Cool People Play Their Music With An Electric Plasma Spark, Not A Normal Speaker

How do you listen to your music? Headphones you say? Sometimes on an Airplay or Bluetooth speaker? Oh. That’s pretty cool. I just listen to mine on plasma. Dancing electrical sparks that leap between two electrodes and produce a small amount of ozone. No big deal. Just, you know, how cool people do. Actually that’s not how I listen to music, but it could be if I back the ARC Plasma… Read More

Pipe Crawling Underwater X-Ray Machines Find Leaks Before They Happen

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, but when it comes to an underwater pipeline carrying oil or natural gas, staying ahead of leaks can actually help prevent a billion dollar cleanup. So researchers at GE are developing an underwater submersible that uses X-rays to check pipelines for signs of corrosion and deterioration before something catastrophic happens.

Whistle, the Fitbit for dogs, makes push into mainstream

Surrounded by hundreds of miles of icy water, Tina Haskins still found a way to connect with her dog, Kona, who was thousands of miles away back home in New Jersey.

A marine scientist conducting research on plankton in Antarctica, Haskins used an app to track the activities of Kona, a blue-eyed Australian Shepherd, throughout the day.

In this case, the app syncs with the Whistle device, a small, coin-shaped wireless tracker that attaches to a dog’s collar. Whistle tracks Kona’s movements as well as her location, and Haskins’ friend, Kona’s temporary caretaker, posts photos of Kona and updates of his activities on the app.

“Every morning, every night, or whenever I’m missing him, I can pull up my Whistle app and see what he’s up to,” she said during a phone interview with CNET.

It’s one of the more colorful instances among Whistle’s users and while it illustrates how Whistle is effective when helping owners feel connected to their pets, it doesn’t show the real magic behind Whistle. Haskins said the big value for her is in the data Whistle gathers. It’s the key to establishing a baseline of data for Kona’s health, something that would be difficult to determine otherwise, given that she doesn’t know everything ab… [Read more]

Uh-oh, this computer virus can spread via Wi-Fi

(Credit: University of Liverpool)

British researchers have created a computer virus that they say is the first to spread like a real airborne contagion.

Chameleon can spread through densely populated areas like the common cold, the University of Liverpool researchers claim, by hopping from network to network via access points, spreading rapidly among homes and businesses. If as that wasn’t bad enough, the virus can avoid detection and identify weak wireless access points — those that are least protected by encryption and passwords.

“Wi-Fi connections are increasingly a target for computer hackers because of well-documented security vulnerabilities, which make it difficult to detect and defend against a virus,” said Alan Marshall, a professor of network security at the school. “It was assumed, however, that it wasn’t possible to develop a virus that could attack Wi-Fi networks; but we demonstrated that this is possible and that it can spread quickly. We are now able to use the data generated from this study to develop a new technique to identify when an attack is likely.”
