Polar bears may not have much use for pavement, but that didn’t stop Google Maps’ Street View from getting very up close and personal with the elusive Ursus maritimus.

In honor of International Polar Bear Day, Google released on Thursday its first Street View maps of a remote area of Canada’s tundra. In capturing images of polar bears in and around the town of Churchill, Manitoba, Google has created a “baseline record for imagery associated with geospatial data,” Krista Wright, executive director of the conservation group Polar Bears International, wrote in a guest blog for Google.

MasterCard To Use Smartphone Location To Prevent Credit Card Fraud

MasterCard To Use Smartphone Location To Prevent Credit Card FraudHave you ever experienced the situation when you are overseas and you’re trying to buy something with your credit card, only to have the sale rejected, or worse, have your credit card blocked entirely because your bank thinks that your card is being used without your knowledge?

To be fair, banks do that as a safety measure. After all no one likes dealing with an irate customer demanding to know why their credit card which might be based in the US, is suddenly spending thousands of dollars all the way in another country halfway around the world. This is also why sometimes banks ask if you’re traveling, which countries you’re traveling to, and what are your travel dates, so that they know that your card usage in that period is more or less legitimate.

However it seems that MasterCard wants to take things to the next level and save you a phone call simply by getting customers to opt into a program in which your location and your credit card are tied together via your smartphone. (more…)

Peter Molyneux Thinks The Free-To-Play Model Needs To Go

Peter Molyneux Thinks The Free To Play Model Needs To GoThe free-to-play model is a model that many developers have chosen to adopt these days for their games. It basically makes a game free for download, but at the same time monetizes by charging gamers for in-app purchases. It is a good way to get gamers to try the game and at the same time potentially making a lot more from it.

Naturally this is not a model that gamers particularly enjoy, especially since sometimes the progress of a game is hindered due to the fact that they need to purchase certain items to help them pass a difficult level, or in some cases, pay to pass the level entirely. That being said, Dungeon Keeper and Fable’s creator, Peter Molyneux, has recently expressed his distaste for the model. (more…)

CyberNet Server Hits 6-Months of Uptime :-)

This article was written on January 14, 2008 by CyberNet.

Datacenter Monkey We thought that today would be a good time to express our thanks to the machine that delivers CyberNet to readers around the world. Our Xeon-powered server runs Fedora Core 5, and it’s had an incredible uptime of over 6 months.  I’m sure it would be even higher than that right now, but I used to restart it once a week to help ensure that things would flow smoothly. Eventually I just gave up on that.

Smiley CoolThanks to hard working men, women, and monkeys like George (pictured above) we’ve been able to deliver CyberNet to readers just like you on a daily basis. So join me in showing some gratitude for the hard working machines that clog the tubes with useless information each and everyday!

I see it as impressive that a server can stay running for over 6 months without a single hiccup. For those of you keeping a scrapbook of CyberNet’s history, here’s a picture you can add to it:

    Server Uptime

Now on to bigger and better things…one year of uptime here we come!

Fable Creator Calls The Wii U Awkward And Clumsy

Fable Creator Calls The Wii U Awkward And Clumsyu revPeter Molyneux has never been shy or one to keep his opinions to himself. Wii U Lifetime Sales In Japan Overtakes The Xbox 360

Wii U Lifetime Sales In Japan Overtakes The Xbox 360Nintendo’s Wii U console can hardly be considered the hottest selling console at the moment. In fact we’d be surprised if Nintendo were to ever nab that title one day. Perhaps it is the lack of titles, and perhaps it is the slow releases of first-party titles, but whatever the case is, the console is definitely not on the same level as the PS4 or the Xbox One.

The good news is that while the console will not be overtaking Sony or Microsoft’s next-gen consoles, we guess Nintendo fans can take solace in knowing that as far as prev-gen consoles are concerned, like the Xbox 360, it turns out that the Wii U’s lifetime sales has managed to overtake that of the Xbox 360’s in Japan. Nintendo Investor Implores The Company To Release Games For Mobile

Nintendo Investor Implores The Company To Release Games For MobileNintendo’s refusal to release games for mobile devices is almost legendary. Despite proof that such a move would be great for the company, and demand from gamers for the company to release their games for smartphones and markets, Nintendo has refused to budge. In fact the closest thing Nintendo will do is release an app but not games.

To that extent Hong Kong hedge fund manager, Seth Fischer, has once again implored Nintendo to consider making that move to mobile. Heck, Fischer goes as far as telling Nintendo that if they do go mobile, they should go the free-to-play route which he believes will result in very profitable games. (more…)
