Nokia Lumia 1020 Used To Document Underwater Diving Mission

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is quite the smartphone. Not only does it pack some pretty decent hardware under the hood, but it comes with a whopping 41MP PureView camera attached with it. While Nokia’s hardware specs might not necessarily match up with Android at the moment (there are rumors suggesting that Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 will add 2K display and Snapdragon 805 support), Nokia has made up for it with its camera technology.

Now if you’re wondering just how good and reliable Nokia’s camera technology is, it seems that it’s good enough where Nokia has teamed up with Fabien Cousteau on an underwater dive known as Mission 31, which will basically see Cousteau and his team spend 31 days underwater, a day longer than Cousteau’s grandfather did back in 1963.

Cousteau and his team will also document their entire dive using the Nokia Lumia 1020, but given that the phone isn’t water-resistant or waterproof, we can only assume it will be housed in a waterproof casing to be used during the mission. We’ve seen some pretty good photos taken with the Lumia 1020 and how it has been used to shoot fashion photography, so it will be interesting to see how it holds up in a documentary-like setting.

In the meantime Nokia is inviting users to share photos and videos of their own outdoors adventure and tag the photos with #NokiaMission31. The winner will be flown to a luxury hotel in Florida where they will be trained as an open water diver and with those skills, they will also get to participate in the dive with Cousteau himself. For more information, do check out the video above.

High-End Samsung Tizen Device To Arrive By End Of Q2 2014

High End Samsung Tizen Device To Arrive By End Of Q2 2014We know that Samsung has been working on Tizen-based smartphones, although to date we have yet to see the South Korean tech giant launch anything. Well the good news is that if you were curious as to what Samsung’s Tizen products might bring to the table, it seems that we won’t have to wait too long.

According to a report by Reuters, they quote Yoon Han-kil, the senior vice president of Samsung’s product strategy team who revealed that Samsung’s first Tizen smartphone will launch around the end of Q2 2014. However for those worried that this could mean Samsung might try to distance itself from Android, fret not because according to Yoon, Android will remain as Samsung’s main business (as far as mobile devices are concerned).

Even better news is that Samsung’s first Tizen handset will be a high-end offering. We’re not sure what kind of specs we might be able to expect – might it be that it could share the same hardware as the Galaxy S5 but with Tizen on board? – but it will definitely be a phone worth looking forward to.

It’s an interesting move by Samsung since with the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, and the Gear Fit, that they chose to use a different operating system, versus the original Galaxy Gear which still relied on the Android platform. We have heard the rumors on how Samsung wants to lessen their dependence on Google’s Android operating system and perhaps Tizen could be the way to go, assuming that it will be well-received.

LaCie Confirms Customer Data Breach On Their Website

LaCie Confirms Customer Data Breach On Their WebsiteSo we know that LaCie is known for creating storage solutions like external hard drives and Thunderbolt external hard drives used for Mac computers, but it seems that recently the company has experienced a security breach by unknown assailants. This attack is not on their products but rather their website in which they conduct business on.

According to a statement released by LaCie, it seems that everyone who has bought a LaCie product from the company’s website in the past year is at risk as the malware that infected their systems managed to gain access to sensitive customer information. LaCie states that they were informed of this breach on their website by the FBI on the 19th of March 2014.

“On March 19, 2014, the FBI informed LaCie that it found indications that an unauthorized person used malware to gain access to information from customer transactions that were made through LaCie’s website. We have hired a leading forensic investigation firm, who is conducting a thorough investigation, and assisting us in implementing additional security measures.”

The data at risk includes customer names, addresses, email addresses, payment card information, expiration dates, usernames, and passwords. In a statement by LaCie, “As a precaution, we have temporarily disabled the e-commerce portion of the LaCie website while we transition to a provider that specializes in secure payment processing services. We will resume accepting online orders once we have completed the transition.”

If you have bought any of LaCie’s products in the past year or so, the company is advising customers to reset their passwords. As it stands there have not been any reports of misuse of the stolen credit card numbers and customer information, but for those who are a little paranoid, perhaps changing credit cards and resetting your password might be the way to go.
