Microsoft Could Have Been ‘More Clear’ About Xbox One Always-On Policies

Microsoft Could Have Been More Clear About Xbox One Always On Policies

Last year, following its announcement that the Xbox One would require an internet connection at all times, Microsoft received much criticism. There was actually quite a lot of debate on this matter, but the majority seemed to be leaning towards removal of the always-on policy. After a few months Microsoft rolled back the Xbox One always-on policy. The console came out in November last year and has since then been doing well in the market, contrary to popular belief that the debacle would end up hurting its sales.

Apple Spotify Rival Release Possible [Report]

Apple Spotify Rival Release Possible [Report]

Before Apple launched iTunes Radio, word on the street was that the company was working on a Pandora killer. iTunes Radio was launched late last year and it has grown substantially since then. If latest rumors are true, Apple may be turning its focus towards an on-demand streaming service. That would essentially be an Apple Spotify rival, and apparently the company has already opened up “exploratory talks” with senior music label executives.

    12-Inch MacBook Rumored Once Again

12 Inch MacBook Rumored Once Again

It has been a while since Apple shook up its notebook lineup. For the past couple of years majority of the changes in the new models have been made under the hood. That is to say Apple hasn’t made any radical design changes or introduced any new display sizes. Though since last year a rumor has been going around predicting the launch of a new 12-inch MacBook. Its unclear in which particular lineup this product will land, the Air or the Pro, but according to latest rumors coming out of China, the 12-inch MacBook might be released in the coming months.

LifePrint Wireless Photo Printer Lets You Share Photos Online and Offline

Many of us stock our photos only as digital copies, but a new company called LifePrint might get you back to printing photographs. The company’s eponymous device lets you print photos wirelessly wherever you are and makes it easy to share photos with other LifePrint users.

    lifeprint wireless photo printer 620x527magnify

The printer works with iOS and Android devices and makes 3″ x 4″ photographs. You can print any image that’s on your camera roll to LifePrint, which means you can print the images you edited or downloaded from various apps. You can send photos to the printer over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or even a data connection through the LifePrint app.

For example, you can take a picture while you’re out and have a print waiting for you when you get home, or even have someone abroad within print your photo within a few seconds of capturing it. Couple that wireless capability with the printer’s battery – it can print up to 30 photos per charge – and you can even set up a mobile photo booth.

You can emulate LifePrint’s wireless features with a modern printer, a router and a bit of programming. But what makes LifePrint more convenient is the social network feature of its mobile app. It behaves much like Instagram where you can follow other users, except with LifePrint you can add the images of the people you follow to your printing queue. It’s a shame LifePrint can’t print out larger photos, because otherwise it would be a great way for artists and photographers to send free posters to their followers.

Thankfully, the LifePrint app lets you reject the photos shared by the people in your network without informing them of the rejection. You can also keep to yourself and stay out of LifePrint’s social network.

Take a photo of your browser’s lunch, apply some filters, and pledge at least $99 (USD) on Kickstarter to get a LifePrint printer as a reward. LifePrint will sell film packs in three variants: 10 prints for $20, 30 for $20 and 100 for $50. Shipping will be free for the $50 pack. A lot of consumers might be turned off by the price of the film, but I say that’s a plus. It’ll force them to think hard about the pictures they want to print. And it will give you a good alibi when your friends start asking why you didn’t print the selfies they sent you.

Comcast Throttles Torrent Downloads – Workarounds Revealed

This article was written on October 22, 2007 by CyberNet.

comcast throttling downloads Comcast is quickly gaining enemies from the BitTorrent crowd by using new technology to throttle torrent downloads.  The Associated Press was able to confirm that they are in fact doing this through tests all over the nation.  In their report they say that this move is “the most drastic example yet of data discrimination by a U.S. Internet service provider.” Luckily, there are some workarounds available that TorretFreak writes about which we’ll be taking a look at in just a minute.

This isn’t the first time that Comcast was accused of decreasing speeds or even cutting off BitTorrent transfers. They previously denied these accusations back in August, but this time around once the AP investigated, they admitted they were using an application to break every seed connection to “ensure all our customers have the best broadband experience possible.” Comcast’s spokesman Charlie Douglas said, “This means we use the latest technologies to mange our network to provide a quality experience for all Comcast subscribers.” And of course, because it is their network, they can do what they want and what they feel is necessary.

For those you who subscribe to Comcast’s Internet service and use BitTorrent networks, you really have two options: switch to a different ISP, or find a workaround. As mentioned, TorrentFreak has put together a list of what’s working to get around this and what’s not working so that you know what’s worth trying. One such suggestion is to run BitTorrent over encrypted tunnels like SSH or VPN, or even forcing protocol header encryption. They also advise to play around with the different options mentioned because while one solution may work for you, it may not work for someone else. What they say is not working is to “grab a hammer, visit the Comcast office, smash a keyboard and knock over a monitor” as one 75 year old woman recently did in Chicago. 🙂

There’s some good news and some bad to come from this is. The good is that  Comcast is the only known ISP throttling downloads.  The bad news is that others may follow in Comcast’s steps and try to implement technology to do the same. Fortunately there’s some more good news though, and that is that Comcast is paying big bucks for this technology. Given that they’re the largest Cable TV and Internet provider in the U.S. with 12.4 million subscribers, they’ve got the money to do this. Other companies, well, they just won’t have the money to spend trying to stop subscribers from using Torrent networks. From the sounds of it, instead of trying a workaround, you’re just better off ditching Comcast and moving on to a new provider.

    Thanks for the tip Cory!
