The Web at 25: How it won the White House — and won me back

On assignment.

This week I’ve been celebrating 25 years of the Web by retracing my own life, lived largely online, from the Web’s early years to the dot-com boom and bust to the slow emergence of Web 2.0, which I largely missed while in self-imposed digital exile in Alaska. In the final installment today I look at how I came back to the Web just in time for things to get really good.

Look through my author’s profile here at CNET and you might notice that I’m a bit obsessed with following the latest developments in the mobile world, from even the most hopeful iPhone rumors to torture-testing ruggedized Android phones. But back in January of 2007 when the first iPhone was introduced, arguably kicking off the global smartphone craze and eventually helping to push the mobile Web into the mainst… [Read more]

Target Hack Reportedly Detected By Its System But Went Ignored

In December word broke that Target was the subject of a massive security breach. Personal information of more than 70 million of Target’s customers went into hackers’ hands. The retailer has tried to offer an olive branch and has been on damage control mode ever since. A new report claims that Target’s sophisticated security system had actually detected the attack. All warnings went ignored.

Forget planking, #whaling is the hot new Vine trend

The gadget-toting subpopulation of the human race can’t go for long without developing a new visual meme that spreads like an iPhone rumor. The most recent craze is cropping up on Vine, and it’s called whaling. There is a vine.com list dedicated to whaling, which offers the helpful definition “to dive backwards with one’s body in a public or unusual place, like a whale breaching the surface of the ocean.”

Fads like planking and Tebowing were built for an age of photographs. They were amusing, still poses, captured in the moment. Whaling builds on the idea of doing something weird in unlikely places, but brings in the element of motion (and sometimes sound). It’s designed to shine in Vine’s short-video format.

Now that whaling has exploded as a meme, the challenge is for whalers to up the ante on the antics. Synchronized whaling? We got it. Whaling in the produce section of the grocery store? Been done. Whaling in a bathroom stall? Check.

    iOS 8 Screenshots Spotted (Rumor)

iOS 8 Screenshots Spotted (Rumor)What you see above is an alleged screenshot that touts to represent iOS 8, having appeared over on a Weibo account (which is somewhat akin to Twitter in China). Although the main source of the alleged screenshot remains unverified and unknown, it does seem legitimate. Basically, from what has been depicted online so far, it does seem as though iOS 8 is not going to venture too far away from the existing iOS version on your Apple device.

Microsoft Launches Office 365 Personal Subscriptions

Back in 2012 Microsoft launched a subscription version of Office 365 under the Office 365 Home Premium moniker. For $8.33 per user per month or $99.99 per year, subscribers would get access to the typical apps in the Office suite, with the added advantage of using the software on up to five PCs and Macs. Since then the service has grown significantly, boasting more than 3.5 million subscribers. Microsoft is now turning towards consumer customers. Today it launched Office 365 Personal, a relatively affordable subscription version of its popular productivity suite.

LuMini Smart LED Bulb Shrinks Down to Size

LED bulbs are a great way to save some power and be more green since they consume much less electricity than standard bulbs. They can also do more than conventional bulbs. Tabu Design makes the cool Lumen Bluetooth LED bulb that we reviewed just a few days ago. One of the issues that might pop up for some with that bulb is that it’s a bit large for smaller lamps.

Tabu has launched its Kickstarter project for a smaller version of that bulb called the LuMini. This bulb is specifically designed to fit completely inside of smaller lamps. Part of how it works its magic is by using a ceramic cooling ring instead of metal fins.

Like the original, this bulb can be controlled via Bluetooth 4.0 using a smartphone app. It has RGB LEDs inside, and can make just about any color light you want. It’s also about half the price of the Lumen.

Unlike the Lumen, the LuMini doesn’t have a dedicated white LED inside. You can get white light from it, but it’s not as bright or pure as the original. The company has stretch goals that will produce other bulb sizes if certain milestones are met. A pledge of $30(USD) or more will get you a bulb in May 2014.
