Food-gnashing compost container tops Grommet awards

Grind your way through your food scraps.

(Credit: Ecotonix)

The Ecotonix Green Cycler is a compost container for a new age. It doesn’t just sit around in your kitchen, silently holding your vegetable scraps. It takes those scraps and eats them up, grinding them into little bits for faster, more convenient composting in your compost bin. The Green Cycler was just honored as a winner of product-launch platform The Grommet’s product-pitch showdown, taking top honors in the ready-for-market category.

The $99 Green Cycler first launched in 2012 and has gone through some updates since then. It features a crank-powered set of shredder blades that grind food waste down into a size that composts much more quickly than big chunks.

The Öko Odyssey is a water bottle that is all work and no play

odyssey-new
Having a water bottle around is nice for day-to-day beverage needs. It negates the need to use a cup which may have questionable origins when you are in need of a drink. Of course, when you’re out in the wilds, you’re going to need more than a place to stow water.

Most sources of good ole H2O outside aren’t exactly safe to drink from directly. You need a way to filter out any of the bad junk that’s floating around in there. The  Öko Odyssey will do that and much, much more. This is a multi-function water bottle that will not only give you two different filtration options, but also give you a flashlight adapter which can be used as a lantern, and a cup that can store 8fl. oz. of whatever you need to keep in there.

The level 1 filter is meant mainly to take out chlorine, bad taste, or color, and the level 2 should work in over 140 countries. The latter was designed for use in NASA space stations, so you can imagine that this version would be meant for trips in the outdoors. The flashlight adapter can be screwed on to be used as a torch, or flipped, which will make your water bottle into a lantern. There is a strobe mode available which can be used in emergencies if need be, and it has a built-in loop so it can be hung or tied up. This will cost you around $50 should you be interested.

Acer Iconia W4 review: a big upgrade to a small Windows tablet

Acer’s Iconia W3 wasn’t quite the best introduction to 8-inch Windows tablets; we liked it, but its subpar display and modest performance kept it from being stellar. Give credit to the company for quickly learning from its mistakes, though. Less than…

The Web out-Picassos itself: Welcome, sticky tape selfies

Gorgeous.

(Credit: News.com.au/Twitter)

Your 3-year-old nephew loves to pull faces, doesn’t he?

And he loves it when you pull faces too? In fact, you can spend whole hours just pulling faces at each other and laughing.

You’re familiar, by now, with the fact that the Web is largely populated by 3-year-olds. It was only a matter of time and brain-sparking, therefore, before pulling faces captured the virtual world.

New, bright, spark-filled hashtags such as #sellotapeselfie or simply #sellotape don’t merely contain faces pulled by natural means. No, they involve wrapping sticky tape around your head and seeing just how close to a Picasso you look.

Local Alarm System – Neighborhood Watch in an App

screen568x568

Some communities have a neighborhood watch, and I like that idea. There is something to be said about knowing there are people, awake and alert, that care about you, your home, your town. I’d like to see the concept taken up a notch, I’d like to know when there’s an accident clogging up my way to work, or that a break-in has occurred at a business in town… that would be some good information to have.

So check out Local Alarm System (LAS),  a brand new app that can help increase the safety in your neighborhood in a quick and easy way. You simply need to download the LAS app, and then invite your friends and neighbors to join your group and, if an emergency occurs, LAS allows them to inform the entire neighborhood with just the press of a few buttons.

If something happens, press the relevant alarm button, indicate the group you want to inform, and indicate where the danger is. Everyone in the group will automatically receive a push message telling them what is going on, then, the alarmed members of the group can respond easily through another push message.

LAS can also be of great value for shopping centers, store owners, parks, beaches, first aid posts at fairs and festivals or other special events etc. to inform the right people within seconds, about burglary, fire, casualties or just about any unsafe situations. Of course, for all emergencies; first call 911, then, use LAS for immediate assistance from your vicinity.

If you would like to sleep a little easier, and be informed about what’s going on around town in real time…head on over to the Appstore or Google Play for your download, or visit lokaalalarmsysteem.nl for videos and more information.
