U.S. Google Search Will Now Show Restaurant Menus In Results

Picking a place for dining can often become a titanic task, particularly if you have friends who are very picky about seeing the menu before actually going to the venue. Now its quite arduous to fish out a menu on the internet, that too when the restaurant’s website doesn’t have a mobile site. Thankfully, Google is on the job to make things easier for diners all around the country. It will now display restaurant menus in top results on Google Search.

This obviously takes care of a lot of things. Most patrons would first Google a new restaurant to find out its menu or timings as well as policies. Now from just one window they can get all of that information plus take a look at what they can expect from the chefs at the new joint. With menus being shown up in top results, seeking them online is now easier than ever before.

Obviously this doesn’t mean that every restaurant in the country has its menu up on the search engine, however as time passes we can expect this service to only get better as more data comes in. The results include tabs through which users can access different parts of the menu, such as appetizers, mains and desserts. Though in order to search for a menu, users will either have to type or say out the “show me the menu for” phrase in Google Search.

Steam Family Sharing Now Available For Everyone

Steam Family Sharing Now Available For Everyone

In September last year Value announced a new program allowing Steam users to share their digitally downloaded titles with their friends and family. This is one major caveat of digital copies as opposed to physical ones, sharing isn’t exactly easy, with the latter people previously just used to hand over the discs, with digital copies it isn’t that simple. The Steam Family Sharing program allowed gamers to share their entire library with as many as 10 authorized computers. Initially only 1,000 Steam accounts were given access to this feature, now Valve has opened it up for everyone.

    Tor Building Anonymous Instant Messenger

    Tor Building Anonymous Instant Messenger

Now there’s really no shortage of instant messaging services, apart from the ones built by third party developers, major vendors such as Apple, Google and BlackBerry have their own messaging services. However since last year when word of NSA’s clandestine spying operations broke, a lot of questions have been raised about the security provided by such services. It seems that the market could do with a service that was built around security, and Tor appears to be doing just that. Documents presented at the Tor 2014 Winter Developers Meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland reveal that the folks behind one of the world’s most popular anonymity service are now working on an anonymous instant messaging service.

AllSee Low-power Sensor Uses Ambient Radio Signals to Detect Gestures

Many gesture detection devices, including the Kinect and the Leap Motion, use infrared cameras to sense movement. They also have dedicated chips that process the data from the cameras. These components are power-hungry, especially if they’re turned on at all times. Researchers from the University of Washington have developed a gesture detection device that uses 1,000 to 10,000 times less power than its counterparts.

Bryce Kellogg, Vamsi Talla and their teacher Shyam Gollakota call the device AllSee. Instead of cameras and infrared light, it measures how the user’s hand affects ambient TV signals: “At a high level, we use the insight that motion at a location farther from the receiver results in smaller wireless signal changes than from a close-by location. This is because the reflections from a farther location experience higher attenuation and hence have lower energy at the receiver.”

The signal can also come from a dedicated RFID transmitter such as an RFID reader; future models may even use ambient Wi-Fi signals. The researchers even built prototypes that used TV signals both as source of data and as source of power, eliminating the need for a battery or plug.

Wave at your browser and go to the AllSee homepage for more on the device.

Nissan Rear-view Mirror Can Switch to Rear Camera View: Who’s the Nearest of Them All?

Nissan just made the rear-view mirror twice as useful. Its Smart mirror neatly hides an LCD monitor, which can display live video from a camera mounted at the rear of a vehicle at the flick of a switch.

The 4:1 monitor and 1.3mp camera should come in handy not just when your cargo or passengers are blocking your view, but also when your rear window gets dusty, wet or fogged up.

I think it’s a great idea, but as other folks have pointed out, it might be better if the switch is installed somewhere that’s closer to the driver. Nissan will offer the Smart rear-view mirror starting this Spring in Japan and in the rest of the world starting next year.
