36.9% Of Games Bought On Steam Never Get Played [Study]

36.9% Of Games Bought On Steam Never Get Played [Study]Whenever a Steam sale rolls around, we’re sure many gamers get excited at the idea that they can buy games that were too expensive before. Sure some of the deals might be great, but usually it results in gamers spending more than they’d like on titles that they might not have thought of in the first place.

Now let’s face it, despite the plethora of titles in our Steam library, how many of them do you actually play? According to a report by Ars Technica, they found that more than a third of the games that have been purchased have never been played, 36.9% to be exact. It is unclear as to why this might be; perhaps lack of time, perhaps no motivation, but it’s still a pretty interesting insight.

Their report also found that Valve’s DotA 2 is the most owned game on Steam with 25.93 million copies downloaded to date. In fact 13% of Steam’s most owned games are from Valve which is unsurprising given that Valve did create the Steam platform as a means to distribute their games in the first place.

This report seems to be part of a trend of reports that shows how gamers interact with their games. For example earlier we discovered that most gamers tend not to finish games they have have started, and that gamers tend to quit mobile games after one day.

We guess these studies can be used by developers to better understand their market and perhaps design games that are more engaging and provide incentives for gamers to finish them, but what do you guys think? Any of our readers guilty of purchasing games on Steam but never getting around to playing them? I know I am.

Apple’s App Store Revenue In China Grew By 70%

Apples App Store Revenue In China Grew By 70%We know that Apple was eager to get their phones into China, especially when it meant that they could sign a deal with China Mobile which was not only the country’s larger carrier, but also one of the largest carriers in the world, thanks to China’s population which gave it a huge amount of customers.

Now we know that this meant that Apple could essentially sell more iPhones to the Chinese public, but it also seems that this has managed to help increase the revenue from the iTunes App Store. According to reports from apps analytics firm, App Annie, it seems that App Store revenue for China has seen an increase of 70% in Q1 2014.

According to their report, they attribute this growth to the deal that Apple struck with China Mobile. The deal was only confirmed earlier this year after it seemed that Apple was still in talks with the carrier back in 2013, so it’s actually pretty amazing to see the App Store revenue grow by that much in a relatively short amount of time.

Unfortunately while this growth looks good on paper, financially it’s still not as good as Japan. In Japan it seems that despite the country having a smaller population than China, Japanese customers are spending more on its apps compared to those in China. Perhaps as the iPhone begins to reach a wider audience and matures a bit more in the market, those numbers will change, but for now Apple will just have to make do with the 70% growth.

Early Nokia Prototype Tablet From 2001 Gets Pictured

Early Nokia Prototype Tablet From 2001 Gets PicturedIt is no secret that Apple didn’t invent the tablet, although it’s safe to say that Apple probably revolutionized the way we use tablets and made the device an extremely popular one. Now Nokia has a tablet of their own dubbed the Lumia 2520 but it’s hardly the Finnish company’s first and only tablet effort.

According to an interview that Finland’s ISTV conducted with Esko Yliruusi, a Nokia tablet prototype from back the day was revealed (pictured above). For those wondering who Yliruusi is, he’s a data communications specialist that worked at Nokia from 1996 until 2001 and who helped to develop the tablet you can see in the photo above.

Safe to say Nokia’s take on the tablet back in the day is very different from tablets we see today. For starters it appears to sport a variety of buttons in a layout that we can’t help but be reminded of the Nokia N-Gage device. The tablet also packs a kickstand much like the Microsoft Surface tablet and is a lot thicker compared to the devices we are used to today.

It has also been revealed that the display on the tablet only displayed monochrome colors, which is very different from today where users are spoilt for choice when it comes to display options from their tablets. We have no idea what would have been the results and response Nokia would have received had the device been released, but what do you guys think? Could such a device have revolutionized the industry, or were tablets still a little ahead of their time back in 2001?

Alleged iPhone Case “Confirms” Repositioned Buttons

Alleged iPhone Case Confirms Repositioned ButtonsOne of the ways case manufacturers can get a jump on the competition is if they’re willing to begin producing cases for phones that haven’t been released yet. This means that the dimensions aren’t official but they are still willing to take the risk if it means that they will be the first on the market to offer up cases and accessories for a brand new device.

Now thanks to a recent photo by Nowhereelse.fr, a photo of an alleged iPhone 6 case has surfaced and based on the photos, it looks like the rumors could be right when they suggested that the iPhone 6 could see its power/sleep button repositioned. As we can see in the image above, everywhere else appears to be the same.

The volume rocker and mute switch is still placed on the left of the phone, the camera cutout is still in the same time, but interestingly enough to the right of the phone there appears to be a button which we can only presume is meant for the power/sleep button as the top right hand corner is missing any cutouts or buttons.

This photo also seems to be in line with an earlier leaked photo of yet another iPhone case which showed the repositioned button. Of course it is entirely possible that whoever made these cases are basing their designs on the rumors and alleged specifications of the phone, especially since we doubt Apple would be sharing their plans with accessory makers this early in.

We’re not sure why Apple would be moving the power/sleep button but perhaps they have rearranged the internals to accommodate the larger design, who knows, but in any case it seems that the rumors are here to stay for now, so hopefully additional information will surface later that will confirm what we’ve been seeing.
