Roku baked its comprehensive search feature into its mobile apps last month, but only folks who used it with the firm’s HDMI Streaming Stick have been able to enjoy life without wielding a remote to hunt and peck for letters. Starting today, however,…
Investors have recently been concerned about Samsung’s financial forecasts owing to a number of reasons. It is believed that due to saturation in the high-end smartphone market Samsung may not be able to ship as many units as it did in the past, others simply have mixed opinions about its latest flagship. Though with the company recently announcing that it shipped 1.3 times as many Galaxy S5 units on launch day as opposed to its predecessor, investors are now optimistic about Samsung’s profit margins. A report cites Samsung insiders, who claim that the company aims to ship as many as 35 million Galaxy S5 units within this quarter.
35 million target is believed to be the bottom line, Samsung might believe that it could ship more than that within the quarter. It is possible, global launch day demand was already quite high and since then the demand has doubled in several European markets. Meeting the bottom line is expected to rake in about 17 trillion won in profit for Samsung.
Obviously one must understand that shipments don’t equate to sales. The outlook may be positive on paper, but even if Samsung ships 35 million Galaxy S5 units that doesn’t mean it sells the exact same number of units. Last year the company took the entire first quarter to sell 20 million units of Galaxy S4, selling 35 million units certainly won’t be an easy task. Though since Galaxy S5 is one of the most hotly anticipated smartphones of this year, at least Samsung can expect it to perform quite well in the market.

Nobody said that quitting the smoking habit is going to be easy, and while some folks out there have done so the cold turkey way, others might have to gradually taper off in the form of smoking less sticks in due time, or to rely on a nicotine patch, or look towards electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes in short, as an alternative. It seems that e-cigarettes have a new potential health hazard to worry about – the risk of explosion. Apparently, an e-cigarette exploded and razed a house in Barking, resulting in the London Fire Brigade to issue a warning concerning e-cigarettes.
The London Fire Brigade mentioned that such devices could actually burst into flames when one uses wrong charger, as evident by the victim of the fire who has since been hospitalized did. The fire took a quartet of fire engines and over 20 firefighters to deal with so that others around the flat remained safe and sound. The lady herself was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation and shock, prior to being sent to the hospital.
E-cigarettes might not be able to set things alight by itself, but using the wrong charger does carry with it its fair share of risks. A spokesman from the Brigade Fire Investigation Team shared, “The danger is that people sometimes use incorrect chargers which runs the risk of over-charging, which can potentially have explosive results. We are calling on e-cig retailers to ensure they are selling the correct chargers for the cigarettes. As with all rechargeable electrical equipment, it’s vitally important that people use the correct type of charger for their e-cigs to prevent fires which can be serious and could even result in death.”

Vivo has an upcoming smartphone for the masses which has yet to be officially announced, although the world already knows it to arrive in the form of the Vivo Xshot. This particular smartphone does seem to shape up to be a photographer’s dream, where teaser images that have been published by Vivo themselves do point to a 24MP rear camera that hails from the folks over at Sony, sporting Exmor RS technology.
This new Android-powered smartphone’s camera will boast of optical image stabilization (OIS), dual LED flash that we talked about before, and a very large f/1.8 aperture. Those figures would amount to nothing if there is no comparison to figure out where the Vivo Xshot would stand in the scheme of things – the Nokia Lumia 1020’s camera itself has an f/2.2 aperture, with the Sony Xperia Z2’s camera carrying an f/2.0 aperture. It does seem that the camera of the Vivo Xshot is also capable of capturing 3D video, not to mention 4K video as well, with a dedicated shutter button making this smartphone seem more like a digital camera with smartphone functions than anything else.
Other hardware specifications of the Vivo Xshot were rumored to include a 7.68MP front-facing camera, a 1080p display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM, and 32GB of internal memory.

There is nothing quite like having a themed piece of hardware, is there? Nintendo is said to roll out a brand new Wii Remote Plus controller some time later this month, where this particular model will come dressed in the iconic colors of Princess Peach. The Wii Remote Plus Princess Peach controller is set to hit stores at the end of this month, sporting an asking price of $39.99 apiece, where it has been specially designed in the same manner as that of the Mario and Luigi controllers.
The main body of this controller will feature a shade of pink, complete with a golden crown design emblazoned across the remote’s speaker. The middle buttons on the controller happen to be blue in color, while the plus pad arrives in a shade of golden yellow, which so happens to be colors that reflect Princess Peach’s very own jewelry and crown. Expect this uniquely colored remote to play nice with the entire library of Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Wii U games, where among them include the soon-to-arrive kart racer Mario Kart 8 that is set to launch later this May 30th. Are you interested in collecting all of the specially colored Wii Remote Plus controllers, or is the plain old version good enough for you?

I have to admit, Clippy makes me feel nostalgic. It takes me back to the days when I get my very first computer. Clippy would always show up if I needed help in Office programs back in the day and would present a laundry list of solutions. As Microsoft moved into the future, Clippy was removed from Office programs, even if it etched a permanent place in our memories. At times though the company has brought it back. As part of its April Fools’ Day prank this year Microsoft put Clippy in Office Online. Now it has brought it back as an Easter egg in Cortana virtual private assistant on Windows Phone 8.1.
At the BUILD 2014 conference Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8.1. The much awaited software brings Microsoft’s own Siri competitor called Cortana. Yesterday Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview was released, even non-developers can load it on their Windows 8 devices. A lot of people have since been toying around with the software and most have discovered that Clippy exists as an Easter egg in Cortana.
A member of the WPC forums asked Cortana if she liked Clippy. The virtual assistant had a few responses to that query, including “What’s not to like? That guy took a heck of a beating and he’s still smiling.” The circular Cortana avatar then morphs into Clippy. If you’ve loaded up Windows Phone 8.1 developer preview on your device, why not give this a go and take a walk down memory lane?

Laptops get thinner and lighter every year, but their power adapters are mostly still big and heavy. FINsix claims its Dart laptop charger is up to four times smaller and up to six times lighter compared to ordinary chargers.
Dart uses what FINsix calls Very High Frequency technology to provide up to 65W of power. You can read more about it on FINsix’ technical report (pdf), though the word “technical” isn’t there for nothing. Note that 65W won’t be enough for all laptops – for example, Retina MacBook Pros use an 85W power adapter – but that will do for hundreds of other models. You can check this compatibility list (pdf) to see if your laptop will work with Dart. Dart also has a 2.1A USB charging port, so it can also replace your mobile device power adapter.
Plug a tiny browser to Kickstarter to support Dart. Pledge at least $89 (USD) to get a Dart that works with hundreds of Windows laptops. The MacBook-compatible Dart is at a higher reward tier – $148. FINsix says that they have to buy Apple’s power adapters to get parts for the Macbook-compatible Dart, hence the significant added cost for that model.

For the past year, the online handmade marketplace Etsy has been developing a way to help its sellers get their products into retail stores. And not just indie boutiques; Etsy’s now helping them put their wares in sizable shops like Nordstrom and West Elm.
