URB-E makes commuting seem like fun!

URB-E
When we were younger, going out to play was anything from playing make believe to riding your bike for hours with no particular destination. Now the main reasons we’ll trek outside is because we’re headed to work, or are doing some regimen of exercise. The least exciting of those is the former, as your destination is not particularly fun, and the trip there is not that exciting.

If you walk any portion of your travels to work and wish you didn’t have to overextend yourself, then something like the URB-E might help. This is an extremely compact e-vehicle that will allow you to scoot along at up to 15 miles per hour. If you need to get on the bus or take a cab for a portion of your commute, then this can fold up and fit between your legs. Its ability to decrease in size will also allow you to take it into work and store it discreetly.

This will be able to go about 20 miles on one charge, and even has a spot for your bag to be placed while in transit. If you forgot to plug in your smartphone or tablet the night before, this also has a dock so you can juice up on the go. There is a corresponding app for iOS and Android that will allow you to check on your battery usage, speed, range, and control your lighting or music. This will cost around $300 if you want to pre-order (pay more in the future, but lock in the Kickstarter pricing), or $800-1600 for the whole kit and caboodle.

Edit: I was wrong about the pricing, and it has been corrected!

Available for crowdfunding on Indiegogo

Dainese D-Air Ski Could Protect Skiers From Serious Injuries

Dainese D Air Ski Could Protect Skiers From Serious InjuriesDo not for once think that the sport of skiing is full of fun and glamor – there are also inherent risks involved, as the legendary Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher found out at the end of last year. Lose your concentration one bit, a little mistake there, and you could end up seriously injured. Perhaps it is imperative that the likes of the Dainese D-Air Ski would be released to the masses as soon as possible in order to cut out unwanted injuries or even death. The Dainese D-Air Ski’s near-competition-ready prototype will rely on a bunch of sensors that will be able to know when it is involved in a crash, where it will then rapidly inflate around the skier’s upper body so that there will be adequate protection afforded.

Dainese has teamed up with the International Ski Federation (FIS) three years back with the vision of adapting its motorcycle airbag protection technology to cater for the sport of ski racing. The entire process would require plenty of data collection so that the new algorithm can be created, and one which is reliable enough to work all the time when required. We do look forward to the day when the Dainese D-Air Ski is made a mandatory accessory for all skiers.

Ubuntu Phones Will Hit The Market This Fall

Canonical tried to enter the smartphone game by building its very own phone, the Ubuntu Edge, but unfortunately that project failed to kick off due to insufficient crowdfunding. Since then the company has been perfecting Ubuntu OS for phones and has even released test builds for Nexus devices. Canonical has already revealed plans of teaming up with OEMs to bring Ubuntu phones to the market, now the CEO has confirmed that the first phones will go on sale this fall.

The World’s Only Self-Righting Object does have a presence on your desk

self-righting-objectI don’t know about you, but I am quite sure that folks who actually lay their eyes upon the $499.95 World’s Only Self-Righting Object would most probably think that this is nothing but a waste of money. After all, why bother with this “high tech paperweight” as some might call it? Well, before we jump into any hasty conclusions as to what this particular device could be, let us take a closer look at it. Known as the Gömböc, it has been touted to be the world’s only homogenous, convex, self-righting object. It will be different from all of the other inhomogeneous self-righting novelties that come with weighted bases, as the Gömböc itself will be made of solid stainless steel. The secret in remaining self-righting all the time? It will rely solely upon its unique curvilinear surface so that it can always achieve equilibrium regardless of its starting position.

Since it is totally convex, which means that every single point on its surface will bulge outward, this would make it similar in geometry to the shell of the radiated tortoise (Astrochelys radiata), where the animal can self-right itself without having to make any use of its limbs. This is a mathematical impossibility in two dimensions, and the Gömböc barely exists in three-dimensional space, functioning as a precise representation of minimal flatness and thinness. Truly, this is an enigma worth picking up.

Google Now Launcher Makes It To The Play Store

Google Now Launcher Makes It To The Play Store

With the Nexus 5, Google debuted a new software feature that was referred to back then as the Google Experience Launcher. Its more commonly known as the Google Now launcher, it lets users say “Okay, Google” to initiate a search from any home screen. Initially this was only limited to the Nexus 5, and though people found ways to get it on their other Nexus devices via leaks and unofficial releases, the internet search giant itself has now finally released the launcher as a standalone app in the Google Play Store.
