OpenPool anyone?

OpenPool Billiards TableHere is a great addition for your man cave/game room; OpenPool. This new interactive device will make one of  the oldest non-tech games out there extremely high tech and you will have the most talked about game rooms in town. OpenPool takes an otherwise normal pool table and turns it into a hot bed of visual effects. An example of this is shown on their website is called the “Pond” effect, it makes the table look as thought you are playing on water rather than felt.

How this works is through two Kinects, a projector, pocket detectors , and collision detector. The Kinects follow the ball movement, the projector displays the visual effects on the table, the pocket detectors detect when a ball is made into each pocket and displays visual effects, and the collision detector uses a microphone to detect when balls collide to provide a certain visual effect for that as well.

Another really cool thing they have done is made this open source. They have made you the visual effects coordinator for your own game. So sit down, write some code and you have bragging rights to all your friends.

They have started a Kickstarter campaign where you can get one of the full systems for a $5000 donation. Or for a $1000 donation you can get what they are calling a DIY kit which is the software and projector mount.  If you have the bucks to spend on this system and are looking for an addition to you game room, this is the thing to have.

Origami-based Paper Microscope Costs Less than $1 to Make: Foldscope

High quality microscopes cost thousands of dollars and can be hard to operate and maintain. A group of researchers from Stanford University are close to changing that with a microscope that’s made mostly out of paper and costs less than a dollar to make.

The Foldscope was conceptualized by Jim Cybulski, James Clements and Asst. Prof. Manu Prakash. They were moved to develop the revolutionary microscope because they wanted to speed up the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases in developing countries. In his recent TED presentation, Asst. Prof. Prakash said that right now it can take months for patients in developing countries to get diagnosed and treated partly because microscopes are bulky, hard to maintain and expensive to acquire . So they set out to design a microscope that’s portable, easy to operate and can be mass produced at low costs. It looks like they succeeded.

In their paper, Jim, James and Asst. Prof. Prakash. said that the Foldscope can provide a magnification of up to 2,000X depending on the lens used. All of its components can be packed on a single sheet of card stock, which can also serve as an instruction manual.  Foldscope is also resistant to impact and water. It’s so small that you can carry multiple Foldscopes in your pocket. The only part of the microscope that needs electricity is an LED, which can last over 50 hours on a button cell battery. Best of all, it only costs between $0.58 to $0.97 to make. Below is Asst. Prof. Prakash’ TED presentation about the Foldscope:

How amazing is that? A copy of Jim, James and Asst. Prof. Prakash’s paper is available from the Cornell University Library archive. If you want to get your hands on one, head to the Foldscope team’s website and apply to become one of the their 10,000 beta testers.

Netscape’s Digg-Like Service Out Of Beta

Netscape's Digg-Like Service Out Of Beta

Netscape has now fully launched their Digg-like service in hopes of competing with Digg. This comes just days after Digg revamped their site to widen the categories and attract people that aren’t so technology focused. Is Netscape going to overpower Digg by opening their service up to millions of people? I don’t think so.

Some people don’t like the fact that Netscape has editors that choose the front page stories instead of giving the users full control. My biggest complaint right now is that they have several links on their main page that are dead. Even the Sign-In/Sign-up links don’t work and neither do the links below each article that are supposed to be tags. It isn’t a good idea to launch a service with broken links! I wonder how long it will take before they notice?

Carbon Wants To Kick That Smartwatch Off Your Wrist – And Replace It With A Charger Instead

Your wrist is a hotly contested new battleground, with a small fry like Pebble doing battle with giants including Samsung, and activity trackers like the Jawbone UP and Nike+ FuelBand fighting it out, too. A new Kickstarter project also wants to be a contender, with the Carbon wearable solar charger. The project debuted a couple of weeks ago, with a blank-faced wrist-mounted charger that had a… Read More

Neil Young’s PonoMusic to Launch on Kickstarter (Bow-Chica-Wow-Wow)

Neil Young has been talking up his forthcoming high-fidelity music service and music player for a few years. That service and the player will now be launching via Kickstarter and it is called PonoMusic. That is a horrible name, each time I see it I think PornoMusic and hum bow-chica-wow-wow to myself.

The device, made by Arye, is said to use zero feedback circuits and a digital filter to stop unnatural pre-ringing. I’m no audiophile, so this is Greek to me. I assume that means it sounds really good. The music player will have a substantial 128GB of storage and the triangular design looks really uncomfortable to carry in a pocket, so it’s probably best used in a backpack.

The 128GB of storage should be enough to store 100 to 500 high-resolution albums. Storage expansion is possible using memory cards. The high-resolution music service promises tracks from top labels and independent labels. The PonoPlayer (bow-chica-wow-wow) will sell for $399(USD), but the price will be discounted for pre-orders.

Young is launching the triangular player on Kickstarter on March 12.

Star Wars Sarlacc Toilet Decals: the Gross Is Strong with This One

A couple of years ago Robbie Rane and his friends were making up funny euphemisms for taking a dump. One of his buddies contributed “Toss Boba Fett in the Sarlacc.” The joke got stuck in Robbie’s head like pudding on porcelain, until one day he could bear it no more and decide to take the metaphor literally.

With the help of illustrator Alyssa Scott, Robbie made a set of stickers that will make a toilet bowl look like the Great Pit of Carkoon. Along with Boba Fett – the bounty hunter, not Robbie’s friend’s poop – the set also includes stickers of Han Solo and Chewbacca saving Lando Calrissian.
