauty can be in the eye of the ticket holder.
I confess I saw no obvious advantage in seeing my own image instead of a QR code. So I asked TicketLeap’s CEO Tim Raybould to explain himself(ie).
“Don’t picture getting into a Yankees game,” he began. Why would I picture that? Going to see the Yankees is like having a crown inserted without laughing gas, while seated on a pin cushion.
He continued: “Picture going to a 50-person smoked-BBQ event hosted by your favorite local brewery. That brewery is throwing the event to make a connection with the event goers.”
Oh, so it’s all about the connection thing? It’s that modern, social networking, we-all-love-each other-really thing? Indeed it is.

NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 Introduced

With a starting price of $299, the Tegra Note 7 LTE looks like a great option for those who seek an always-connected tablet with enough muscle to run the most demanding games (with game controller support as well). Incidentally, it has a good stylus too. (more…)

Redditor tabres gets my vote for coolest uncle on the planet. Now it’s up to you other uncles to outdo him. This guy built his nephew a custom Ghostbusters Ecto-1 Cozy Coupe. It has flashing lights and a license plate and is everything a young Ghostbuster could want.
This kid is going to have some amazing adventures riding in this thing. Maybe this guy can build the kid a miniature Ghostbusters HQ next and get some neighbor kids to make up a new Ghostbusting team.
If you too want to be a good Uncle, you can make one of these yourself thanks to this full tutorial over at Imgur.

On April 8th, the New York City branch of Bonhams will be hosting a "Space History" auction, and Gizmodo has been given a preview of the some of the historically unique, space age artifacts that will be for sale. From full-body Soviet space suits to a control panel once used on the space station Mir, the range of objects is pretty extraordinary; earlier space history-themed auctions at Bonhams have even included Neil Armstrong’s own flight notes taken to the surface of the moon.

We're all waiting for the first official glimpse of the S5.

Few things in the smartphone realm can rival the madness around a new iPhone announcement, but the arrival of a new Galaxy definitely is a contender. Samsung has invited journalists to a Monday shindig at Mobile World Congress at which it’s expected to spill the details on the upcoming Galaxy S5.
You can follow the proceedings on CNET’s live blog and expect to get answers to pressing questions like whether it will have a fingerprint sensor and if it will come with a premium metal case option.
The actual release date for the smartphone is still up in the air. Reports are all over the map. Some sources say it’s just a few weeks away, while others are less optimistic, saying it may take all the way until the end of March before it’s out.
Some Galaxy fans don’t need the announcement to make up their minds. Some are sure they’re going to get that phone when it comes out. Others migh… [Read more]
